After two years of negotiations, we have officially inked a $400 million contract with the U.S. Navy to construct a transformative military housing project in Newport News — the largest one-time investment in the city’s history.

The three-way agreement is between the Department of the Navy, Newport News and developer Hunt Military Communities to finance the construction of a nearly 1-million-square-foot complex that will include 750 apartment units, 10,000 square feet of retail space, and a more than 1,000 vehicle parking garage for sailors. HomePort Hampton Roads 2 will offer housing for up to 1,500 sailors and replace the existing Huntington Hall housing and recreation sites near Warwick Boulevard in downtown Newport News.

The Navy announced the agreement today. This is five-year plan for Hunt to build or renovate more than 8,000 beds across Hampton Roads, including in Newport News, leveraging a total $1.7 billion investment from the Navy.

This is a tremendous investment in our sailors, our city, and the future of Newport News.

Thank you to our General Assembly members @pricefordel95 and @senatorlocke for carrying this budget amendments!

Today, we were proud to celebrate the opening of the first Autism FIRST clinic in Newport News — another meaningful step forward in ensuring that children and families in our community have access to the care, support, and resources they need to thrive.

Every child learns and grows in their own way. Autism FIRST brings evidence-based ABA services, experienced clinical care, family partnership, and a hybrid model that provides support both in the clinic and at home.

This new clinic will help provide consistent, compassionate support across daily routines, school, and social settings — meeting children where they are and helping them grow with confidence.

As a city, we are committed to building a Newport News where every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential and every family knows they are supported.

Today we proclaimed Give Like Dolly Day in Newport News - and will light City Hall pink tonight in honor of Dolly Parton! 💕

Dolly Parton believed in giving back and helping children dream bigger—and this year, we’re celebrating that spirit right here in our Greater Peninsula communities through Give Like Dolly Day!

We’re inviting our community to join us in giving back to children by supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of the Virginia Peninsulas and The DeGood Foundation. Your support helps make it possible for children in our community to receive a free, high-quality book every month in the mail from birth to age 5.

Right now, over 7,500 children locally receive books through the Imagination Library. by @mayorphillipjones

🚢 $180 MILLION INVESTMENT. 414 NEW JOBS. MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR NEWPORT NEWS.

S23 Holdings is expanding its Newport News operations with a $180 million investment and 414 new jobs—more than doubling the company’s initial investment in our city.

The expansion at River Port will add a new shiplift system, 48,000 square feet of production space, and expanded fabrication, machining, blasting, coating, and vessel repair capabilities.

This means Newport News will be able to compete for larger and more complex Navy and commercial maritime projects, strengthening our workforce, supporting our shipbuilding and maritime industries, and reinforcing our role in our nation’s defense. by @mayorphillipjones
