The murder of George Floyd breaks my heart. To think of the fear this man felt as his breath was slowly, agonizingly stripped from him is unbearable and uncomfortable to do. After losing my Dad this past summer, I feel these most recent murders of black Americans on a deeper level. Not because I think, "what if that was my Dad, Mom or sibling?" The loss of these human beings should be felt regardless of our hypothetical connection to them. Rather, the loss of my Dad opened up an entirely new level of heartbreak, sadness and grief within me. I feel deeper now, and like so many have said, it is exhausting to feel this deeply over and over and over again. And if it's hard for me, a white woman with all the privilege in the world, I can't even begin to truly understand how hard this is for my black friends and neighbors. Because while my grieving process has not been easy, it has been free of one important factor which shines a light on my privilege as a white American: I do not fear that what happened to my Dad will happen to me, my brother, sister or Mom. My grief is not compounded with fear on a daily basis, the weight of which is unimaginable.

Sadly, the story of George Floyd or Breonna Taylor or Ahmaud Arbery is not unique and it likely will not be the last heartbreaking story of police brutality against African Americans that we hear or see.
.
So with that said, I'm asking that everyone who has the means donate to one of the many amazing organizations within Minneapolis - @visitlakestreet @mnfreedomfund to name a couple - that are helping to rebuild the communities that were devasted by systemic racism long before the brick and mortar business were burned to the ground.
