Ou-Mun Screen — Mariana Rola Pereira & Rival WHY I CHOSE IT FROM LDW26 I was immediately drawn to the story behind this piece. Mariana Rola Pereira brings together references to Macau, where she was born with the very Portuguese tradition of Arraiolos embroidery, while Rival brings another layer through its amazing woodworking skills. I find the result incredibly elegant, but what interests me most is the idea behind it: tradition doesn’t have to remain frozen in time. It can travel, meet another culture or another craft, and become something completely contemporary. That dialogue between cultures, materials and makers is one of the reasons I wanted Ou-Mun to be part of our first Edit. Michele Fajtmann, Founder of Lisbon Design Week Available now for purchase through The LDW Edit. Discover the piece via the link in bio. by @marianarpda
Imagine Matisse, Botticelli’s Venus and I sat down for dinner 🪐 This piece is what came out of that night: human figures fusing into sun faces, branches becoming limbs, myth blurring into memory. What is what? Who is whom? The lines keep shifting the longer you look. This piece is called ‘renascence’. May we rise in grace. @raiostudio ✨ Thank you Hanna and Kareena for capturing it so beautifully, and for the connections that made this piece possible in the first place. #arraiolos#textileart#interiordesign#contemporarytapestry#artforsale by @marianarpda
Uma cosmologia pessoal. The instant the cosmos arranges itself into unity. An exploration of ancient Chinese cosmology, balancing the forces that hold the world together. A symbolic imagery 🏔️🌊☁️ I’m a child of duality. Spend my childhood immersed in the atmosphere, rhythms and contrasts of the East, yet I grew up and structured my visual grammar and culture here, in the west. This multicultural heritage has left an indelible mark on me and a constant need to bridge contrasts and to inhabit the space between. It’s precisely from the crossroads that this work is born. I chose to take the Arraiolos embroidery, a historic, dense and deeply structural technique of the Portuguese tradition, and remove it from its common place. My goal is to lift it from the floor, free it from the rigid, traditional geometry of rugs and transform it into function, unique and authorial object. By creating this screen I sought to materialize the harmony of opposites. On one side, the opulence and meticulous detail, the graphic weight of the embroidered wool. On the other, the purity, freshness of raw artisanal linen (family treasures used in this work). The circular structure embraces it all, functioning as a portal that unites craftsmanship with contemporary design sculpture. Yesterday, June 7th, we closed the debut exhibition of @so_ta_que Sotaque started with the incredible @miguelsaboyam crazy dream, and the rest of us, the crazy crowd, joined it: myself, @m_a_c_h_e_i_a , @eneidalombetavares , @le_brimet @mariarolapereira , the invisible conductor Gaia Lutz and later on @gutorequena . We gave it all, and I am very thankful for each of you. Sotaque is one of those projects where we all learned from the beginning, and I am quite sure the learning is continuing. It was a realistic, challenging and beautiful journey in which vision and future perspective were the driving forces. The designers’ work presented was full of stories and narratives that complemented one another in an unintentional yet unique way. Thank you to the people who stood with us since the beginning: @moldostudios , @lisbondesignweek , and partners. @ariel.damata for the images, the angel @flaviafilho for the beautiful food and service, The @clube_b.leza for opening your house to us, a space that is a home to the Lusophone community in Lisbon. Our dear friends and incredible artists who made us dance: @beatsbydiima @indi_mateta and the iconic banda b.leza. To the friends, clients, fellow creatives, and the public who showed up and passed the word, thank you very, very much; without you, it wouldn’t have been so magical. (@miguelsaboyam thank you for not letting me quit.) 📷 @grreenjuice #Sotaque #lisbondesignweek #lusophonedesign #collectiveexhibition #authoraldesign by @marianarpda
It was all worth it! 🐦‍🔥 To everyone who came, who looked closely, who asked questions and stayed a little longer than expected: thank you! You brought these pieces to life in a way I couldn’t have done alone. This work shines at the crossroads of ancestral craft and new form. East and West. Arraiolos embroidery as a living platform, something that breathes differently. A tool I use to create my thing. Pieces that hang, divide, illuminate. That are at once art and function, heritage and invention. It’s not only about creating with ancient techniques, it’s how we craft them with new forms, design and purpose. And honestly, I love the conversations that follow. Someone said to me last week: “Function as poetry. Craft as identity.” I’m keeping that. None of this happens alone. Quality work never does. The bar keeps rising. Each year we see more, bolder, more surprising: pieces with deeper story, stronger character, uncompromising design. That is the direction, I believe. A hand full of people made this exhibition possible - you sure know who you are 🍀 But I want to praise the extraordinary woodwork of @rivalthemaker his ability to work under pressure and solve problems in real time is a craft and an insurance in itself. @filipamenino and her team for saying yes even when it felt out of reach. That kind of trust is everything, I mean it! @so_ta_que , thank you for building a community rooted in different technologies (craft being one of them) while fearlessly opening new paths in design. For creating a venue that feels both proud and alive, diverse and deeply connected to what matters. @lisbondesignweek continues to be the platform where I feel the responsibility, and the joy, of bringing more of myself each year and finding new ways to communicate what I make. This was another 📍 in whatever I’m creating and a start of new possibilities and explorations. I will keep working, studying and using my language to connect. mkoi sai🙏🏼 by @marianarpda
No coração. No corpo inteiro. ____ Western knowledge was built on fragments. You are one thing or another, never multiple, never complex. This fragmentation is a colonial exercise in belonging and exclusion. In the East, knowledge doesn’t live only in the mind. It lives in the hands. The arms. The heart. The whole body…For this edition of @lisbondesignweek, I explored the formalism of textiles to create pieces that exist beyond the flat plane. Wood, paper and embroidery as sculptural and kinaesthetic matter. Giving body to tapestries, I manipulated embroidery to open episodes of questioning and to consolidate other world logics. ____ There are gestures that need no voice. In the Eastern tradition, the 🪭 was never just shade or breeze, it was alphabet. Between the said and the unsaid. An object that occupied the space where meaning breathed. Objects can be language. It is from this concept - deeply rooted in Eastern inspiration and in the origins of an identity built between two worlds - that I developed one of the pieces I will be presenting at @lisbondesignweek with the collective @so_ta_que curated by @gutorequena at @moldostudios. Opening cocktail on May 27th at 6pm. Come join us! by @marianarpda
Last year a bench add to the conversation about ways embroidery, specifically the Arraiolos embroidery, can occupy interior spaces. A piece handcrafted in collaboration with @rivalthemaker, it carried the Arraiolos embroidery into a new functional object, a signature piece, where a traditional stitch designed in a contemporary vision met without compromise. People touched, sat with it and understood it differently. This year’s Lisbon Design Week something new is taking shape. A piece about space and how a room can hold you. A piece with function that adds character, with details that are felt before they are seen. Embroidery is expanding again. It will divide and unite. Conceal and reveal. It can transform the way space is inhabited. A kind of craft, only the Portuguese embroidery know how to make. Unique. Considered and entirely itself.
📸 @arlindocamachophoto by @marianarpda
In a world where everything is instant and just a click away, true luxury feels almost paradoxical. For artist Mariana Rola Pereira, handmade techniques teach us to value time again. Born in Macau, raised between cultures, and now based in Portugal, @marianarpda weaves together movement, memory, and identity through the ancient art of Arraiolos. Through every stitch, Mariana bridges past and present, transforming tradition into contemporary expression, as highlighted in her interview for The Book of RG III. #Arraiolos #TheBookofRG #MarianaRolaPereira #PortugueseCraft #HandmadeLuxury by @marianarpda
Platanus, 2024 Mariana Rola Pereira, OdeRola ‘Arraiolos’ wool, ‘arraiolos’ stitch and weaving technique. 150 x 130 cm A tapeçaria investiga transformação, identidade e o poder do desapego.
