It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Sobieniak, founder of Root River Rod Co. He passed Thursday, September 22nd after a year long battle with cancer. Steve was an avid fly fisher, a skilled rod maker, and a great man. He greeted every customer like a friend and had a true gift of meeting people where they were and helping them get where they wanted to go. He will be deeply missed.

Services will take place at Camp Creek Farms in Preston, Minnesota on October 8th from 2-5 pm. A go fund me account has been set up in his memory. Link in bio.

Middle dude and I spent the day down in the driftless with the man @lpoutdoors chasing all types of fish! Dude smashed his PB Brown, and caught his first(multiple) Smallmouth and Rainbow(multiple) on the fly! As a group we caught 7 species today, Arlo was able to catch 6 of them! Today was awesome!

Feels like summer out there and the trout are feeling it to. The trout are now starting to slow down during the hottest part of the day. Fly fishing during mornings and evenings is best. It’s time to start bringing a thermometer and check river temps during the day. Follow for more info. by @lpoutdoors

A day on a good river with well dialed friends feels flawless. You know that you don't need to point out the slot on the far river right, the net is in the boat where it's supposed to be, and lunch is not going to have that amateurish soggy bread from trying to get too fancy with tomatoes.

The boys went back to the bayou. Our 4th year in a row and we hit the perfect weather window in between two cold fronts.

Day 1 was nothing short of perfect conditions. Calm winds, Warm Temperatures “Compared to MN” and hungry Big Bull Red Fish.

Day 2. We had a glassy morning with a long boat ride to where we found tailing Red Fish as far as the eye could see and it looked like something from a movie. We managed a few before the wind and cold blew in.

By far the best fishing we have had yet. Can’t wait for next year!

First fly fishing float trip of 2026.

It was a challenge to get the boat into and out of the water. But we managed to get the boat through the drifted up snow and across the shelf ice and into the water.

Fishing was slow to be honest but it has us fired up for the 2026 guide season! Prime dates are booking fast than ever this year so if you’re interested in getting a guide trip Book Online sooner then later.

Big things are coming for 2026! Stay tuned.
