🌍 Today is Earth Overshoot Day – the day we’ve used up more resources than the planet can regenerate in a year. 🎉👀 We’re excited to launch make-a-thek – a bold, EU-funded initiative that brings together 9 international partners to reimagine public libraries as hubs for making, learning, and innovation for local communities. 📚 🤝🧵🪡 ✂️ Where Libraries Meet Making, Fashion, Heritage Crafts & Circular Futures 📍 Over the next three years, we’ll be setting up hands-on maker spaces in public libraries across Europe. These creative hubs will explore circular fashion, traditional crafts, and local innovation – all rooted in the values of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, inclusivity, and beauty. 🛠️ Our first pilot spaces will open in early 2026 🌍 Everything we create – tools, guides, ideas – will be open-source 📚 Our mission: test a scalable co-creation model with libraries, building on existing community networks Curious about who’s behind the project? 👉 Follow our journey and meet our 9 amazing partner organisations #linkinbio Stay tuned – this is just the beginning. 🌍 10 towns. 3 countries. 12 days. 450 people. Here's the story of how a moving makerspace brought circular fashion and crafts to 10 towns in 3 countries, and 450+ participants. Last summer, @makeathek 's van, Matty, hit the road. Packed with a tent, tables, a handful of domestic sewing machines, many other tools and materials and the shared expertise of dedicated local partners. The van transformed ten local libraries across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania into engaging community hubs, into circular nodes. From leftover yarn to „new“ yarn 🧶♻️ We recently joined Claire and Wonek from @tufting_berlin for a workshop together with @hilo_textiles, exploring what can happen to the yarn scraps left behind by tufting workshops and everyday making. Instead of letting these leftovers go to waste, we went through the entire recycling process step by step, from sorting and preparing the different yarn scraps, to grading and processing the fibres, all the way to spinning them into new yarn. It was a fascinating look at how much potential there is in materials that are usually considered waste and how they can find their way back into the making process. by @makeathek

✨ We zijn officieel geopend! Afgelopen woensdag vierden we de opening van onze pop- up maakbib in Bibliotheek Permeke. Met een inspirerende panel talk, een eerste kennismaking met de ruimte en meteen al heel wat creatieve handen aan het werk! Er werd geweven, geborduurd, genaaid en volop geëxperimenteerd. Een dikke merci aan iedereen die langskwam en deze opening zo fijn maakte. 💛 Ben je 12 jaar of ouder en wil je zelf aan de slag met textiel? Kom elke woensdag van 14 tot 17 uur langs om te experimenteren, kleding te herstellen, upcyclen en personaliseren.
