🍃 Most people when they get together they sit down, have a cuppa and catch up. We get together, pot on this year’s native Irish tree saplings such as Holly and sow next year’s Oak saplings while we have a banter.

💚 Oh and did we tell you that we are hoping to grow 20,000 trees yearly ? We have 6,500 growing at the moment so we have a ways to go, but not for lack of trying....

🌳 Would you like to spend time with like minded and dare we say fun people? Would you like to grow native trees that will be planted back into Kerry? Check out our website - see link in bio - to sign up.

💚🌳 Our next Community Day is Saturday the 14th of November from 10-4pm in Cromane, County Kerry. All are welcome. by @localrootskerry

🍃 This time last year we processed berries from native Irish trees by hand. Which meant a bucket, a piece of wood, a lot of elbow grease and hours of work. Thanks to the funding we received under the Innovative Forest Technology Scheme from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine we were able to purchase our seed processing machine cutting the time to about 20 minutes. Even the clean up was easier.

🌳 By not spending hours cleaning and pounding the berries to separate the flesh from the seed we can now focus on other jobs around the nursery, such as repotting and sowing - stay tuned.

💚🌳 Would you like to get involved in growing native Irish trees while connecting with like minded people? Our next Community Day is Saturday the 14th of November from 10-4pm in Cromane, county Kerry - see link in bio on how to sign up. All welcome by @localrootskerry

🍃 As a group of volunteers who grow native Irish trees from seed we don’t stick to “normal” working hours. We all pitch in, doing whatever needs to be done, when we can.

🌳 Why not come along to our next Community Day, Saturday the 14th of November from 10-4pm in Cromane. See link in bio. by @localrootskerry

🍃 When we go out collecting seeds from native Irish trees to grow in our nursery, we often get distracted..... Especially by pretty mushrooms 🍄 , the fruiting bodies of mycelium, an extensive network underground of white threads connecting trees, plants and other organisms.

🌳 Want to get involved? Our next Community Day is on Saturday the 8th of November from 10am till 4pm - see link in bio by @localrootskerry

🍃 We don’t just grow native Irish trees, we also have 2 new ponds that needed a helping hand. And the students from the ecology course at @kerrycollege_ie are just the people to do it. Our ponds have gotten some deadwood and large rocks to create hideaways and perches for our visiting wildlife 🐸, while new plants will grow to shelter pondlife against predators and create much needed shade in the summers to come.

🍃 It literally takes a village to grow native Irish trees. This is the 3rd year in a row that the transition year students from the @iskillorglin come out every week during the school year to help us out on site.

🌳 This is a busy time of the year with seed collecting and processing, so they gave us a hand with the Rowan aka Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) which was collected from Cronin’s yard at the foot of Carrantuohill (with permission from the owners).

💚 Hopefully these will be the last berries to be processed by hand as our new tool has arrived. Stay tuned!

💚🌳 Would you like to get involved in growing future Irish native forests? Join us for our monthly Community Day, Saturday the 8th of November from 10-4pm, sign up see link in bio. Or would you and your company like to get involved? Send us an email hello@localroots.ie and we can talk more. by @localrootskerry

Forget complicated incentive programs, cash bonuses, or corporate perks. If you want a crew of volunteers to plant thousands of trees in the driving Kerry rain, all you need is warm vegetable soup, brown bread, and hot tea.

🍃 October is a busy time of the year for a native tree nursery as many of our native trees are producing their nuts and berries. We have been out collecting seeds from many tree species here in Kerry, but these stand out because they are so beautiful. Next time you are wandering through the woodlands or past hedgerows see if you can spot them. Arbutus (Strawberry tree), Spindle, Hawthorn and Blackthorn.

🌳 Our next Community Day is tomorrow, Saturday the 10th of October from 10-4pm. Go to our website to sign up, see link in bio.

🍃 It is that time of year again. Primary schools have been back for a couple of weeks and things have settled into a routine. Now is the time for us to get our boxes together for our Acorn Quest. This will be our 3rd year and the amount of applications were phenomenal.

🌳 Thanks to Astellas in Killorglin, we have been able to add another 1,000 acorn holders to this science project. And a big thank you to our willing workers 💚 who, like last year, bagged the acorns and boxed everything together to be posted out to the primary schools.

🍃 We have 47 schools signed up in Kerry, but we are hoping to go national. Does your company want to become a sponsor in your county? Please reach out to us by email hello@localroots.ie or go to our website - see link in bio. by @localrootskerry

🍃 Going collecting seeds for our native Irish tree nursery doesn’t mean that we are with our nose to the ground - at least not the whole time 😉.

It’s amazing how nature recovers from potentially devastating impact. This willow tree, for example, had a large limb that broke away from the trunk. Seeing the outer layers are still attached the limb didn’t die. Nurishment happens through the outer layers (a couple of millimetres below the bark) of the trunk and as long as those are intact it will continue to provide nutrients for growth, photosynthesis and other functions.

🍃 Would you like to get involved, get your hands dirty, learn more about growing trees and find your tribe? Our next Community Day will be on Saturday the 10th of October. Sign up through our website - see link in bio. by @localrootskerry

We want to make sure that growing native Irish trees doesn’t hurt anyone’s back as demonstrated by one of our volunteers - obviously under a lot of duress 😆.

Thanks to funding through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine we can now cut our wildflower meadow once the seed heads have dried and fallen, mulch what we need for our compost heaps and prepare the beds for next growing season.

You don't need to launch a charity, buy land, or fund a movement to transform your corner of the earth.

'If you're not ready to start a meitheal this year, the best thing you can do is join one.' The ultimate closing takeaway from Debbie Reynolds at TEDxGlenbeigh.
