Lebanese composer, producer, sound artist and DJ Jana Saleh presents I Only Have Eyes For You, her debut album.

I Only Have Eyes For You is a single, continuous 32 minute composition divided into seven sections. All instruments and programming were conceived and performed by Saleh, and the album is built around a vocal sample from Mohamed Abdel Wahab’s “Gafnouhu Allam Al Ghazal”,with lyrics by the Lebanese poet Bechara Al Khoury (al-Akhtal as-Saghir), first heard in the 1933 Egyptian musical film al-Warda al-Baida (The White Rose).

The title of “Gafnouhu Allam Al Ghazal” names both its subject and its form: ghazal, the classical Arabic poetic tradition devoted to beauty, longing, and the pain of separation.

The album developed from Saleh’s ongoing research into tarab, the Arabic tradition in which singer, musicians, audience and space combine to create a shared performance, and follows earlier reinterpretations of recordings by Umm Kulthum, Zaki Nassif and Sabah Fakhri, which received support from Late Junction (BBC Radio 3), NDR Blue, Rinse FM and WFMU, among others.

Born in Beirut in 1980, Saleh studied piano under Boghos Gelalian, musical advisor to the Rahbani brothers who played a significant role in Fairuz’s career, before studying music synthesis and electronic composition at Berklee College of Music. She was a key figure in Beirut’s alternative music scene of the 2010s, establishing the B-ROOT music studio and co-producing the debut album by legendary Lebanese indie band Mashrou’ Leila, alongside work in theatre, contemporary art, commercial production and DJing. Following her move to London in 2020, she began focusing on reinterpreting historic Arabic recordings through contemporary electronic composition. I Only Have Eyes For You is the first album to emerge from this work.

**LINK IN BIO FOR CASSETTE PRE-ORDER**

On all streaming platforms now, The Devil 魔鬼 is the first track from Howie Lee’s forthcoming 7-track EP Sun, Dew, Gold Arise (Part 1) available 25.11.26 digitally and as a limited edition cassette (via Bandcamp). Sun, Dew, Gold Arise (Part 1) features seven AI-rendered voices from Howie using his own voice as a driving force, continuously dismantling, translating, and reconstructing it until it drifts away from the notion of self-expression. Although the work employs extensive generative audio technologies, its core is built upon long cycles of repetition and manual editing -motifs repeatedly deconstructed, spliced, and reassembled, algorithmic fragments meticulously polished taken in Beijing, China by @maisumdiscos

🎸FUJI ROCK REPORT! 🤘🏿12 hours after a 24 hour journey to Japan I was en-route to @fujirock_jp - one way to deal with jet-lag I guess! Often cited as the 🇯🇵 equivalent to Glastonbury (but thankfully a lot smaller) the festival has typical big name UK/US acts plus loads of local talent - which is what I was there to check. My favourite stage was Orange Echo, run by Negi from @soul_beat_asia festival. The late night DJ stage Gan Ban Square was also good fun - killer visuals. A huge, huge thanks to Jason @hanimaya for inviting me - was great to hear him drop some cumbia in his DJ sets across the weekend. Swipe left for my highlights - most of the acts mentioned have music you can listen to on streaming services

Bon odori opening party! A respectful nod to traditional Japanese festivals and a lovely participatory way to open a festival

@leskhmers.rom - super groovy Japanese big band playing Cambodian music with heart and soul

@ogreyouasshole_official - best-named band at the festival who were peerless when firing out propulsive, bass heavy, electro tinged krautrock grooves

@inouesonoko_infotoka - Jazzy, bluesy, playful and unpredictable - a festival highlight

@blackboboi - glacial moody trip hop that sounded best when they let rip

@maya_ongaku - lush, full-sounding cinematic psych with touches of sax and flute - hotly-tipped

@maoam496 - Japanese bluegrass vibes

@natsuki_fujimoto - heavy, intense DJ who really gave it all behind the decks.

E.O.U @eoumuse - another festival highlight who I was lucky to catch twice - melodic, high-octane dance music that was constantly morphing into new shapes and often felt like it was gonna fall apart (a good thing!) - i couldn’t stop dancing

@suzumeno_tears + @remon_nakanishi - folky vibes

Bong Jae In Gang @bongjeingan - unpredictable Korean free rock

Silent poets @silentpoets_official - veteran Japanese dubbed it out nicely at the charming Pyramid Garden stage

And was nice to bump into some friends -!Oki’s son + drummer @manawkano + the one and only Japanese sound engineer legend @yasmix007… was a bit gutted to not have seen any bears, but maybe that was a good thing really 🐻🐻🐻🐻 taken in Fuji Rock Festival by @maisumdiscos

It was an utter joy to hang with @kingayisobaghana and fam (@sulleyayuune @francis_ayamga
+ Bonniface). All the shows were a blast, the guys give 200% when they play live - they may only take to the stage with a few kologos (the homemade stringed instrument the king makes/plays) and percussion, but their utter mastery of these instruments gave the effect of a band twice their size. I loved how they don’t have a set-list too - the King just rips into songs and everyone is so in synch with one another that they don’t miss a beat. The shows where the Ghanian community came out were particularly memorable - the musicians’ interactions with them and vice versa elevated the shows to a communal experience (as opposed to your typical “gig”). As there’s no stage at Oto friends of the band would come up and dance right next to them, and my heart leapt when during Sule’s support act a friend of his walked onto the stage whilst he was performing to mop his brow and neck ❤️. Bristol was probably my favourite show - the sound was super heavy and people were dancing from the moment that Sule took to the stage - a Ghanian family friend of his was at the show celebrating her birthday with her family and when Sule gave her mum a shout out in one of his songs she exploded with joy ❤️❤️ Often call and responses with the audience feel a bit overdone/manufactured but King Ayisoba’s battering of the audience with his catchphrases - BATTAZOI! and his goat impressions MAAAAH/BAAAH felt so honest - i swear at one point in Bristol the audience and him traded MAAHS for a whole minute (see video)!
They can also soundcheck in 15 minutes, have zero airs and graces about them and just bring positive vibes all the time. Can’t wait for the follow-up Europe tour this November - hit me up if you’re a venue and wanna’ book them - you won’t be disappointed!

Their forthcoming album PURE CONFUSION, prod by Adrian Sherwood can be pre-ordered on our Bandcamp: https://ayisoba.bandcamp.com/album/pure-confusion or link in bio

Huge shout outs to everyone who supported: @zeamakkum, Bettina, Marissa @crossover.frequencies, Jonas, @syra.trek @cafeotodalston @cornishbank @thejamjar_bristol
