The evening brought together pioneers from fashion, media, and beyond. Sparking conversations while reminding all of us that textiles touch our bodies as deeply as the food we eat.

Stepping into the radiant world of Kilentar☀️whose latest collection, a love letter to “slow fashion”, is entirely handwoven by skilled West African artisans using natural fibres and dyes.

Each piece tells a story of heritage, patience, and the profound connection between maker and wearer. Using techniques that stand the test of time and transcend trends.

Kilentar doesn’t just create clothing; they platform craft and cultural talent. By planning ahead and embracing the longer lead times deserving of handcraft, they honour thoughtful, intentional making.

The morning began with a golden-hour breakfast, followed by a hand-weaving workshop showing the heart, time, and devotion behind a process almost as old as humanity itself.

This event was a lesson in emotional craftsmanship, proving that the truest luxury is time and proper human touch.

This bow was from my wedding cape made by refugees/minority communities at @renaissanceprojectparis from upcycled @dior @maisonalaia material. It went to the @statedept for @secblinken’s Christmas party, a week after walking me down the aisle at @stanndc and @magdalenoxford. Its accompanying corset went to the @whitehouse with me to see @potus and @flotus Biden after our @thecaledonianclub reception.

Fashion + weddings are both wasteful industries impacting our environment in an era of alarmingly rapid climate change. The fashion industry produces around 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually, which is equivalent to one garbage truck of textiles every second. So I knew I wanted to be an intentional bride, to have social impact and pay it forward - after all, that’s what @helmettoheels and my BBC series that inspired it - Women Building Peace - is all about.

Enter @mary_fellowes whom I met at @goalshouse @cop28uaeofficial, a former @voguemagazine editor who took me on a journey into the world of sustainable fashion. I wanted a modular dress with pieces that I could not only make different looks with for our international nuptials, but to also repurpose well after the wedding. She introduced me to Philippe Guilet and his team who turned out to be the embodiment of H2H - blending fashion and diplomacy. The experience of designing my dress healed my inner child, feeding the girl who started her first business at age 9 - S & A Arts - drawing her classmates in her designs and selling them, later shutdown for soliciting on campus, burying her entrepreneurial spirit and sending her into corporate broadcasting world only to resurface a couple decades later as an entrepreneur again.

When wedding day arrived Dec 8, it was only fitting for massive foreign affairs news to break. Syria had fallen after over a decade of civil war and the country’s dictator Bashar Al Assad had fled to Russia. Realizing one of the women who worked on my dress was from Syria, I did a quick News with Suz on the way to the church to meet my British groom in the Rolls Royce that used to belong to the UK ambassador to Washington. It went viral.
