This October, we’re dimming the lights and bringing some classic black-and-white horror to Medalta!

Join us for Thursday Fright Nights, a three-week series of vintage scary movies shown inside one of Medicine Hat’s most unique historic spaces.

Each Thursday leading up to Halloween, we’ll be showing a different cult classic. Come for one, or make a night of it and join us for all three!

A strange little flower shop, an even stranger plant, and a young florist who gets himself into increasingly ridiculous trouble.
This low-budget horror comedy became a cult favourite thanks to its dark humour, bizarre premise, and a very early appearance by Jack Nicholson.

We’re finishing the series just before Halloween with one of the most influential horror films ever made. When the dead suddenly begin returning to life, a group of strangers takes shelter inside an isolated farmhouse and tries to survive the night.
Dark, tense and groundbreaking for its time, Night of the Living Dead helped shape the zombie movie genre as we know it today.

🧛‍♀️ Come dressed for the occasion! Costumes are absolutely encouraged, so feel free to lean into the Halloween spirit.

🍿 We’ll also have popcorn, pop, and water available for purchase during the evening.

❌ These movie nights are geared toward teens, young adults and adults, and some films contain violence, frightening imagery and themes that may not be suitable for younger viewers.

On October 24, from 10am - 2pm, we’ll bring the clay & pumpkins, all you have to do is bring the kiddos! This month @Medalta we are hosting a special Halloween-themed workshop for the whole family to play, carve, and create together.

𝗣𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀 & 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 includes an instructed clay activity followed by pumpkin carving in the Yuill family Gallery. Open to all ages with adult supervision. Sign up today to claim your pumpkin! 🎃

🧡 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

September 30th is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and their communities, and to reflect on the ongoing work of reconciliation.

There are several opportunities happening in Medicine Hat and area to gather, learn, reflect, and take part in community events. If you know of more events going on, please drop them in the comments to share with others!

We also encourage our community to take part in local learning opportunities, seek out Indigenous voices and resources, and make space for reflection both on September 30 and throughout the year.

Please note that Medalta will be closed on September 30th in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. by @medalta

Clay Explorers are back this October with 8 weeks of hands-on classes for kids and teens ages 2–15!

💛 Ages 5–7 | Tuesdays, 4:00–5:00pm
💚 Ages 8–11 | Mondays, 4:00–5:15pm
💙 Ages 12–15 | Wednesdays, 4:00–5:30pm

Each class is designed for its age group, with projects that build skills, encourage creativity and give kids plenty of room to explore their own ideas.

Medalta’s Christmas Field Trips are happening November 23 – December 11, 2026, and these popular school visits fill up quickly each year.

If you’re hoping to bring your class to Medalta this holiday season, we recommend booking now. If you wait until November to book, your preferred date and time will likely already be full!

⏰ TIME: Field trips are approximately 2 hours long, with time slots available to work with your school day.

📖 Did you know Medalta used to publish traditional household cooking & preserving recipes in their catalogue?

For example, one of our 1924 catalogues contained recipes like baked beans, brine pickles, packing eggs, sauerkraut, ham & bacon recipes, salted pork, and even pickled tongue!

💡 This was a smart move for Medalta to publish instructional material alongside their ceramics because it helped show families how to cook and pack food safely, especially for long-term safekeeping.

But most importantly, prairie families learned how to use Medalta’s stoneware like bean pots, crocks, and butter churns to their full advantage.

Modern refrigeration was not a practical item yet and so preserving the year-long harvests was extremely beneficial (even lifesaving at times) to people throughout the winter months!

Bean crocks, for example, were made to stand up to the demands of fermenting and preserving food, making them a practical choice for long-term storage. 🫘

✨ Give this recipe from Medalta a try and tag us to share the results! ✨

"𝗛𝗢𝗕𝗢 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗" 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘
1 (1/2) cups hot water poured over 3 (3/4) cups raisins
1 (1/2) cups of white sugar
1 (1/2) cups of brown sugar
4 tablespoons of butter
2 teaspoons of vanilla
1 teaspoon of [baking] soda
2 eggs
4 cups of flour

1️⃣ Mix well and bake in a 350-degree oven for one hour.
2️⃣ Lightly grease two or three 1-gallon stoneware crocks.
3️⃣ Sprinkle bottom with flour before pouring batter into them.
4️⃣ Makes two or three delicious loaves.

@StephanieArnotArt studied volcanology before pursuing ceramics, graduating from Selkirk College’s Ceramics program and earning her BFA in Ceramics from Alberta University of the Arts. Her own work explores minerals, geological processes, colour and texture, so she knows a thing or two about what happens when art and earth science collide. 👀

Over four classes, Stephanie will take the mystery out of glaze mixing as you learn about different ingredients, experiment with recipes, mix your own glazes, and see how your tests turn out after firing.
