산은 늘 그 자리에 있습니다. 우리는 종종 산을 넘어야 할 것으로 여겨왔지만, 산은 넘어가 달라고 한 적이 없습니다. 그저 곁에 서 있을 뿐입니다.

〈산 곁에서: While the Mountains Stand>는 한불수교 140주년을 맞아 마련된 국제 미술 단체전입니다. 프랑스, 러시아, 독일, 노르웨이, 한국 출신의 작가 9명이 배렴가옥에 모였고, 서로 다른 자리에서 만들어온 작업들을 한옥의 곳곳에서 선보입니다.

이번 전시는 ‘넘어야 하는 것’에서 ‘바라보고 함께하는 것’으로, 삶에 대한 시선의 전환을 제안합니다. 서로 다른 언어와 풍토에서 살아온 작가들이 각자의 산을 가지고 왔습니다. K-컬처와 국제 문화가 만나는 자리에서, 그 산들이 나란히 놓입니다.

여름의 끝자락, 오래된 한옥 마당에서 잠시 멈춰 서 보세요. 서두르지 않고 곁에 머무는 일에 대해 생각하며 :)

Every edition of Helsinki Biennial expands the art collection that belongs to all residents of Helsinki 💚

From Helsinki Biennial 2025, glass flowers and a soundscape included in Norwegian artist duo LOCUS / Thale Blix Fastvold & Tanja Thorjussen's work have been acquired to the art collection of the City of Helsinki.

Zostera Marina’s song of increase is dedicated to a species of seagrass native to the Baltic Sea: common eelgrass (Zostera marina). In this project, the artists envisage a hopeful, speculative, utopian future for common eelgrass, which they imagine as blooming and thriving in the Baltic Sea.

Jokainen Helsinki Biennaali jättää jälkensä kaikkien helsinkiläisten omaan taidekokoelmaan 💚

Vuoden 2025 Helsinki Biennaalista kaupungin taidekokoelmaan on hankittu norjalaisen taiteilijaduon LOCUS / Thale Blix Fastvold & Tanja Thorjussenin teoskokonaisuuteen Zostera Marinan kasvun laulu kuuluneet lasikukinnot ja äänimaisema.

Teoskokonaisuuden lähtökohtana toimii Itämeressä kasvava meriajokas (Zostera marina). LOCUS on kuvitellut meriajokkaalle toivorikkaan ja utopistisen tulevaisuuden, jossa se kukkii ja kukoistaa Itämeressä.

Today 21/9 is the last day of the @helsinkibiennial and the possibility to see our works Zostera Marina’s Song of Increase at @hamhelsinki and @vallisaari.fi in its current form 🌟
We are excited to announce the acquisition of the installations by @hamhelsinki and are immensely grateful that this song of increase will remain near the Baltic Sea and work its magic for the common eelgrass in years to come 🌾💫

We want to thank the amazing team at @hamhelsinki for supporting us in the journey of realizing this ambitious project 🌟

LOCUS / Tanja Thorjussen & Thale Blix Fastvold’s artwork for Helsinki Biennial 2025 Zostera Marina’s song of increase (2025) is dedicated to a species of seagrass native to the Baltic Sea: common eelgrass. The artists envisage a hopeful, speculative, utopian future for the common eelgrass.

The artwork includes a performance in dialogue with their art, as an invocation, and an honoring of Zostera Marina.

At HAM, a documentary film produced by John Nurminen Foundation about the making of the work will be screened. The film will be shown during the Baltic Sea Week in the HAM hall.

This foundational species provides shelter to many other species, reduces erosion by binding sediments to the sea floor, and improves water quality by absorbing nutrients. Sadly, marine eutrophication has seen a decline in common eelgrass meadows. In the low-saline habitat of the Baltic Sea, common eelgrass does not spread by flowering, but mostly by sprouting from its rhizome or from stems that break away and carry fertile seeds to new areas.
In this project, the artists envisage a hopeful, speculative, utopian future for common eelgrass, which they imagine as blooming and thriving in the Baltic Sea. The first part of their work consists of glass flowers, sound elements and a performance staged on Vallisaari’s freshwater pond. The second part on display in HAM consists of a bed of aquatic plants in an aquarium, glass blooms and a soundscape.
The work was created in collaboration with the artwork partner, the John Nurminen Foundation.
