Every edition of Helsinki Biennial expands the art collection that belongs to all residents of Helsinki 💚

From Helsinki Biennial 2025, glass flowers and a soundscape included in Norwegian artist duo LOCUS / Thale Blix Fastvold & Tanja Thorjussen's work have been acquired to the art collection of the City of Helsinki.

Zostera Marina’s song of increase is dedicated to a species of seagrass native to the Baltic Sea: common eelgrass (Zostera marina). In this project, the artists envisage a hopeful, speculative, utopian future for common eelgrass, which they imagine as blooming and thriving in the Baltic Sea.

Jokainen Helsinki Biennaali jättää jälkensä kaikkien helsinkiläisten omaan taidekokoelmaan 💚

Vuoden 2025 Helsinki Biennaalista kaupungin taidekokoelmaan on hankittu norjalaisen taiteilijaduon LOCUS / Thale Blix Fastvold & Tanja Thorjussenin teoskokonaisuuteen Zostera Marinan kasvun laulu kuuluneet lasikukinnot ja äänimaisema.

Day 2 - Helsinki Biennial on Vallisaari Island with @ukfriendsnmwa 🇫🇮

Seeing art in nature and inside abandoned buildings taken over by nature was an absolute dream. The ferry to the island was equally mesmeric.

Here, interspecies connectivity, bioluminescence and the use of recycled materials and natural matter were common themes.

The textile installation by Filipina artist Geraldine Javier, the glass installation by Mexican artist @tcandiani and the cast bronze sculptures of discarded inflatable dolphin swimming toys by @sbjarland stood out for me! ✨✨

All artworks are tagged other than images 2-4 by Geraldine Javier.

Have you already visited Helsinki Biennial 2025? 🌊

Sun Effects is proud to have light up several works at HAM – Helsinki Art Museum and on the beautiful Vallisaari Island. The designs have been realized in close collaboration with the artists, using dynamic lighting to bring the creations to life.

This enchanting piece is waiting for you at HAM – the perfect field trip for a rainy day! 🌧️

In an ongoing artistic research, LOCUS explores the connection between how we respond to environmental challenges and our renewed spiritual interest. Their work, commissioned by Helsinki Biennial, imagines a utopian future where common eelgrass thrives in the Baltic Sea. At HAM, the installation combines a bed of aquatic plants in an aquarium, delicate glass blooms, and a soundscape. A companion piece can be discovered on Vallisaari’s freshwater pond.

Helsinki Biennial runs until 21 September! ✨
