I am happy to share that I will speak at the conference “Permanence/Impermanece: collecting and archiving contemporary clay practices”. I will present a provocation of my work “Material Soundscapes: collecting, processing and archiving site-specific clays and their sounds”, raising questions about how site-specific raw clay, sound and interaction can be collected and preserved within museum contexts.

The three-day conference addresses how artworks in the ‘expanded field of clay’ can be made accessible to current and future audiences. These works may be ephemeral, site-specific, participatory, or live, thereby posing significant challenges for museums.

The full programme of keynote presentations, provocations, papers, and panel discussions raises a range of curatorial, museological and artistic perspectives on the subject. More infos and tickets can be found: https://cream.ac.uk/events/permanence-impermanence/

I am exited to be part of this programme and I look forward to be in a session and discussion together with @becky.rebearth and @rosanna_martin_
I hope to connect and exchange with my fellow ceramic artists, practitioners and curators in the field and listen to the keynote presentations! ✨

The conference is being held as part of the three-year AHRC-funded research project, Future Ecologies of Clay. The research is being undertaken by the Ceramics Research Centre-UK @ceramicsresearchcentre_uk, University of Westminster @uniwestminster in partnership with the V&A @vamuseum

24.06. – 26.06.2026

In October our Interim artistic director Marilen Rauch (DE/SE) @marilenrauch showed her work which she developed during her time at Keramikkünstlerhaus.

The exhibition “Unearthing Sedimented Memories” takes its starting point in the abandoned feldspar mine of Forshammar, hidden in the Swedish pine forest, which she visited several times. For over a hundred years, the site was mined. Today it remains a place that reveals the traces of heavy industrial use. For this project Marilen looked into the material history of feldspar, a rock that makes up 60% of the earth’s crust and plays a central role in glazes, clay, and porcelain bodies. Formed over millions of years, it is transformed in a short time by humans and machines into fine powder. A contrast between geological time and human intervention.

At Keramikkünstlerhaus, Marilen created a new, poetic and artificial landscape from the remnants of the feldspar from Forshammar quarry. What was taken from the earth becomes visible again. Among the sediments, ceramic objects emerge, shifting between artefact and organic form. They are reminiscent of archaeological finds from an industrial past and at the same time point to a hybrid future. The Forshammar feldspar became part of the sculptures in form of glazes. The work imitates metal objects and industrial relics reclaimed by nature. Thus the ceramic sculptures artistically reflect this transformation.

Exhibition date: 09.10.–13.10.2025

"Colour shades of Jeungdo"
Commissioned for Salt Museum 2022
35 × 47 × 33 cm
Metal chain, rope, glycerin, various clay pigments

This work I created during my stay at the artist residency Art Like Salt x LAMPLAB on the remote island of Jeungdo (증도) in South Korea. Over a period of one month, I collected various clay pigments from all over the island. The sculpture visualizes the soil investigation and the diverse color spectrum of this specific place.

"Colour shades of Jeungdo" was part of my solo exhibition „Reflections on Ephemeral Presence“ in 2022. The exhibition consisted of installations and multimedia works that emphasize the dynamic and ephemeral state of landscapes and nature on the island Jeungdo. Many elements that comprise the landscape of this island are exposed to a constant state of change, such as the tidal forces. Besides that the region of Jeollanam-do is known for sea salt production and agriculture.

Place: Salt Museum, Jeungdo, South Korea @salt_museum

Onsdag: 16.00-20.00
Torsdag & fredag: 12.00-17.00

My sculptural series “Mining Hybrids” was part of the Craft Days @craftdays_vg exhibition at @3e_vaningen from 06. – 10.05.2026.

I created the works in relation to the former feldspar mine in Forshammar, 70km north of Örebro in Sweden, which I visited several times for research and material collection. It was Sweden’s last active feldspar mines that closed in 2024. Now nature is slowly reclaiming what was once taken from it. The sculptures exist as hybrids between fossilised mining artifact and organic fossils. The podium resembles the infrastructure of the mining site, such as corrugated-metal sheds.

Stoneware glazed with Forshammar feldspar and feldspar sand from the mine.

The ceramic group show featured @davidbramham @charlottaeidenskog @helenaandersson_artist @amaliabille @keramikjohanna @oscar_gard_montan @emmaknowles_ceramics @h_sallen @zarazetterquist

Thank you 3e Våningen: @olofperssonprojects @jny_joh @georgnordmark for the opportunity and wonderful installation!

Detriti Gallery is delighted to introduce ‘Mine is Mine’, our next exhibition by the artist collective Tontouristen formed by artists Anne-Marie Dehon (BE), Jennifer Forsberg (SE), and Marilen Rauch (DE).

In Mine is mine, Tontouristen is presenting the transformative journey of clay, how it shifts physically, symbolically, and politically.

While ceramics is often romanticised as a pure craft deeply rooted in nature, the collective draws attention to another and less visible reality: the industrial mining, processing, and distribution of clay across geopolitical landscapes in Europe.

This exhibition features a body of work developed through collective research and experimentation offering a reflection on the material’s narratives, both personal and systemic.

Join us for the opening on Friday 16
17:00-20:00

This exhibition is made with support from Göteborgs Stad.

Exhibition opening “Unearthing Sedimented Memories” by @marilenrauch

On Thursday, October 9th, at 6 pm., we welcome you to the opening of the exhibition by our Interim artistic director Marilen Rauch (DE/SE). The exhibited works were created over the past weeks at Keramikkünstlerhaus.

The exhibition “Unearthing Sedimented Memories” takes its starting point in the abandoned feldspar mine of Forshammar, hidden in the Swedish pine forest, which the artist visited several times. For over a hundred years, the site was mined; today, it remains a place that reveals the traces of heavy industrial use. Her interest revolves around the material history of feldspar, a rock that makes up 60% of the Earth’s crust and plays a central role in glazes, clay, and porcelain. Formed over millions of years, it is quickly processed into fine powder by humans and machines — an impressive contrast between geological permanence, industrial transformation, and lasting interventions in nature.

At Keramikkünstlerhaus, Marilen Rauch creates a new, poetic, and artificial landscape from the remains of Forshammar feldspar. What was taken from the earth becomes visible again at this site. Ceramic objects emerge from the sediments, playing between artifact and organic form. They are recalling archaeological finds from an industrial past while also pointing to a hybrid future. Metal objects and industrial remains are slowly being reclaimed by nature, while the ceramic works artistically capture this transformation and move between the conflicting realms of industry and nature.

Opening: Thursday 9th of October 2025, 6 pm.
Opening hours: Friday, 10th to Monday 13th of October, 2 – 5 pm.

We are more than happy to share that our work “Deposit” and “Mine is mine” will be exhibited in the special exhibition HOMO CERAMICUS at Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art @g.mocca in Icheon, Korea. 🤗
Thank you, dear Jeongwoon Han @jeongwoon_han for inviting us. We are grateful for this opportunity and for exhibiting alongside wonderful colleagues and artists!

Exhibition Period: September 19, 2025 – February 22, 2026
Venue: Gallery 3, Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art
Host: Gyeonggi Province
Organizer: Korea Ceramic Foundation

Homo Ceramicus is a neologism first articulated by the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Contemporary Art (GMoCCA). In its most literal sense, the term designates humankind that works with clay. In this exhibition the concept is employed in a more deliberate and focused sense, referring to potters who transcend mere technical practice and who, through clay, articulate a distinctive attitude toward life and a unique spirit. By framing the exhibition in this way, we seek to illuminate the identity of potters from a multidimensional perspective and hope that audiences will encounter their existence with greater depth and empathy.

In the end of April our essay was published in the Ceramics Now Magazine @ceramicsnow
Issue 10 (May 2025)

“What can be found in the gap between the different clay narratives?

A contemporary and popular idea about clay and ceramics is of a romantic character. It is associated with slow movement, the field of small-scale business, handmade juxtaposed to industrial, therapeutic, and healing: a justified way to navigate in this time of heavy materialistic and commercial reality. Clay is also mistaken to be sustainable, harmless, and ‘pure’ – a material untouched by industrial processes or ecological consequences.”
