There’s a lot I could say about catching this fish today but I don’t think I have enough available characters! 😅 Super fun day with @lpoutdoors and @tayphills today! I was hoping I was due to stick a fish soon, never did I dream my slump would be broken with a beautiful natural Tiger! These days, I may not catch as many fish as I used to but I can at least say I’m not like these losers live scoping like a video game “catching” them! 😎

Middle dude and I spent the day down in the driftless with the man @lpoutdoors chasing all types of fish! Dude smashed his PB Brown, and caught his first(multiple) Smallmouth and Rainbow(multiple) on the fly! As a group we caught 7 species today, Arlo was able to catch 6 of them! Today was awesome!

No clients. No schedule. This was guides day off 2026.

Nobody got hurt this round, only feelings.

And @bretoelt we waited for hours for you and finally had to hit the water.

This is Lance of @rootriverrodco — fly shop owner, fishing guide and unofficial river reporter of @lanesboromn. The kind of guy who doesn’t just know the rivers and streams, but seems stitched into the area waters.

We rolled through in 2024 with Lance and Bret chasing a short piece for @theflyfishjournal . Good days, clean light, fish rising — but I left with that nagging feeling… like we only skimmed the surface of something deeper moving under it all.

So we’re heading back.

This summer and fall we’re building our annual film around @taylorbermanart as he wanders the surrounding streams — chasing the same quiet instincts with a pen that most of us try to find with a fly rod.

It’s about process. Observation. The slow burn of getting it right — or not — and going back anyway.

More to come…..

Feels like summer out there and the trout are feeling it to. The trout are now starting to slow down during the hottest part of the day. Fly fishing during mornings and evenings is best. It’s time to start bringing a thermometer and check river temps during the day. Follow for more info.
