Find Your Local Catch with Oregon Uni!

Newport, Oregon’s Local Ocean Seafoods sets a high bar for locally sourced seafood, including a new 100% Fish initiative, aimed at unlocking the full value of every fish.

This month, the restaurant is highlighting a local uni on toast, from urchin diver and fisherman Aaron Huang’s OoNee Sea Urchin Ranch.

The OoNee divers harvest red and purple sea urchin. Known locally as purps (or perps), purple urchin are decimating vital kelp forests on the U.S. West Coast.

OoNee Sea Urchin Ranch removes purple urchin from overgrazed reefs, where they can lie dormant for years, waiting to feast on the kelp as it begins to regenerate.

OoNee brings the dormant purple sea urchins from overgrazed reefs to their onshore facility and feeds them for a few weeks to get them market-ready.

So whether you’re eating red or purple sea urchin, support for local harvesters
like OoNee helps to protect and preserve critical marine habitat.

In an industry as tough as seafood, Amber is an absolute force. Known up and down the Oregon coast for her incredible knowledge and unmatched fishmongering, she’s someone the entire Newport fishing community looks up to.

Over the last two years of working together and building a friendship, I’ve learned that her work ethic is only rivaled by her massive heart. Despite working hard daily at Local Ocean, she still checks on me every single day just to make sure I’m smiling, hydrated & fed.

She is a true coastal treasure, an angel of a human, and the exact example of who I look up to. So lucky to work with you and call you a friend, Amber! Seafood legend status forever ⚓️🩵 @localoceanseafoods

October is National Seafood Month, but around here, we celebrate seafood year-round. The Local Ocean Seafoods mission is simple: From the edge of the wild Pacific Ocean, we source direct from local Oregon fishers to connect you with extraordinary seafood experiences.

This month, we challenge you to celebrate seafood close to home! Try this:
🐟 Eat local seafood and ask where it was caught
💪 Support locally owned restaurants and seafood markets that prioritize local seafood
🧑‍🍳 Cook an Oregon seafood species at home (try blackcod, lingcod, rockfish, or Albacore tuna!)

At Local Ocean, we’re proud to serve seafood sourced from Oregon and the West Coast. We’re happy to tell you about sourcing, and we even list the name of the fishing boat each fish comes from in our seafood market.

Happy National Seafood Month! Follow @Boat2Fork to learn more about local seafood, find your local catch and get involved throughout National Seafood Month.

Autumn often brings some of our favorite days on the Oregon Coast: mild weather, fewer crowds, and plenty happening along Newport’s working waterfront. 🍂

One thing to note: we’ll be closed beginning with dinner service on Sunday, October 25 through Monday, November 2nd, reopening Tuesday, November 3rd. We’re making some updates in our kitchen that require us to close the restaurant during this time. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding! We hope you’ll come see us before the closure and again when we reopen to help support our hardworking team. 💪 🌊

Local Ocean Seafoods, in Newport Oregon, buys the majority of its fish from local commercial fishermen just across the street on the bayfront. Highly recommend their seafood market and restaurant if you want truely local seafood while in Oregon. So many restaurants on the Oregon coast serve imported seafood, which is WILD to me considering how incredible the local fish is in this town.

Is it more difficult and expensive for the restaurant to buy local vs. from Sysco? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. 👏 @localoceanseafoods

There’s something special about watching Newport work.

I was invited down to the docks to film the F/V Challenge coming home with rockfish and lingcod, and on a beautiful morning like this one, you could see an entire piece of our local economy happening right in front of you.

Captain Chris Wright and the crew of the F/V Challenge did the hardest part.. going to sea and bringing the catch home.

Paul and Northwest Reliable LLC took over at the dock, running the offload and getting that catch safely ashore.

Wright Tide Seafood was there as the local seafood dealer.. helping create the market that gives the work of our fishing fleet somewhere to go.

And Tony Bixler and the team at Local Ocean Seafoods complete one of my favorite parts of the story: taking seafood harvested by local fishermen and giving our community and its visitors a chance to experience what comes from the waters right outside our door.

Boat to dock. Dock to buyer. Buyer to table.

Different businesses. Different people. One small community supporting each other.

That’s what stayed with me.

Bre at SeaBre’s made sure we started the morning fed, and Rachelle - littlezesty made the introduction that brought me into this circle in the first place.

Thank you to every one of you for letting me point a camera at what you do.

Newport is known for the ocean.

But mornings like this remind me that the people who make their living from it are what make this place special.

This is Newport.

This is local.

And this is exactly why I started Forage to Table.

In September, Local Ocean's Laura Anderson and Darlene Khalafi traveled to Reykjavík as invited speakers and presenters at the Iceland Ocean Cluster’s 100% Fish for Profit Conference and a convening of sister ocean clusters from around the world.

The gathering brought together leaders working to build stronger, more innovative ocean economies, with a particular focus on creating more value from every fish harvested and strengthening the coastal communities that depend on seafood.

Laura and Darlene were there not only to learn, but to share what is happening here in Oregon. Their presentations highlighted the growing work of the Oregon Ocean Cluster, along with Local Ocean’s efforts to advance 100% Fish concepts and build stronger connections among fishermen, seafood businesses, researchers, entrepreneurs, and communities.

Being invited to present in Iceland was an opportunity to bring Oregon’s experience to an international stage and to show that our coast is part of a much larger global movement rethinking how ocean resources can create greater economic, environmental, and community value.

The trip also reinforced an important lesson: innovation rarely happens in isolation. It grows through relationships, shared learning, and networks that connect people and ideas across sectors and across borders.

Laura and Darlene returned to Oregon with new connections, new ideas, and renewed energy for the work ahead, both at Local Ocean and through the Oregon Ocean Cluster.
