One weekend in 2014, a teacher named Tony brought his students to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University to see Jie (Boundaries): Contemporary Art from Taiwan. ⠀ He stopped in front of this painting. ⠀ When the exhibition closed, the painting left Cornell. But he described it to others again and again. ⠀ For the next twelve years, he spoke of it to each new group of students, and described it to people in his classes who had never seen it. ⠀ This September, he found my website and wrote a letter he wasn’t sure anyone would read. In it, he recalled the moment he first saw the painting: ⠀ “Your piece was on the main platform — it was gorgeous. Captivating. Breathtaking even — and I mean no insult by this — but also a little unsettling because it depicted someone who may have been injured or bruised.” ⠀ Near the end of the letter, he wrote: ⠀ “I am simply looking to hold on to a piece of what I remember most …” ⠀ He asked me whether he could collect an archival print of this painting. ⠀ A painting stayed for twelve years in the heart of someone I had never met. And I knew nothing of it. ⠀ Ashen Face 15 – Aiko Fang Oil on canvas　259 × 194 cm　2011 ⠀ — ⠀ 2014年のある週末、トニーという一人の教師が学生たちを連れて、コーネル大学ハーバート・F・ジョンソン美術館の「界：台湾現代美術展」を訪れた。 ⠀ 彼は、この絵の前で足を止めた。 ⠀ 展覧会が終わり、この絵はコーネルを離れた。 けれど彼は、何度も何度も、この絵のことを人に語った。 ⠀ それからの十二年間、毎年新しくやって来る学生たちにこの絵の話をし、授業でこの絵を見たことのない人たちにも、その姿を語り続けた。 ⠀ 今年の九月、彼は私のウェブサイトを見つけ、誰かに読まれるかどうかもわからない手紙を書いた。手紙の中で、彼は初めてこの絵を見た瞬間をこう振り返っている。 ⠀ 「あなたの作品はメインの展示台にありました。美しく、心を奪われ、息をのむほどでした。失礼な意味ではないのですが、少し落ち着かない気持ちにもなりました。描かれた人が、傷ついているか、あざがあるように見えたからです。」 ⠀ 手紙の終わりに、彼はこう書いた。 ⠀ 「私はただ、いちばん心に残っているものの一部を、手元にとどめておきたいのです。」 ⠀ 彼は手紙の中で、この絵のプリントを一枚収蔵できないかと尋ねてきた。 ⠀ 一枚の絵が、会ったこともない人の心に、十二年間とどまっていた。 そして私は、そのことを何も知らなかった。 ⠀ 白面者15 – 方嘟嘟 キャンバスに油彩　259 × 194 cm　2011 ⠀ — ⠀ 2014 年的一個週末，一位名叫 Tony 的老師帶著學生走進康乃爾大學強生美術館，參觀「界：臺灣當代藝術展」。 ⠀ 他在這幅畫前停了下來。 ⠀ 展覽結束，這幅畫離開了康乃爾。 但他一次又一次向別人描述它。 ⠀ 接下來的十二年，他向每年新來的學生說起它，也向課堂上從未見過它的人描述它的樣子。 ⠀ 今年九月，他找到我的網站，寫了一封不確定會不會有人讀的信。他在信裡回憶第一次看見這幅畫的那一刻： ⠀ 「你的作品就在主展台上。它很美，令人著迷，甚至令人屏息。我沒有冒犯的意思，但它也讓人有點不安，因為畫中人看起來可能受了傷，或帶著瘀傷。」 ⠀ 信的最後，他說： ⠀ 「我只是想留住一部分，我記得最深的東西。」 ⠀ 他在信裡問我，能不能收藏一張這幅畫的微噴。 ⠀ 一幅畫，在一個我從未見過的人心裡放了十二年。 而我對此一無所知。 ⠀ 〈白面者15〉 油彩、畫布　259 × 194 cm　2011 taken in Johnson Museum of Art by @lochanpeng
