It was an honor and a privilege to think with the works of Karolina Grzywnowicz and Olga Grotova over the past year as ways to engage soil, trees, and ecologies of witnessing and memory. 🌱

Some written thoughts can now be read as part of Thresholds 54: Record.

Honored and grateful to have collaborated and conversed with Hyeree Ro in her project “Niro.” From discussions about teeth to whales to waterfalls, it has been a wonderful journey.

Join us on September, 27th at Canal Projects for the opening of this beautiful and thoughtful work and for performances October 5, November 7, and December 7 that will engage the central sculpture of the Niro and other objects in a fractured multilingual narrative.

We are excited to introduce our Lower Level artist Hyeree Ro! Ro is based between Brooklyn and Seoul and works primarily with sculptural objects and multilingual fractured narrative-based performance. Her practice is informed by her experience as a child of an immigrant growing up in California as well as her subsequent returns to Korea as a teenager and then to the US as an international student. As a constant migrant passing through various immigrant statuses and encountering disparities in class and wealth, Ro interweaves her family history, places, language, body, movement, and stories into her practice.

Her objects take on forms that resist easy categorization in terms of their origin and function, yet they evoke a sense of familiarity and engagement. For her site-specific project “Niro”, Ro reflects on her relationship with her father through a life-size, scaffold-like sculpture of a Kia Niro—the car her father drove. After years of estrangement, they embarked on a cross-country road trip in 2017, during which the Niro became a temporary extension of a home they never shared. The performance aspect of “Niro” reenacts conversations the artist had with her father, using Ro’s fragmented multilingual narrative style, echoing motifs of her sculptural works which attempt to articulate a form without ever achieving total legibility.

Performances are scheduled for October 5, November 7, and December 7, 2024. More information on RSVP’s to the performances coming soon.

Please join us Friday, September 27 from 6-8pm to celebrate the opening of “Snailing (Slippy slimy slug slut)” and “Niro.”

🐌🌀🚙🌊

Canal Projects is delighted to announce two upcoming exhibitions: “Snailing (Slippy slimy slug slut)” by Anne Duk Hee Jordan (@dukhee_ ) and “Niro” by Hyeree Ro (@hyereemro). Duk Hee’s immersive installation, centered on the famous snail Jeremy, explores “sex ecologies” and the connections between human and non-human worlds. Enclosures filled with salad-leaf pillows and carpets, live plants, robotic snails and original music encourage visitors to slow down and experience life at a snail’s pace, promoting a sense of shared existence and mutual care.

Ro’s “Niro,” is a performance-installation that delves into themes of mobility, loss, and intimacy, focusing on the artist’s relationship with her father through a life-size sculpture of a Kia Niro. This commissioned project features new sound and video work by Ro as well as a series of newly developed performances. Performances are scheduled for October 5, November 7, and December 7.

“Niro,” is curated by Maya Hayda (@mayahayda)

internodes / міжвузля installation @fabricaresearchcentre July 2024.

The web based platform launched with multidisciplinary contributions from:
@memorylabukraine
@fantasticlittlesplash
@marathonscreenings.la
@alina_tenser
@botanicalpanpolyandahoe
@iryna_zamuruieva
@north.carolinau

Check it out on internodes.cargo.site!

internodes / міжвузля situates itself amidst many worlds, acknowledging how, to borrow from Trinh T. Minh-ha “the dive up and down within self-set boundaries leads nowhere, unless self-set devices to cross them are also at work. Moving from flight to flight, more of us have come to see, not only that we live in many worlds at the same time, but also that these worlds are, in fact, all in the same place—the place each one of us is here and now.”

This project, in its initiation, convenes and cultivates collective reflection, listening, and re-envisioning of kinship in a contemporary Ukrainian context, including the diaspora. However, it intends to broaden this context, and speak with and to other communities as well.
