A cool, windy wintery day on the Gold Coast…with some nice south swell bending into the point breaks.

Wearing boardshorts on the first day of winter😜
Crystal clear water with some fun little logging waves too.

A Black & White kind of vibe along the Gold Coast’s SuperBank early today. Some hidden gems but a LOT of water moving….sometimes backwards (see 2nd video). Plenty of punters chancing their arm, unfortunately most were skunked by the challenging conditions.

The world’s best surfers are back in town for the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro starting this Friday (1st May 2026).
After a surf at Kirra this morning I wandered around to Snapper and watched a heap of them warming up in front of their coaches and photographers.
Here are a few pics and vids taken on my iPhone. I’ll probably shoot with my Nikon gear.
tomorrow.
1. Contest infrastructure & photogs
2. Last year’s WSL world champ @yagodora with quiver
3. @yagodora waxing up
4. Former Olympic and World champ @italofierreira didn’t have any parking problems today
5. Italo wading out into a busy line up and stormy skies
6. Winner of last week’s WSL Margaret River Pro, @georgepittar from Manly is hoping to make it 2 in a row for the Australian men’s contingent.
7. Lulu in lilac. @luanasilver___ was the Women’s runner up at the Margaret River Pro. Can she go one better at Snapper?
8. World Junior Champion @danehenry from Fingal (just across the Tweed River) said he was quickly popping out for just one wave…as if!
9. Morgan Ciblic @itsjust_morgan is hopefully set to perform well on his home break. Spotted heading out with good mate @georgepittar
10. With 4 kids of his own @miguelpuposurf was like a father figure to this little grom, guiding him out through the tricky Snapper keyhole. Miguel won the opening event of the year (Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro) and is sure to put in a strong performance here, along with his younger brother Sammy.

Hello everyone, I’m back…yes it’s been a while between posts on Insta 🥴
Had a surf this morning at Greenmount in beautiful conditions with a lurid, apocalyptic sky.
Was fortunate to have professional photographer Peter Turnbull @turnthebull capture these stunning images on his Sony camera and 20mm lens in an AquaTech housing. Since I’m usually the one behind the camera i don’t have many photos of myself in the water!
Check out Peter’s feed for some awesome pics from Snapper to Kirra and beyond.

An empty secret spot hidden in plain sight along the Great Ocean Road VIC.

Finally got to surf Bells (big Bells😜) this morning for the first time.
It’s been something I’d been wanting to do for years.
There were still a few stray 8ft+ sets leftover from Sundays huge swell to keep the adrenaline pumping.
I hadn’t surfed for over 6 weeks due to our Tasmanian caravanning sojourn, so I was stoked to get two really good waves out there…before my lack of fitness triumphed 😒
As a bonus, there was the good vibe in the uncrowded lineup, and most guys were on guns or step-ups.
Local shaper Matt Shay @palehorsesurfboards was ripping on his single fin mal.
The annual Rip Curl Easter Pro starts on 18 April and most of the contest infrastructure is in place.
Here’s some random pics from the Nikon and iPhone…

Some footage from Winkipop VIC on the pump this afternoon. Only 4 surfers in the water and old mate on the second wave gets one to remember.

Big waves pouring into Bells Beach around lunchtime today. Locals calling it 8ft plus. A good start to the season with the annual Rip Curl contest starting in about 2 weeks.

Finally got to see Shippies in real life yesterday! Heres a few pics and vids.
For non-surfers reading this, Shipsterns Bluff is revered around the world as one of the most challenging big waves. Getting there involves a 2hr drive from Hobart and about another 2hr hike to the bottom of the cliff to paddle out….unless you have a jetski.
Although conditions were quite small (comparatively), I could still see the famous steps in the face of the waves as they broke.
The surrounding coastline out to Cape Raoul is also stunning and a fantastic hike.

Surfing the Edge of the World.
Spent the last few days of our epic trip at the remote village of Marrawah on the desolate west coast of Tasmania. Looking out to sea here, there is nothing for about 15,000kms until South America.
Plenty of wind, plenty of surf. The challenge is getting both to favourably coincide, which it did😜
Here’s some iPhone pics, including a fuzzy snap of me surfing, and getting windblown on this rugged coastline. Last photo is us getting stared down by the locals!
