"I’m Meagan Knecht and I began climbing in 2004 while working abroad in Germany and have been in love with the different mediums of the sport ever since. From sport to trad, bouldering to ice climbing, I am here for all of it.

I began competition belaying in 2022. At the time, my son was on the youth climbing team and I remember watching these young climbers tie in with volunteers at comps, blindly trusting they would be caught on a route. I know that when I am climbing, I am incredibly picky about who belays me, yet these kids didn’t get a choice. So, I began regularly volunteering at the regional youth comps as a belayer. Last year I was invited by Ty to join the belay team at the 2024 North American Cup Series in Salt Lake City as the “aspirant belayer”. I ended up belaying every round of that comp. Since then, I’ve belayed regularly at national elite events and will belay my first international paraclimbing event this year.

I feel there is so much trust conveyed on multiple levels when an athlete ties in with us. There is the trust of the setters, knowing they can continually set harder and more challenging routes because we will belay it. The trust of the athlete, quietly acknowledging we will keep them safe and belay them unimpeded as they push their limits on the wall. This silent exchange of trust and its responsibility is not something we take lightly.

I love being part of a community that constantly discusses, debates and evaluates different techniques and processes to become better at this unique craft. The priority is always to make competition belaying safer, evolving and growing in tandem with the growth of the sport. From the youth to the elite circuit, my goal is that every athlete should receive the same experience. I love the people on the competition belay circuit. They are some of my favorite people, and we work hard so you can climb hard. Tie in with us, we have got you." - Meagan

Reflecting back on the 2025 competition belay season, and the word that continuously comes to mind is “gratitude”.

I have so much gratitude for the belay community and the depth of talent and love we have for this unique craft. Getting to belay alongside these exceptional people at every level of competition this year has been a dream.

I am so thankful for the athletes and the trust they put in our abilities. Our commitment to their success and safety is what fuels us to continuously evolve and be better. From the youth to elite circuits, national to international, championships to belay clinics ....we belay every athlete with the same focus and skill.

The most heartfelt thank you to @trangoclimbing for supporting belay in the most beautiful way and providing my equipment this year. The care @trangoclimbing puts into crafting and designing their innovative gear is a direct result of their commitment to support and represent all sides of the sport of climbing. From the harness to the rope to their backpack and rope bag tote, everything is designed with thoughtful details and is a clear sign of a company that cares. Life unfolds like a book…filled with chapters. How beautiful that we get to write each one.

While today’s chapter ends in tears as Alina heads back to Germany, this story isn’t over yet. The next chapter is yet to be penned….und vielleicht auf Deutsch!

Home is people….not a place.

To kick off the 2026 competition climbing season, Elite National Championship and National Team Trials were essentially back to back events on opposite sides of the continent. TeamTrango Athletes @megsknecht and @_tyhardaway_ prepared for months and worked together looking at both events as one cohesive project.

"Over these first two Lead events, our goal was to elevate belay procedures to its highest level to best serve USA Climbing's most visible events. 2026 is not far away and as Ty has said, someone has to establish T.O.P. (Tier One Protocol or The Olympic Protocol) so let’s start with these events.

We sent our top belayers to serve the most elite athletes across the two highest stakes events. Trango collaborated to equip both teams with harnesses. The best of the best was represented on all fronts at this event. There was so much pride in putting on our kits, each belayer was excited over this small but meaningful element of cohesion.

This extra layer was noticed by officials, athletes, and spectators and would not have been possible without Trango's willingness to continue to support belay and the sport of climbing so completely. Really so thankful for the collaboration and partnership." - Meagan

"The depth of belay preparation for these events would probably astound some people. There are Belay Plans, evaluation and recommendation reviews, and a ton of communication. We plan everything from our belay procession rotation to airport pick-up and drop-off schedules.

We were clear with our prospectives that this would be a pressure cooker by design; the standards were to be super high, the tolerances super slim. We were going in to provide the safest, most consistent, and most professional service to our clients: the athletes. With the Trango Eclipse harnesses and Reaction draws on the wall, what we offered was the unifying heuristics that we believed could keep athletes and fans at ease because clearly, the belayers came to work.

And, yeah, T.O.P.... There is absolutely no shame in having the discipline to be better; the audacity of excellence isn't a thing. This is what we train for." - Ty
