In the case of these wines, there is no need to seek glory year vintages or search for older bottles. With every year, these wines somehow become drastically more impressive, somehow improving upon perfection. Each bottle that I’m lucky enough to try, I am struck with thinking about the next release and considering where the current releases will be in ten years. How many producers can you say that about? Is it often to find yourself more excited about an upcoming release than the perfect bottle in front of you?

Olivier Collin is one of the most distracted yet singularly focused people I’ve ever met. He can be influenced by the beauty of a moment with seemingly no forward thought, while being able to maintain a firm eye on the future. Tasting and exploring the vineyards and winery with him is magical. He reminds me of visionary chefs like Ferran Adria of the legendary El Bulli; individuals who exude a childlike sense of wonder and amazement across contexts. Seeing the world through this lens is the difference between being incredible and being transcendent.
-
A favourite moment from my last visit was touring the vineyard he calls “Le Jardin d’Ulysse Collin”, which is a small plot attached to Olivier’s winery. That tour really put into perspective the terroir of Congy and the Val du Petit Morin. Walking only as far as the first row of vines, you could note that the soil was visually different from the rest of Champagne. There were large chunks of what looked to be white chalk or light clay, broken open to reveal a near-black interior. The juxtaposition of the soil itself was enough to stop you in your tracks, only then to realize that you were standing in a field of flint unique to that specific area of Champagne. The resulting wine shines in a world of its own. by @meanwhilewineinc

While exploring the legendary wine region of Burgundy, you’d be hard pressed not to notice a significant difference in how vineyard parcels are being managed with the fragmentation of ownership over the years. Standing tall above the rest, drawing your attention to some of the most prolific farming in the region, are the plots managed by Charles Lachaux, of @arnoux_lachaux

Since taking over his family’s domaine, it has been on a skyward trajectory on all fronts. The changes in both the vineyard and winery in pursuit of absolute purity have been nothing less than inspiring. Beauty happens in the margins. Flying this close to the sun in a region that has been established in its ways for generations is something I feel is not only exciting, but absolutely necessary. It’s not a chance that just anyone could take. I couldn’t be more excited to be along for the ride and to see what comes next. by @meanwhilewineinc

@champagnerogercoulon have been growing vines in Vrigny since 1806, more than 200 years spent passing their vineyards and knowledge through nine generations. Today, siblings Edgar and Louise Coulon are taking the helm, continuing the work of their parents, Éric and Isabelle, while bringing a modern perspective to farming and bottling one of Champagne’s most compelling grower estates. Their arrival has brought an even greater emphasis on organic farming, agroforestry and biodiversity. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentations, long élevage in oak, extended lees ageing and unusually low bottle pressure produce Champagnes that are distinctly vinous, textured and deeply expressive of their origins. by @meanwhilewineinc

Hidden away in the southern reaches of Champagne in the small village of Landreville, is the elusive Cedric Bouchard of Champagne Roses de Jeanne. There are few wineries in the world that somehow defy a region while simultaneously defining it. Producers like Raveneau, Selosse, DRC, and Rayas come to mind. For me, Cedric is also in this camp, floating on an island above his appellation just slightly out of reach. It’s hard to comprehend.
-
I’ve been very lucky, visiting with Cedric multiple times a year, tasting verticals, horizontals, impossible to get cuvées from impossible to get vintages. All of which made you learn so much while realizing you know absolutely nothing. Wines of emotion, living in their own world. by @meanwhilewineinc

Rodolphe of Pierre Péters has been at the forefront of the future of champagne while having his feet deeply rooted in the traditions of the past.
-
The intention doesn’t stop and start with making great champagne. Their estate vineyard is dedicated to massal selections, ensuring the highest quality vine material from the very beginning. Their wines can age effortlessly for decades into the most stunning expressions Le Mesnil has to offer.
-
Each detail is always considered at the highest level. Electing not to follow industry trends and remain true to an individual vision requires a serious level of confidence. Péters stands on their own crafting champagne which transcends generations.

Champagne to me is one of the most exciting classic wine regions in the world. Rich history considered, it is still in the process of being defined by the future. In short - I truly think the best is yet to come. Looking forward, one of Champagne’s brightest lights is a family in Flavigny making wines under the name “La Rogerie.“
-
This is a winery tending to grapes in not only Avize, but Alsace as well. Francois has grown up in Champagne and working with some of the most iconic growers. Justine comes from the legendary Alsatian family at Domaine Albert Boxler.
This power couple has carved out an incredibly special place in this world through their home, farm and winery. The hospitality they exude makes you feel like part of the family the moment they welcome you into their home. We couldn’t be more proud to work with these wines. by @meanwhilewineinc

When a new producer pops onto the scene with loads of ambition and drive, their vision is typically not fully realized because of a lack of resources, time, and raw material. It’s not every day that you have someone as smart and ambitious as Hélène being able to hit the ground sprinting with none of those factors slowing her down. She has so much focus and intention and most importantly, the ability to be self critical. A lot of exploration that she is doing is not bound to the economics of needing to release every drop of wine she makes, which, in my opinion frees you from being good and allows you the potential to be great.
-
The day that @helenecharbaut released her first wines, I was visiting Champagne. I tried a bottle in Reims out of curiosity, as I never heard of the project before, and there was a good amount of excitement around town for the first release. I usually take a bottle home and sit with it, but I was compelled to open it immediately. I was absolutely blown away. Over the coming week the labels were flooding my newsfeed from other growers and people in the trade. They were completely sold out everywhere outside of the few bottles my friend Fabrice had set aside for me.
-
We travel more than most, and thats why we are so focused in just a few regions. But this is the joy of being flexible, and present in wine regions you work in. I’m really excited that I didn’t wait to see, and was able to meet on that same trip to understand more about what she was doing. This is truly the most exciting part of doing what we do, meeting incredible people whose story you feel the need to share. by @meanwhilewineinc

If you’ve traveled to Champagne in the last decade you’ve probably spent one of your best nights out at @_victorallier_ restaurants in Reims or Épernay. Outside of the producers we worked with at the time, he was one of the first people to welcome us in, share wine, and become a pal that we look forward to seeing on each visit. Through the years we were lucky to meet @gil_conejo who is an absolute wizard in champagne in his own right.

Together they make up @champagne.cose which is one of the coolest garages you’ll find in Chouilly. Using their small production to change the conversation in Champagne from thinking “grower” means “better”, to highlight the history of Champagne, and negotiants. All while still championing the growers they work with. An incredibly unique project, making some delicious wines. by @meanwhilewineinc

This past weekend we hosted our first annual “L’été du Champagne” to celebrate not only the amazing producers we work with, but the region as a whole. Bringing together multiple agencies to showcase the best of the best from small growers to the big houses that make Champagne the amazingly diverse place it is. It means so much to us to be able to share a small portion of what has made us all collectively fall in love with this incredible region. We hope you enjoyed yourself. Because we sure did! by @meanwhilewineinc
