Today I released my debut album Lake Burst! 🌊🤍

This album has been in the pipeline for years and I am so proud of it.

I started writing this album on my return to Ireland after living in Trinidad & Tobago during the pandemic. I began visiting Lough Bré as a way of trying to ground myself back in Ireland, I was searching for a sense of home and belonging by connecting with nature and this mountain-lake landscape. I found it.

At its essence this album is a chapter in my personal healing journey; a search for myself in the waters of the lake, a journey downwards and inwards, a death and rebirth process, a search for something deeper and more enduring than identity, an encounter with spirit, an ode to a glacial lake.

I won’t say much more, I’ll let the music speak for itself.

Lake Burst is available to stream wherever you choose to listen to music.

It has been published as a 12” double vinyl with a booklet insert. It is absolutely gorgeous and full of insights into the wider Lake Burst project. You can purchase it on Bandcamp by following the link in my bio. 🔗

On October 29th I will perform the full Lake Burst album at @nationalgalleryofireland in the Shaw Room with a live band.

I’ll be performing the full Lake Burst album live twice over the coming weeks.

Once at @rha.arts on October 23rd - that show is SOLD OUT 🕊️

And the second time at @nationalgalleryofireland on October 29th for a much larger audience.

This should be a fantastic show, it’s certainly going to be in a beautiful setting in the Shaw Room.

Very much hoping to see some of you there.

Come see me perform my Lake Burst album live with a full band at @rha.arts

This performance is my way of closing out my exhibition and will happen inside my silk installation in the OhUiginn gallery.

Friday 23rd October at 7pm I’ll be joined by @beewjay @portamentous @mr.brendan11 and @derekwhyte.bass to offer an intimate rendition of the album.

It was so special to perform the soundtrack of my Lake Burst film last night at @rha.arts with @beewjay

I had always envisioned bringing all the elements of my practice together in a gallery so last night, bringing live performance into the space, was very special.

And thank you for @alicerekab for your thoughtful and sensitive questions. You really showed so much care for me and my work in your approach to the conversation we had and I felt very moved by that.

I hope that those of you who came enjoyed the evening.

𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 - 𝗠𝗮ï𝗮 𝗡𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘀 – 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸

Join us this evening at the RHA for a screening of Maïa Nunes’ Lake Burst short film accompanied by a live performance of the original soundtrack by Maïa Nunes on vocals with Brendan Jenkinson on clarinet.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between Nunes and artist Alice Rekab. Bringing these two distinctive artists into conversation will reveal how their practices explore similar themes and resonate with each other, thus contextualising and offering deeper insight into Nunes’ exhibition and wider practice.

This short film, included in Nunes’ current Lake Burst exhibition at RHA, is part of a series of artworks responding to Lough Bré and exploring the geo-mythology of Irish lakes as sites of healing, symbols of death and rebirth, and portals to the Otherworld and subconscious realms.

Found these beautiful post-cards Lynnette @weareliveart made with a still from the Lake Burst film for Live Collision Festival @livecollision in 2024 on my bookshelf this morning.

I performed the film-score for the first time at Live Collision in 2025, and have been doing it ever since.

I love offering this performance because it is so compact and clear cut (unlike many of my other performances that are improvised and meandering).

15 minutes of focused intensity. And a FULL journey happens in that timespan. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that we step out of time for a moment.

Really looking forward to performing the film-score again tonight at @rha.arts at 7pm with @beewjay

Some BTS from filming Lake Burst in 2023, ahead of my performance this Friday 9th October at @rha.arts

I’ll be performing the original film score alongside @beewjay

We’ll be live-scoring the film as it’s screening, sort of like how orchestras used to play live in cinemas for silent movies.

This short 15 minute performance will be followed by a conversation with fellow artist @alicerekab

Delighted this piece was published in @rte_culture today.

I tried to write about my work, but Paula Meehan summed it up perfectly when she wrote;

“I offer this response, then, as a libation to the fluidity and waters of Maïa Nunes’s imagination! For she enchants by means of watersongs, waterspells, and warnings, a sweep of sound to be graven in vinyl. Her powerful, uncompromising album channels the very voice of water singular, and of waters in chorus, sacred and profane. Water in the service of healing the heart, soul, mind. Thus the wounded artist works for us all, by mending herself.”
