I am no stranger to death, but it never gets easier to process. And this one will never make sense to me.

I feel incredibly blessed that Steve was in our lives, and I know I will be a better person because of him.

In all my years by Travis’s side, I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use a basketball story to describe a future General Manager. But after meeting Steve, Travis came home like a little kid, SO excited about the possibility of him leading Fleurette. He talked about how hard Steve played, how he showed up for his team, how he never stopped working. Travis knew almost immediately, whether on a basketball court or in a restaurant, Steve’s work ethic was undeniable. He was exactly the leader we needed.

And he was.

Steve put so much care into everything. Every marketing meeting, he came prepared with notes and ideas for how we could be better. And without fail, one was always the same: we needed to do more to recognize and celebrate his team. Meeting after meeting, he never wavered on how important it was that his people were seen.

As Fleurette evolved, Steve was always one of the first to show up with a plan—and not just an idea, a multi-point plan. What could we do better? What did our guests want more of? He cared deeply about getting it right.

I knew Steve worked hard. I don’t think I understood just how hard he had worked his entire life, starting at only 15. He earned everything. He kept his head down, showed up, did the work and gave 100%.

And after we lost him, I learned just how much he loved music. I watched video after video of him singing with this angelic voice, playing piano, performing the National Anthem before basketball games.

I will never understand why someone with so much life left to live was taken so early.

But I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other, because I know that’s what Steve would do. I’ll try harder to find joy the way he did. Love harder. Hate less. Laugh more. Be sillier. Show up for people. And make sure the people around me know I see them.
