Completing Meru's story…❤️
Meru never had a sick day in his entire life. He was always the “big” (6.6kg) cat who had somehow survived the streets solo, before arriving as a food-driven 10-week-old kitten who peed on the sofa for fun.
He had annual check-ups, the best food on rotation, and only ever needed a single canine removed for his health.

On Friday 24 July, I woke to find him cuddled under my arm. But instead of snoozing belly-up like normal, he kept shifting about. He jumped off the bed and threw up. I got up to find four more puddles of sick, which just looked like he’d eaten breakfast too quickly.

He was sick again at lunch so we rushed him to the vet who found it was his kidneys. His creatinine was around 400 (it should have been closer to 100), and we made the decision to transfer him to @sash_vets for the weekend.

On Saturday, X-rays showed he had been living for some time with just one functioning kidney. We’ll never truly know when this happened. Both kidneys were full of stones, and his creatinine had risen to 800.
On Sunday, we visited for ultrasound results. This was the closest we came to getting my Meru back — he was chatty and full of loving headbutts. Devestatingly it showed his only functioning kidney was obstructed, and his creatinine had risen to 1000.
We understood that even if he was lucky enough to be among the 1% where the obstruction passed, his kidneys were so damaged by this event that he would have no quality of life. Bypass surgery wasn’t recommended because of the stones in his kidneys and the damage already done.
I made the heartbreaking decision to bring him home for one last day of sunbaking, cuddles and love, and for one last bowl of tuna broth soup.❤️
Thank you to Dr Eva and the incredible team at SASH Alexandria for doing everything possible for him and for allowing us hours of time with him each day.
Thank you also to @restyourpawsau for helping Meru to pass peacefully at home in my lap, on his favourite spot on the sofa.
His final sunset was a stunning one, and Ossa got to say her goodbyes too.
We miss you endlessly, Meru. 🕊️🌈 taken in Australia by @meru_miaows

MERU 🕊🌈
January 2020 - 27 July 2026
How incredibly lucky I am to have loved so deeply for 6.7yrs and to have found so much joy in his chaos and antics.

A smart, inquisitive and cheeky character with a personality too big for this world... now he can be as big as the universe.

From his trills and chirps and meows to his squeaky excited purr. His fierce loving headbumps, and the paw taps on my arm for attention.
His leaps and sprints after toy mice and parading them down the hall like a prize, to our games of hide and seek. His sideways slides down the stairs and his determination to steal sweetcorn or spinach from my plate- or take a chomp at a fresh loaf of bread before it had even left the shopping bag.

Jumping into every cupboard we opened and pawing at the ones we didnt, his love of sunbathing, belly rubs and bunny kicks.
My gosh... we had so much fun.

Now I have to remember him for much longer than I ever had the privilege of knowing him.

❤️‍🩹 Was he an absolute chaos cat that somebody else might have returned to the shelter?....yes.
Would I have chosen to rescue him if I got to re-live it all over again?...always undoubtedly yes.

There was a sassy, bitey, bolshy Meru cattitude that would come out (and often be directed at my arms and ankles!) if i was sat working too late, or leaving the house when he didnt want me to, or not playing when he needed attention... he absolutely knew how to get that attention 😼

Its far too quiet without him ❤️‍🩹

Swipe ↔️ for a wave from Ossa!
These days she's busy making her opinions heard - she protests at 80% of the wet food we try to give her, she bites when we over-smother her with love, and she loves collecting toy springs on the bed for us overnight!
😇Has our angel cat just become a bit more devillish?

Mondays will always be Meru days ❤️
Behind all of the chaos and craziness there was such a soft and affectionate side to Meru, we would give anything for another cuddle ❤️‍🩹
