TENE•MENT The Book?, edited and sequenced in 2019 and basically shelved. Part photobook, part snapshot reportage, part diary, fine art monograph? This is essentially a document of TENEMENTs many adventures in 2016-2017.

Assembled from darkroom prints with their lovely grain I made at a darkroom I put together in the basement storage room at @crutchofmemory, thanks for dealing with my oddball comings and goings.

Kahil El’Zabar & David Murray, Cafe Coda, Madison Wisconsin June 2017.

I spent the day listening to several LP’s by Ethnic Heritage Ensemble with my buddy @ottorydman. It’s interesting to note that Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has an album produced and recorded in Finland at the legendary Finnvox studios, and released on Leo records. We were wondering what Edward Vesala and the other local guys were thinking when they were recording their huge piano ballad, I mean my first reaction was “damn, this guy can sing!”. I’m a little sad I can’t make it to @vareetfest to see Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. While we were listening to records I immediately thought of this photo I took of Kahil and David when they came through Madison Wisconsin quite some years ago. They played a deeply moving piece by the then recently deceased Arthur Blythe, one of the absolute greats of the music. by @manic_exposure

Cülo at Outerspace, Kansas City Kansas, summer of 2012 en route to Chaos in Tejas.

I had totally forgotten about the ambitious plan to put out some deluxe live tape of this gig with some of my photos until @amospitsch brought it up on his post at @odd__note . I remember now that I had some crazy idea to make a sort of moebius strip photo insert. This is from a full 36 exposure roll of film, it’s basically a collage with no frame lines. Brief little vignettes and mash-ups of action: moshing, diving, errant exposures, etc.. I thought I had a nicer contact print of the roll, but I do not and I think whats presented here is a nice representation of it. by @manic_exposure

John Cülo, outside the gig, Chaos in Tejas 2012(?).

Continuing down the meta data date stamp. Cülo and Tenement had an odd sense of camaraderie, which I think if you just looked on the outside maybe from the split 7” it wouldn’t really make sense. But, we were both pretty snobby (diehard fans) about music in a particular way that, and we loved to rock. Coming up in the music at the same time too. A great rock band. by @manic_exposure

Putting my GS645S to work right away. Unfortunately some Tmax 400 I was gifted suffers from some airport scanner fog and, I can tell that this film has lost almost a stop of exposure and there’s a little base fog. The excess grain is also a little bit of a give away too. by @manic_exposure

Amos and Riley in Appleton Wisconsin. 2010s, maybe 2011-12.

Going through those Dawn of Humans photos led me to some nice images from back then. Here’s a one off (I think) with Riley pinch hitting for Eric. I think we were gearing up for a festival somewhere in Illinois. by @manic_exposure

Olavi Louhivuori, Eivind Lønning, and Kim Myhr at We Jazz 2021.

I take a lot of photos, and I always want to get into the darkroom to get a nice print with the grain and highlights just so. But what usually ends up happening since I don’t have anything close to a studio is that my photos get filed into negative sleeves and if the image doesnt hit right on first blush it kinda gets canned. A little arbitrary but so it goes.

Today I saw @wejazzhelsinki had a new album out, and upon further inspection it was a live set from 2021. Looking at the artists involved I started thinking, I’m pretty sure I have some photos of these guys. After looking through my negative binder, there it was. That was a cold night in Helsinki I remember. The music kinda reflects that in its own smoldering way: cool sounds and definite ebbs and flows and dynamics. I’ve been listening to it at work all day, punctuated by late 90s/early 2000 grindcore and powerviolence. by @manic_exposure

With @temenent on the west coast in 2011. During my insufferable free-jazz phase (did that ever end?), I must have dragged everyone to check out the church of John Coltrane. I remember being let down by the fact that it was a sparse room, like many places of worship and fellowship are. I hadn’t considered that the devotions to the life and music of JC was what made that place special.

The convoluted story: last löyly in Turku.

My brother from another mother, Jad, begrudgingly ducked out from his evil corporate job to visit what Jimmy Kimmel would probably call “the best country” on earth. Wow. A lot can happen in 5 days. by @manic_exposure

Marthe Lea Band, Kerava Jazz 2026.

I’m still having fun playing around with my Olympus point and shoot digital camera. To be honest it’s funny that trends in aesthetics and screen resolutions for social media basically prove that progress peaked at 2008 in 2026. I’m not sure if pro’s back then were super happy with the state of digital photography, but looking at this I feel I could make a decent sized print (8x10?) from this file. What I found most useful to add some more life and faking some resolution/sharpness (not sure if these are the correct words) is to add some noise. Seriously, I add some RGB noise in GIMP. This comes from something I observe to be a satisfying, and maybe a psycho-visual effect, that grain (noise) adds a familiar and dynamic quality to the image.

Anyway, Marthe Lea Band traversed so much music that night. Folk music to free jazz to the euro-improv quiet-prov moments, tons of music. I felt a little bummed though, it was obvious the previous times Marth Lea Band played Helsinki they were crowd favorites but this time the hall was a little empty feeling. Thats the road though, and I hope they come back. I can’t help but think of Jone Takamäki in relation to Marthe Lea Band. by @manic_exposure
