A reminder popped up on my phone recently. One of those nostalgic Facebook “memories” that makes you feel a bit old. You see in a wave of grief, I had gone on there to look at my late mother’s profile, wanting to make sure I had saved every photo of her. While I was scrolling, this memory resurfaced. I’ve shared it before, in my stories. But I rarely talk about it out loud. Mostly because it often ends in (happy) tears— and the kind that come from wishing my mum were still here to see me live out the monumental dream I’ve had since I was a little girl. Even just a few weeks ago, a friend said to me in person, “I didn’t even know you had a National Geographic cover.” And it struck me it’s because of how little I actually speak about it. Maybe because part of me still in disbelief and the side that somehow downplays it: “It’s only Nat Geo Traveler - Germany, not the global edition.” But I know if my mum were here, she’d stop me and say, “It’s STILL a dream you achieved!!” beaming with pride. So today, I’m choosing to celebrate it and share it again. And share that for the little girl inside me who wanted this dream SO badly. This photo was taken on Lorde Howe Island in Australia in 2018 and, in 2021, became the cover of National Geographic Traveler, Germany as well as the lead image for the global Best of the World article. Yet, even now, I sit in disbelief when I think about what this actually means to me. If there’s anything I hope you take away from this, it’s that grief isn’t linear. It can show up even in the most joyful moments and be the reason tied to why you don’t celebrate something worth celebrating. And your wildest dreams? They are absolutely possible.. with heart, hard work, and dedication to your craft. It will come. ✨✨ Thank you so much Sal for being in this image. “Telling a story to a world of storytellers is a daunting task. As a photographer I have spent the majority of my career behind the lens, channeling emotion into my work. Stepping in front of the camera and sharing my inner world, some of my hardest moments, and the enduring thread through all of it, feels vulnerable in a completely new way. Part of this story is the first time I have shared it with anyone, my own family included. But to share something meaningful you have to sit with it in its truest form. To share it any other way would be an injustice to the lived experience. What remains true is this: If this story connects with even one person, if it moves someone to see the beauty in the small moments, to pick up a camera and explore their own creativity, then that is what matters. Duality exists in nature, within myself, and within us all. I’ve been thinking about this lately. As a multidisciplinary photographer, I’ve created images across a lot of different worlds, from underwater to wildlife and everything in between, and the older I get the more I realise it’s less about owning all the tech and more about knowing how you create best. That’s why over the last decade I’ve been renting gear through @lensrentals. If a vision calls for something I don’t own, I rent it. Over the years that’s often meant telephoto lenses, learning which might one day be worth calling mine. by @melissafindley
