In July the Käte Hamburger Research Centre global dis:connect (gd:c) hosted its 2026 Summer School “Worlds in the Lab: Experimental Sites of Dis:connectivity” in Munich.

From 20–24 July, participants explored laboratories as spaces where worlds are isolated, reconfigured, visualised, modelled, tested and imagined otherwise — from space and archives to food, quantum physics, borders, landscapes, architecture and water.

The Summer School week kicked off on 20 July with the gd:c Annual Lecture by Asif Siddiqi (Fordham University), “Departure Gates: Histories of Space on Earth,” at the @historischeskolleg . The evening continued with a reception, giving participants the opportunity to meet and mingle before the programme continued the following day.

The programme truly lived up to its title: through inspiring workshops, talks, off-site sessions, exhibitions and excursions, laboratories were explored not only as scientific spaces, but as experimental infrastructures for making and unmaking worlds.

A special thank you to all Summer School participants for the inspiring presentations, conversations, experiments and ideas that made this week so special.

Thank you to our speakers and guest faculty, Matthias Röschner and Sina Brückner-Amin of the Deutsches Museum Archive for taking us behind the exhibition floor and into the archive; @katinka_versendaal for introducing us to the wonders of fermentation through “peaso” (pea miso); and the @eresstiftung for the guided tour of the exhibition “Quantum Physics and Art as Entangled Worlds.”

And a huge thank you to our three organisers and gd:c Research Coordinators, @clemensfinkelstein @susanne.quitmann and Aliena Guggenberger (@havrelaarn) for bringing the Summer School to life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in exploring what happens when the world becomes a laboratory.

Zooming in and zooming out, looking at many meanings and dis:connections, the framework of the laboratory provides! Intense, creative, and inspiring week in Munich for the @global_discnct Summer School! The great team conceptualized the format of an assay, a compressed experiment: a focused, time-boxed intervention that tests a question, method, or material through an active, participatory format. This format generated many questions and encouraged hands-on, experimental workshops. I came up with an “A4 Counter Laboratory”, a quick mapping exercise that allowed us to zoom in and look closely at the villa and its surroundings. This exercise was inspired by three curatorial strategies - contamination, mutation, and hosting - that I explored with two contemporary artists in 2024 and 2025, @julia_krolikowska and @anezka_grodzinska at the historical villa in Poznan (Wieniawskiego 3). Very happy to bring some of my curatorial practice and research to Munich! During the week, all the participants worked on the lab book, a collective notebook prepared by @clemensfinkelstein, @havrelaarn, and @susanne.quitmann, a genius idea! The lab book is a shared record in process; it invites notes, photos, ideas, as well as mistakes and corrections - such a great tool to think about communal and horizontal knowledge sharing. 💜 #summerschool #munich

We had the pleasure of presenting an excerpt of our upcoming book project *”The Anti-Manual of Care and Accountability”* through an inter-species dialogue. This encounter was a happening in which we entered into a dream that the Colombian artist Nicolas Paris had for more-than-human thinking and posthuman unlearning!

Thank you Nicolas and Jesus Fuenmayor for the invitation to dream together in this gathering of radical pedagogies.

@collectiverewilding has created this incomplete and partial anti-manual to guide the actions and relations we create as curators inquiring into the possibilities of transforming our paradigms from re-presention to re-existance.

This document is not a guide.
It is a refusal of guidance.
It is not a map.
It is the ground shifting beneath us.

It begins with questions—questions that precede method, precede mastery, precede knowledge:

What infrastructures—material, conceptual, or spiritual—must we build to sustain these plural worlds in coexistence? And what role might art, curation, and cultural institutions play in cultivating the sensibilities required to live in a world fundamentally composed of many worlds?

What methodologies emerge when we take seriously the proposition that reality is plural—not metaphorically, but ontologically? How might such a stance reshape the ways we conduct research, curate exhibitions, or build institutions capable of attending to more-than-human modes of existence?

As a permeable working document, this provocation delineates a set of principles that may allow us to situate ourselves and orient our thinking. This re-orientation is guided by materials, experiences, and teachings that come from a variety of scholars and artists, many of whom think with and alongside the earth and more-than-human entities.

Uzhgorod in June: this was such an important conference full of joy, knowledge, passion, grief and hope. Thank you all amazing academics, artists, activists and dancers for making this happen! May we have more editions of @associationruta to come!

Ruta, or rue in English, is a medicinal plant traditionally used for easing pain and supporting breathing. It grows abundantly across Europe and often appears in folk songs and stories. The Ruta Conference, initiated by @associationruta , is a space for healing—through exchange, deep listening, sharing, holding each other’s stories, and dreaming together.
Being in Ukraine is an experience shaped by tension and contradiction: in a peaceful border town protected by its proximity to the EU Schengen zone, while also holding the constant awareness of missiles falling in other regions. Gratitude and grief exist side by side. We reflect on our responsibilities. What does healing and support really mean? How can we take responsibility for the stories we receive? How can stories continue to weave and transform the world? What does decolonization look like in this region? How do we continue resisting Russian imperialism? What role does Eastern European whiteness play in dismantling white supremacy and colonial structures?
@hannaguh and I came to share our session of listening, sounding, and singing—sonic speculations on borderless feminism. We brought forest spells and stories from the borderlands of Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine. This is the work of weaving—of exchanges and encounters—with and from @vlada_musik , @witold.zalewski , @kaniahertz , Baris, @sassoukisalma , and the puszcza (forest) herself 🫀

We are so thrilled to share that two Canal Projects artist alumni Hyeree Ro (@hyereemro) and Eglė Budvytytė (@egle_budvytyte) will be showing in the Sixty-First Venice Biennale, to take place May 9–November 22, 2026! (@venice.art.biennale)

Hyeree Ro will be included in the Korea Pavilion, curated by Binna Choi who has proposed an exhibition on the themes of “fortress” and “nest” which relate closely to Hyeree’s ongoing exploration of memory and belonging in the context of diasporic identity. Ro’s exhibition “Niro” was curated by Canal Projects former Gallery Assistant Maya Hayda, and was on view from September 27, 2024–December 13, 2024.

Eglė Budvytytė, whose film “Songs from the Compost: mutating bodies, imploding stars” exhibited at Canal Projects February 3–April 29, 2023, has been chosen to represent Lithuania at the 61st Venice Biennale. The Lithuanian Pavilion will be curated by Louise O’Kelly, independent curator and founding Director of Block Universe and will feature a new multi-channel film and installation by Budvytytė.

The team at Canal Projects is proud of Ro and Budvytytė and feels honored to have been a part of their artistic journeys. We are very excited to see what happens at Venice next year!

GradFUTURES Faculty Fellows in Professional Development Innovation, Art & Archaeology (A&A) and African American Studies Professor Anna Arabindan-Kesson and Professor Sophie Gee of the English Department, brought their innovative approach to a workshop in this year’s GradFUTURES Forum titled “How We Talk about Our Work.”

Arabindan-Kesson encouraged students to frame their dissertation topics as an important part of their academic journey and area of expertise, while allowing time to “dream, create, and strategize” other positioning for their work like podcasts, panels, documentaries, reviews, or op-eds.

“Speaking with graduate students from across the humanities, it was interesting to hear how we each take on the limitations of our disciplines,” said A&A graduate student Anisa Tavangar. “This workshop invited us to understand those limitations as important tension points that help bring urgency to our work and how to communicate those to others.”

5. Mushrooms
Thank you to my father for giving me a consistent mushroom supply that made for some delicious meals in 2024, including @alisoneroman golden mushroom soup and some delish but insanely spicy mushroom larb with @amnuela

4. Tik tok Brain Rot
A lot of my cooking in 2024 came from finding a tik tok recipe in the morning, hyperfixating on it all day, then schlepping to Whole Foods to recreate it to the best of my abilities. This one hit.

3. New Orleans
New Orleans food is insanee. @obsesion_lila and I did not have a bad meal here. Special shout out to the guava green tea @bearcatnola and insanely good Mediterranean at @1000figs
