odd note odd ppl, v.28 @manic_exposure Jesse was in town last month from Finland and scoured our boxes of jazz CDs that hadn't hit the racks quite yet; in pursuit of post bop & improvised jazz. Jesse has long been the connoisseur of the commercially inaccessible and extreme musics: from Z'ev to Entombed to Peter Brötzmann to fucking BLACK FLAG, the dude has turned me onto a lot of music on the fringe since we were teenagers. In tandem, I've pushed melody on him. It's a beautiful symbiotic thing. The lil band we do together was born of this concept. Here's a run down of his haul: -Mal Waldron Quartet - Quadrologue At Utopia -Mal Waldron - The Opening -Mal Waldron - Moods -Mal Waldron - Spring In Prague -Mal Waldron - Much More -Horace Tapscott - Live At I.U.C.C. -Horace Tapscott - Dissent Or Descent -Horace Tapscott - Thoughts Of Dar -Horace Tapscott - Aiee! The Phantom -Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - Flight 17 -Live From Soundscape - Interpretations Of Monk -Mal Waldron/Johnny Dyani - Live At Jazz Unite -Mal Waldron - Free At Last -Archie Shepp - Steam -Archie Shepp - Attica Blues Big Band -Arthur Blythe - Retroflection -Arthur Blythe - Night Song -Arthur Blythe - Calling Card -Arthur Blythe - Basic Blythe -Arthur Blythe - Hipmotism -Arthur Blythe - Spirits In The Field -Arthur Blythe - Today's Blues -Wilber Morris - Wilber Force -David Murray - Flowers For Albert -Sonny Fortune - Laying It Down -Mal Waldron - Mal, Dance And Soul -David Murray - Live At Lower Manhattan Ocean Club . . . I went home for my birthday over the weekend and stopped at @odd__note. In some way shape or form, @amospitsch opened my mind up to accept all of these records. From @manic_exposure playing the iconic bass riff from sieges conform between songs at tenement shows (I still play this song at least monthly and when I’m too angry or frustrated to put into words), and amos getting into the weirdest records and genres ever and challenging me to appreciate them along with him (yacht rock still sucks though). I owe a lot of my tastes and open mindedness to my time spent on long drives, late nights at home playing records in his recently bought pile, and of course our hours together digging. If there’s a list of important people in my life amos is quite near the top. His shop is in Appleton, wi and online. It’s open today. It’s the most curated and stacked store I’ve ever seen. From sealed obscurities to beat copies of holy grails…he’s got it all. Of course he does. He always did. Thanks for all you do, amos. And thanks to the friends I got to see while I was there. You made returning back to a complicated place feel easy and gentle. Below is the list of things I picked up. Order something from the shop. It also closes nightly I believe so as not to be overwhelmed with orders and to restock in between. If you can’t find something this store, I think your tastes are too rigid.//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Siege - Siege Robbie Basho - The Falconer’s Arm 1 Robbie Basho - Song Of The Stallion Bill Evans - Portrait In Jazz The Swirlies - Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music John Coltrane - My Favorite Things Pete Drake - Forever Alex Chilton - Free Again: The 1970 Sessions Quartette Tres Bien - Stepping Out! Quartette Tres Bien - Our Thing Lee Hazlewood & Ann-Margret - The Cowboy & The Lady Johnny Lytle - The Soulful Rebel The Music Machine - Double Yellow Line Last Friday’s Fire - I Can’t Help The Way I Feel Bear - Greetings, Children Of Paradise The Stained Glass - If I Needed Someone Tenement - 2023 tape

“Last time New Jazz Quintet was in Europe was around… 15 years ago. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that most of the concerts were sold out, or packed with people thirsty for their music. Completely sold out gigs in Paris, Brussels, Copenhagen, two sold out and packed nights in Warsaw & Katowice, then over 400 people sitting in a breath-taking Hall of the Giants, a frescoed hall in Palazzo Liviano in Padova; at the end of the tour we met over 200 people in an old Teatro Dragoni in Meldola. Nevertheless it came as a bit of a shock to us that so many people were showing up. In Brussels, the room was packed with standing audience, and Otomo asked me - How are you doing this? It’s magic!, to which I responded - It’s not me, it’s you guys!! It really felt like Europe has been waiting for them.” Excerpt & photos from Tour Memories booklet, which you will find inside the special edition 5xLP box of ONJQ Live in Poland (2024), released on @pocketflowerrecords together with @wschodnietriady & @no.earplugs ❤️‍🔥 Head out to www.pocketflower.art and secure your box before it’s sold out! #onjq #ONJQ #EU2024 #noearplugsbooking #noearplugs #otomoyoshihide #otomoyoshihidenewjazzquintet

What's Wrong With Leo Diamond? In the 1930s, Leo Diamond toured the world with his harmonica group, Harmonica Rascals. Dude even premiered his Concerto For Harmonica at Queen's Hall in London. He did his damnedest to cultivate a serious appreciation for the harmonica for decades- to no lasting avail. He died in the mid-60s and at that point in his life and career, his work was generally thought of as bland, easy listening schlock. He did, however, manage to crank out one of my favorite lounge/exotica albums ever made: Subliminal Sounds. The music herein isn't terribly captivating but it IS augmented by sound effects and eccentric studio driven proto-psychedelia. Otherworldly shrieking, wind, rain, and night sounds. The trickling, bubbling water sounds that kick off side two were one of the reasons we mic'd up the bathtub at BFG in 2014 for A Frightening Place For Normal People on the @temenent album Predatory Headlights. There's a lot about that album that is influenced by work like Subliminal Sounds and its lounge/hi-fi cousins of the mid-century time period. (See pics 2-8) Taken at face-value it's easy to see why music like Diamond's wasn't taken seriously in its time. It's odd, but square. A half century passed before technology ushered in a new age of appreciation for music like this; be it through the art of sampling and recontextualizing it or by exposing the music to people who would never have sought it out without the ease and convenience of the internet. Which gets me thinking: who was this music really made for in its time? Can virtuosity in and of itself nurture an audience? If not, then what ignited the spark of say... Jacqueline du Pre? Yo-Yo Ma? Glenn Gould? Charlie Parker? If so, then what's wrong with Leo Diamond? We're finishing up some accounting for the year, we'll be back soon, we promise!! In the meantime, get in touch to sell us your oddball records, we want em: oddnoterecords@gmail.com . . . . #leodiamond #subliminalsounds #loungerecords #exoticarecords #rarevinyl #vinylrecords #records #vinyl #strangerecords

The Separatist Party = Mike Reed, Ben LaMar Gay, Bitchin Bajas & Marvin Tate. Their album was co-released by We Jazz & Astral Spirits in 2023 and now the band makes their eagerly-awaited Helsinki debut on 30.11. at We Jazz Festival at Korjaamo. wejazz.fi/2024 "In a year that featured a number of themed albums, Mike Reed’s 'The Separatist Party' was the most compelling. Inspired by the true story of a hoarder whose life and death were spent in isolation, it’s a theme likely to resonate with pretty much everyone in the pandemic era. The drummer—joined by cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, saxophonist Rob Frye, guitarist Cooper Crain, synthesizer player Dan Quinlivan, and vocalist Marvin Tate—attend to the emotional nuance of a life in isolation, a state of existence that runs the gamut from somber to celebratory, all of it intense and heartfelt." Oslo people! On 28th November at @nasjonaljazzscene you will have the one and only chance to see a premiere of a brand new, exciting collaboration between Andreas Røysum Ensemble & the one and only Marvin Tate! Do not miss out on this!! Totally new music, new future, uncompromising, expressive & inclusive musical party!
