New beginnings….

I know how lucky I am to have this old workshop as my studio. Next to Mum & Dad’s in the village I grew up in, I have vivid memories of Aubrey and Kenny the carpenters hard at work with sawdust filling the air (I’m sure the legacy of their tenure still falls from the floorboards with every heavy footed visitor!). During my teenage years I had the pleasure of visiting Barry a furniture restorer and later Adrian, a graphic designer who's been pivotal in my career choices.

I moved my press into the ground floor space when we arrived back in Cornwall in January and now, I’m delighted to be occupying the whole workshop. An absolute dream come true, I finally have space to create and dance like nobody's watching.

It’s a simple building of wood and granite with gorgeous light upstairs and is now my sanctuary. Even though I’m here to work, carve, print and package my orders, I feel incredibly peaceful within its walls. Day to day life recedes and even the pinging of the mobile seems to fade away. It truly is an analogue space, simple and un fancy, with more than a hint of a fisherman’s hut about it which seems apt for this coastal inspired Cornish artist.

I do hope you enjoy this little film, an autumn afternoon in the Lino Lord world, just me and Finn, good coffee and lots of ink.

From screen and stage, the famous fishing village of Port Isaac on the north Cornish coast.

This may sound odd for a Cornishman but I don’t really like being on or in the water. I’ve always been drawn to the sea from the harbour walls, my connection to coast via a promontory that is neither land nor ocean. There’s a particular excitement when you’re so close to the crashing waves that you can smell the salt, and I’m deeply inspired by and in awe of those who brave the deep blue depths every day to bring in the catch. As Cornishmen have done for time immemorial.

Places like Port Isaac are full of tourists in the summer, drawn by its beauty (as well as the famous TV series Doc Martin that was filmed here and of course the wonderful Fisherman's Friends) but the village itself has not changed much for centuries. It’s from the sky that you can really see how the old fisherman’s houses have been woven together over time, connected by a maze of quirky corners and narrow alleys all leading down to the harbour.

This is a print I’m rather proud of - not just because of how it turned out (you never quite know as you pull the wheel of the press!) but because it celebrates a working fishing village that epitomises everything I love about Cornwall. Heritage and tradition and a yearning to always be carving and printing by the sea for the rest of my life.

The Homecoming...

A lifetime away and now I’m home.

I am delighted to share with you a brief glimpse of our small part of Cornwall.

Cornish born and bred, I found it difficult to leave my beloved Cornwall to begin my photography career in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. After 24 very happy years in Buckinghamshire and South Oxfordshire, a wonderful photography career and a wife (!) later we finally return home to Cornwall as a printmaker and a photographer.

I will share more about my workshop and studio in future posts but for now please enjoy a glimpse into our new lives, what inspires me and why we had to finally come back home...

One of my favourite parts of printmaking.

Seeing my block all inked up before it's first pressing. It gives me a huge amount of satisfaction to see a finished block ready for the press.

Steeped in history, a place of work and a place to relax and unwind. Lovely Portscatho on the south of Cornwall.

Many have been coming to Portscatho for several years and now come down with their children or even grandchildren.

A timeless little place that many of us love so much.

We are delighted to return to the Fisherman's Shelter this week for our last time this year. Monday to Friday 11-5

I wasn’t always a printmaker, in fact, for 25 years I earned my living as a photographer.

I loved taking pictures (still do) but as technology moved rapidly on, I found myself spending much more time looking at a screen than I wanted and began to yearn for a more analogue life.

I had photographed a number of artisans over the years and started to look for an hand craft of my own. Something simple, with basic tools, that wasn’t expensive to learn and would keep my hands busy sat by the fire of an evening.

Nearly 8 years ago, I picked up my first Lino block and I haven’t looked back. I am forever grateful that my lino prints have found an audience, that I can carve scenes that bring me joy and that this craft has brought me a full circle back home to Cornwall.

My prints are all handmade, from start to finish, designed, carved and printed by me in my Cornish studio. I feel incredibly honoured that my customers choose them to display in their homes across the world.

As Autumn sets in here in Cornwall it's time to focus on new carvings....

I have my first 2 day workshop this coming weekend 3rd and 4th October. Due to unforeseen circumstances a couple of places have become available.

I am offering the 2 day workshop where you will learn all the basics and work on a 12"x8" block. This is bookable on my website.

OR if you wish to attend Saturday or Sunday you are welcome to join use at £135 pp to include instruction. If you have been to my Cornish studio before and fancy a day carving and printing I can offer this at £100 pp per day.

It was this print that made us make the move back home...

I sold 99 of the edition of 100 keeping one for ourselves and it was then I asked myself ' I wonder if we could move back to Cornwall and I can make a living as a printmaker?

End of the Day, Portscatho we call it. In my Lugger Blue colour it sold out apart from the one on our bedroom wall I wake up to every morning.

Now available in Powder Blue a beautiful ink from @cranfieldcolours .

Who'd have thought?...

...I certainly didn't.....

7 and a half years ago I started linocut, I carved my business name after setting an Instagram account.

Fast forward and here we are in beautiful Cornwall welcoming guests from all over the world! After the first few international guests I put a world map on the wall for every overseas visitor, dropping in to look at my work, attending a workshop or just to say hi.

This last 8 days we have welcomed guests from Mexico, New Zealand, USA, Spain, Switzerland, Australia, Isles of Wight 😉 as well as the UK mainland and Cornwall itself!

I feel very humble and grateful that people make the effort to visit me.

A full house of overseas visitors today (5 international) and a couple from IOW 💙
