POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We visited more clay mines around the city of Boden. We learned that Boden, in the Westerwald region has been shaped by clay mining and clay processing for over 100 years. The first clay mining contract in Boden dates back to 1898. In the beginning, the clay blocks were extracted just by using a clay spade (‘Stech’) in the open-cast mining and the payment was not by weight, but per block!

More pictures from our visit to the clay factory of Goerg & Schneider in Boden, Germany. The family business was founded in 1924 in Siershahn. They are specialising in the extraction and processing of ceramic raw materials. We got a detailed and informative tour through the production site. The different types of clays are stored in many huge ‘raw material’ boxes.

We want to thank Christine Röhl for giving us a tour though the factory.

Posted @withregram • @tontouristen Our first destination in Höhr-Grenzhausen was the IKKG, the Institute for Ceramic and Glass Art. The university has one of the last historic “Kannofen” worldwide. This type of kiln has been built for 500 years in the same way till the late 1990s. The kiln is declared as world cultural heritage. The Kannofen is fired every second year in September, where ceramicists from all around the world join the traditional event. At a high temperature grainy salt is added into the kiln. It merges with the quartz in the ceramics and creates a salt glaze. Nora Arrieta, technician at the IKKG, gave us a tour in and around the Kannofen.

Detriti Gallery is delighted to introduce ‘Mine is Mine’, our next exhibition by the artist collective Tontouristen formed by artists Anne-Marie Dehon (BE), Jennifer Forsberg (SE), and Marilen Rauch (DE).

In Mine is mine, Tontouristen is presenting the transformative journey of clay, how it shifts physically, symbolically, and politically.

While ceramics is often romanticised as a pure craft deeply rooted in nature, the collective draws attention to another and less visible reality: the industrial mining, processing, and distribution of clay across geopolitical landscapes in Europe.

This exhibition features a body of work developed through collective research and experimentation offering a reflection on the material’s narratives, both personal and systemic.

Join us for the opening on Friday 16
17:00-20:00

Graphic Design: @untoi

This exhibition is made with support from Göteborgs Stad.

We are looking forward to travel back to Höhr-Grenzhausen! Tontouristen got invited as guest lecturers @ikkg_art_institute! During our three week seminar the students will explore the sources of clay in a material and performative way. Together we aim to find new ways of shared experiences to artistically express the relation between site, material, and body.

We also invited researcher and performance artist @nathalie.fari to hold a one week workshop for the students. They will use the site and area around Höhr-Grenzhausen as a basis for developing collaborative performative interventions and different forms of documentation which will be shown at the annual European ceramic market in the city.

We are exited for the upcoming weeks!

These pictures are from our visit last year when @alixb.alixb showed us around the amazing facilities of IKKG!

Exciting NEWS: we have been working intensely on our upcoming project and we are thrilled to announce that we’ve been awarded with a project grant from the Swedish Arts and Grants Committee! This summer, we will go on a research trip to Limoges and Sèvres to investigate the history of kaolin – the “white gold” that made French porcelain possible. The high quality kaolin was discovered in 1768, at that time it was also used by women doing their laundry to whiten the sheets.
From the ancient quarries of Marcognac to the legendary porcelain factories of Sèvres, we will dive into the geological, social, and political narratives hidden in this material.
Stay tuned as we trace the stories of extraction, craftsmanship, and transformation that shaped the history of porcelain production in France.

Thank you @swedish_arts_grants_committee
