Most business networks take a fee and give members a room... then over to them to take their chances. We want The Business End to be far more than that, provide real value for sponsors/members/attendees and be able to demonstrate it in real hard numbers.

Over the last few days we have switched on two things on our intelligence platform. The first is a live membership card. Every member has one on their phone. It reads their risk record each time it opens, works as the door pass at our lunches, and on the reverse shows the next lunch, their leadership profile, our latest intelligence report and their credit we give to members for attending our events.

The second is "The TBE Exchange". Every lunch ticket a member buys pays 5% back as credit. Introduce someone who joins TBE and you receive 15% of their first-year fee, then 5% of each renewal for as long as you both remain members. The credit goes towards the next lunch in one tap and comes straight off at checkout. There is nothing to claim.

The Exchange also lists our corporate partners and the rates they offer members, because the most useful thing a network can do is send business to the people inside it. A club should reward the people who build it. This is our first step in doing that properly. by @liam_mooney01

Great news ahead of our next London Leadership Lunch on Friday 13 November. Judicare Law will be our event partner, and their CEO, Neil Heaney, will join Neil Back MBE on the panel.

Neil Back won the 2003 Rugby World Cup with England, captained his country, toured three times with the British & Irish Lions and made 339 appearances for Leicester Tigers, winning two Heineken Cups and five league titles. He played in a side that set its standards higher than anyone else’s and kept them when the pressure was greatest.

Neil Heaney brings a different view of the same question. He spent more than a decade as a professional footballer with Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton before founding Judicare in 2009. The firm now advises clients on legal matters across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and many current and former elite sportspeople go to him first when they need help abroad.

We will ask both of them a practical question: how do elite performers hold their standards when the pressure is real, and what does that mean for the people running businesses?

Our thanks to Neil and the team at Judicare for their support.

The lunch is at Hawksmoor Wood Wharf in Canary Wharf, from 12.00 to 15.00, hosted by Liam Mooney Justin M. Fitzpatrick. It is limited to 60 seats and places are by invitation.

If you would like to join us, or know someone who should be in the room, message email liam@business-end.com or jmf@business-end.com taken in Canary Wharf, London by @liam_mooney01

73% of the senior business people in our Monaco room said their biggest risk comes from outside: AI, the pace of change, pressure they cannot control. In elite sport, 86% of what actually broke under pressure came from inside the team. That gap is where businesses get hurt.

On Wednesday we took it into the room at Castelroc for The Business End’s Monaco Leadership Lunch, powered by @vanlanschotkempen, with Jamie Cudmore, former captain of Canada, and Alain van der Heijden of Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management.

What was said stays in the room. The question we left everyone with is this: when the pressure is at its highest, who in your organisation is genuinely allowed to say stop?

Change hits every competitor at once. Your systems decide who comes through.

Glencairn, Dublin, Wednesday 30 September 2026.

Achilles, powered by The Business End, brought together procurement, sustainability and risk leaders to discuss social value as the new competitive differentiator in Irish procurement.

Thank you to our panel, Declan Kidney, Katie Ferrier, Jeanne Copeland and Suzanne Hickey, to the Briitsh Ambassador the team at Glencairn, for a remarkable venue, and to everyone who joined us, old faces and new. It was a strong room, and the third half was arguably the best of the evening :)

Great to hear from Canadian rugby legend, Jamie Cudmore today in Monaco who was on fine form. A fantastic afternoon, a full house, great venue and a strong room. We explored two different sectors, Sport and Finance, with Alain van der Heijden from Van Lanschot Kempen private banking Both speakers reached the same conlusions about leadership and elite performance.

This was our third leadership lunch in Monaco this year. Every time the quality of the room and the audience has grown significantly. More analysis and photos to follow. by @liam_mooney01

Elite sport is unforgiving about pressure. A missed standard shows up on the scoreboard within minutes, in front of everyone. Business is slower to deliver the verdict, which is exactly why standards drift. A shortcut in a supply chain, a check skipped because the deadline was tight, a supplier nobody looked at closely enough. None of it costs anything until the day it costs a great deal.

That gap between how sport handles pressure and how business handles it is what we will be talking about in Sydney on Wednesday 21 October, in partnership with Achilles Information Limited

Benn Robinson joins us. Seventy-two Tests for the Wallabies, the most-capped Waratah in history, RUPA President while still playing, and the past decade in sports underwriting, where his job has been to price what happens when things go wrong. Katie Ferrier of Achilles will be in conversation with him, with Justin M. Fitzpatrick and Liam Mooney in the chair.

We ran the same format with Achilles last week in Dublin and in Belfast in March. Over 80% of the rooms were senior leaders, every one through a personal introduction. Sydney will be the same kind of room. W Sydney, 5.30pm. Registration can be found in the comments section below. taken in Sydney by @liam_mooney01

Sydney. Wednesday 21 October. Our first room in Australia.

The Business End has spent the last year putting senior leaders in a room with people who have performed at the top of elite sport and asking one question: what actually holds when the pressure is on. London, Guernsey, Belfast, Dublin, Chichester, Brighton, Exeter, Monaco, Ottawa. Belfast with Achilles Information Limited in March drew 59 senior leaders on invitation alone. Sydney is next, and Achilles is hosting it at W Sydney as the first Achilles Live event in Australia powered by The Business End.

Sport is the one business language that travels. A boardroom in Sydney, Dublin or Monaco will disagree on a lot of things, but everyone in it understands what a team looks like when it is holding under pressure and what it looks like when it is not. Every organisation has the standard it writes down and the standard it actually runs on, and the gap between the two is invisible until something breaks. A supplier fails, an incident happens, a market moves. Elite sport is the one environment where that gap gets exposed every week in front of everyone, which is why the people who have lived it are worth listening to.

Benn Robinson has lived it. 72 Tests for the Wallabies, 155 Super Rugby caps, the most capped Waratah in history, former RUPA President, and now working in specialist risk underwriting, so he has seen pressure from the pitch and from the balance sheet. He will be in conversation with Achilles Regional Director Katie Ferrier, with Justin M. Fitzpatrick and Liam Mooney in the chair.

If you lead a business in Australia and want an honest conversation about preparation, trust and accountability, this is the room. Drinks and conversation from 5.30pm. Places are limited and attendance is by invitation. Registration details are in the comments section below. by @liam_mooney01

On Wednesday 7 October we are back in Monaco for The Business End's Leadership Lunch, at Castelroc on the Place du Palais.

Our speaker is Jamie Cudmore. He captained Canada, played in four Rugby World Cups, and spent eleven years at ASM Clermont Auvergne, where he lost three Top 14 finals in a row before winning the title in 2010. He now coaches at Nissa Rugby in Nice. Jamie will be in conversation with Alain van der Heijden, Head of Wholesale and Investment Strategies at Van Lanschot Kempen, who are powering up the event.

The question we will be putting to both of them is one that applies as much to running a business or a portfolio as to a rugby team: what do you do when you have made the right decision and still lost, and how do you know whether to change the plan or hold your nerve? Ivor ALEX and I will be in the chair.

It is room of around fifty senior business executives, senior professionals and professional investors from Monaco and the Riviera, with lunch and a proper conversation rather than a presentation.

Places are €125, or €85 for Business End members. The booking link is in the comments, or message Liam Mooney or Ivor ALEX directly.

A huge thank you to Van Lanschot Kempen and Isabelle Foy for supporting this lunch and to Castleroc for hosting us. by @liam_mooney01

“You cannot treat everyone equally. That is bullsh*t.” — Nick Easter

A provocative statement. But one that challenges a fundamental assumption about leadership.

Should great leaders treat everyone the same?

Or should they understand what each individual needs to perform at their best?

In this clip from The Business End, former England international Nick Easter draws on Sir Alex Ferguson’s management of Eric Cantona to explore the difference between consistency and equality.

The distinction matters.

Standards should be consistent. Leadership should be personal.
Different personalities. Different motivations. Different circumstances.

The challenge is knowing when to adapt your approach without compromising the standards that hold a team together.

Whether you're managing a dressing room, a boardroom or a growing business, treating everyone identically isn't necessarily treating everyone fairly.

🎥 Watch Nick's perspective.

A question for every leader:

Where does individual management end and favouritism begin?

We'd be interested to hear your thoughts. 👇

Yesterday at The Stand Off in Exeter, Tony Rowe CBE and Gareth Steenson gave us three hours that were worth a good deal more than that.
Two men who built something. Tony took a second tier club and turned it into Premiership and European champions, and built South West Communications alongside it. Gareth was released by Ulster at 22, went to Rotherham and the Cornish Pirates, and finished his career kicking the points that won a Premiership final. Neither story was handed to them.
Thank you to Tony and Gareth for their honesty, to The Stand Off for looking after us properly, and to everyone who gave up a Friday to be in the room.
Thanks also to our partners, Salcombe Brewery, Exeter Chiefs Foundation, The Stand Off and Cormack Advertising
More to follow. The write-up goes out to the room on Monday. taken in The Stand Off by @liam_mooney01
