Hitting 1 to 1.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is standard, but timing it incorrectly can severely limit your muscle growth.
⠀
Muscle protein synthesis cycles 5 to 6 times throughout the day, creating critical windows where your body needs protein to rebuild.
⠀
Saving all your protein for massive lunches and dinners leaves huge gaps during the day where muscle recovery stalls.

Most men get a total testosterone number and stop there. Total T can look fine while free T, the fraction actually available to your tissues, sits at the bottom of the range.

That is the number tied to how you feel.

And when it is low, TRT is not automatically the answer. Sleep debt, visceral fat, alcohol, undereating, and high SHBG all suppress it. Fix the input and the number often moves on its own.

Make sure to look at free T, SHBG, LH, and estradiol, and then decide… with the help of a New York City doctor.

BURNING DOWN THE FAT 🔥

A little progress report.

Last year I stopped thinking about training as something I do to change my body and started thinking about it as something I do for myself.

Some days I feel strong. Some days I’m tired. Some days my head is everywhere. I show up anyway.

And somewhere inside all that repetition, things started changing. Not just physically.

Discipline became less about punishment and more about self-respect. Keeping a promise to myself. Again and again.

The body changing is pretty nice too. I’m not that evolved.

Burning down the fat. Building up everything else. @willvargas___ thank you for the ongoing support and inspiration by @mariano.testa

TWO YEARS 🔥
@mariano.testa

Two years ago, Mariano came to me wanting to take control of his health, transform his body, and feel confident again.

And he did.

In his first 8 weeks, he dropped over 10 lbs of fat, got significantly stronger, and completely changed the way he looked and felt.

But what I’m more proud of what happened AFTER the transformation.

Because anyone can get motivated for a month

Anyone can suffer through a crash diet for 8 weeks.

The real question is:

Can you sustain and improve 2 YEARS later?

Mariano can.

Over the last two years, there have been ups and downs. Busy seasons. Life happening. Times when he was more locked in than others.

But he never went back to square one.

Instead, we’ve continued to make incremental progress building more muscle, getting stronger, refining his nutrition, and learning how to navigate the different seasons of life without abandoning his health.

And today, at 47 years old, Mariano is in the best shape of his life.

Not because he’s perfect.

Not because he lives in the gym.

And definitely not because he’s been dieting for two straight years.

It’s because he finally stopped treating fitness like something with a finish line.

This is what I want men in their 40s to understand:

You don’t need another 30-day challenge.

You don’t need another diet you’re eventually going to quit.

You don’t need to keep losing the same 20 pounds every year.

At some point, you have to cross the line once and for all.

Build the muscle.

Lose the fat.

Learn how to eat.

Learn how to train.

Create standards that survive vacations, work, relationships, holidays and everything else life throws at you.

And build a body you don’t have to keep starting over to maintain.

Mariano didn’t just transform his body. He changed the trajectory of the next 20+ years of his life.

That’s the goal.

If you’re a man in your 40s who’s tired of starting over and you’re ready to get into elite shape and learn how to keep it for life…

DM me “2026”

Let’s make this the last time you ever have to say:

“I need to get back in shape.” 💪🏼 by @mariano.testa

I’ve always been drawn to texture.

Not just in interiors, but in life itself.

You can see texture in a person’s face and immediately recognize a life well lived. Time, joy, loss, experience, laughter, heartbreak. The beauty isn’t in perfection. It’s in what remains after living.

I think the same happens with the objects we choose to live with.

I’m drawn to pieces that tell a story and continue telling it as they evolve. Wood that softens with time. Metal that oxidizes. Linen that wrinkles. Surfaces that absorb years instead of resisting them. Their texture changes, and somehow their beauty deepens with it.

Maybe that comes from growing up in Argentina, where life happened around the table. Dinner was never just dinner. It stretched for hours. Dessert turned into wine, then coffee, then wine again. Stories becoming arguments. Arguments becoming laughter again. No sense of time, just connection.

The dinner table was the center of life.

Years ago, I found this late-1800s French folding table that had belonged to a family of antique dealers in Normandy. For years, it lived in their home as both a dining table and a worktable, carrying meals, conversations, objects, life itself.

I loved it immediately.

Not because it was perfect, but because it wasn’t.

The scratches. The worn corners. The old repairs. The iron supports added over time. You could feel every decade it survived.

When I renovated my kitchen upstate, there was a large island in the middle of the space. Beautiful, polished, practical.

I removed it to bring this table back in.

Because I didn’t want the kitchen to feel optimized.
I wanted it to feel human.

Now this table keeps doing what it has done for more than a century already:
bringing people together.

Different country. Different home. Same warmth.

Honesty has always mattered to me. In people, in spaces, in the things we choose to live with.

Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to materials that don’t pretend. Stone that stains. Wood that scratches. Metal that oxidizes. Linen that wrinkles. Surfaces that breathe, absorb life, and slowly become more beautiful with time.

I’ve never been interested in perfection. Perfection is usually just fear wearing expensive clothes.

The interiors I love most are the ones that tell the truth about themselves. Nothing hidden. Nothing overworked. Just clean lines, natural light, honest materials, and time doing what time does best: softening everything into character.

The materials I love are the ones I can trust.

When I asked @davidgzimmerman to capture the materiality of the Firehouse, we wanted the images to feel quiet and precise. Clean architectural compositions where the light, texture, and materials could speak for themselves. No noise. No performance. Just honesty.

I think he nailed it.

People obsess over living rooms. The couch. The view. The impossibly curated terrace with the olive tree that’s somehow still alive despite neglect and emotional instability. But the kitchen always wins.

It’s the real heartbeat of a home. The place where mornings begin half-awake, where conversations accidentally become confessions, where friends lean against counters pretending they’re ‘helping.’

I’ve lived with different kitchens over the years. My old Brooklyn apartment was all black and white. Graphic. Quiet. Almost like a photograph before life stepped into it. A blank canvas waiting for coffee stains, dogs on the floor, midnight espressos, somebody opening cabinets like they’re searching for answers to existence itself.

My current kitchen became something else entirely. Darker. Warmer. Built around the idea of exposing the building details, the exposed brick and the spiral staircase, like a scene from a slightly unhinged European film. The main island is an altar, where food is prepared and the chef as the maestro of the night. Industrial but alive.

And maybe that’s why kitchens matter more than any other room. They don’t just hold furniture. They hold rhythm and life itself.

No matter how Italian your couch is.

I am always so luck to work with the best, @davidgzimmerman shot the firehouse kitchen and @home.retouch did a fantastic job retouching it. @ellenmcdermottnyc shot the 2-4 images and the wonderful @bridget.sciales styled the scene. I made all the espressos of course.

Some people fall in love with people.
I fall in love with staircases.

There’s something about a spiral that undoes me completely. The way it rises like a sentence that refuses to end. The way it turns movement into choreography.

I’ve had this photograph by Tim Walker burned into my memory for years: Lily Cole in a pale blue gown standing on an ornate cast-iron staircase inside a crumbling palazzo, fabric spilling down the steps like time itself softening.

So when I discovered my firehouse had one hidden behind the kitchen walls, buried in drywall as if its beauty had become inconvenient, I knew it had to become the center of the home.

Now it stands in black steel against exposed brick, with Luna permanently stationed at the bottom like a tiny museum guard.

This is what I do.
I uncover what a space has been trying to say all along and finally let it speak.
