Hamburg friends! “A Time of Living in Between” will be shown at ASA Open Studios, hosted by @hfbkhamburg Details below, private view 19.06. 🌱 A collaboration between Rafael Kuhn and Leonard Maassen, A Time of Living in Between explores how memories of conflict are distributed in architectural, environmental, and social landscapes in Cyprus. Since the Turkish invasion in 1974, the island has been divided into two political administrations. Following millenia of empire-building, post-colonial independence from the British Empire in 1948 and the at the confluence of two world religions, inhabiting everyday worlds in this space is an active negotiation in the midst of latent struggles that transverse the horizon of immediate locality. Agency is relocated in emergent opportunities for (re)construction and the articulation of hybridities of memory and identity. The process of constant rebuilding because, or in spite, of geopolitical agendas is intertwined with the traces and scars of brutal conflict manifest in architectural structures and landscapes. Situated at the confluence of four outward-looking views, the viewer is invited to reflect on the biases and limitations of their own gaze. Discongruent cameras angles perpetuate a sense of tension at the centre of the space, sitting uneasily between panoramic naturalism and explicit performativity. The artists, in their positionality as outsider-visitors, actively fail in their attempts to make sense of this charged space through a rigid application of perspective, instead emerging with a kaleidoscopic documentation of the unassuming atmospheres of everyday life. “Requiem for a Glacier Hollow” was written by Leonard Maassen @leoleoleomaa for World Day for Glaciers 2025, an international event introduced as part of the @unitednations Nations International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation. The poem is accompanied by M E L T, a soundscape featuring sounds collected in ice caves beneath the Morteratsch Glacier during the 2023 summer ice melt. In a time when facts and data often struggle to cut through the noise, art offers an alternative way to convey the urgency of the climate crisis. One that makes people feel. Sprachkörper is a performance by artist and electronic musician Leonard Maassen. Situated in a field of poetic diary entries in German and English, the piece treats this personal archive as an emotionally charged, unstable material, navigated live through voice and modular synthesis. Developed for 10-channel audio spatialization during a residency at Lake, it treats the performance space itself as an instrument and the 3D movement of sound as an active compositional parameter. Leonard Maassen (b. 1998, Paris) is a German artist working across music, spatial audio, writing, and film. His work investigates how place, memory and environmental change register in sensory experience through site-specific interventions and spatial sound composition.
 Recent projects include Re-Synthesis of a Ritual Space, a sound installation commissioned by The Marchus Trust for Durham Cathedral in collaboration with Idrîsî Ensemble, and compositions for Tomas van Houtryve’s installation Terrifying Sublime: Synthetic Alpine Landscapes. His work has also been presented at Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan, and as part of the Alfred Töpfer Stiftung’s Art School Alliance programme in Hamburg.
 Maassen holds a Master of Composition in Electronic and Produced Music from Guildhall School of Music & Drama and a BA in Geography from the University of Oxford. He is a former Junior Fellow at Guildhall and an Amoenus Spatial Audio resident at IKLECTIK, London.

WHAT IS Lake Live? Lake Live is Lake’s performance strand. Artists get three days in the space to develop and test a live work, ending in a public performance on the Saturday evening. Sound, projection, movement, or any combination. All artists are paid and technically supported throughout.
