This card is dedicated to my third grade self who drew Snoopy over and over again with a disturbing, religious fervor.

Snoopy was Buddha, kind of in the way that Pooh Bear was, but Snoopy was cool. He was Joe Cool. Pooh Bear couldn’t wear sunglasses I’m sure they’d fall right off his face. Snoopy could do anything and he didn’t require an audience. He was an adventurous, self-sufficient, anarchist. Snoopy was it. In third grade, I had found my one true god, Charlie Brown’s dog, and I began my efforts of worship. I thought, if I could figure out how to draw him with integrity, maybe some of his finer qualities would appear in me (or perhaps, even better, the genius of the artist Charles Schultz, the god behind the god, might somehow possess me).

Before Snoopy, I drew mostly from my imagination. Once I got my hands on a how-to-draw-the-Peanuts book, I dove head first into a deep bought of obsessive technical drawing. I wanted to draw every era of Snoopy, every alter ego, every expression, and every angle.

Even then I could sense that drawing Snoopy successfully was a matter of proportion and confidence. If I didn’t like the way I had drawn him, I would scribble him out and try again. My sketchbook was full of thick, dog-shaped scribbles. My third grade mind found these failed renderings of Snoopy’s anatomical form deeply offensive. It was this fear of disrespect that drove me to madness.

I wrote a letter to Charles Schultz telling him I wanted to be an illustrator like him. He wrote back to me! His letter came in a shocking, lime-green envelope which has since faded.

His message was kind. He “enjoyed reading my letter” was the gist. Honestly, I think it may have demystified things for me. I was like, wow what a regular guy. Maybe I calmed down after that? I can’t really remember. All I know is, when I returned from madness, I was pretty good at drawing Snoopy 🖤.

I made a Pride card for those who need their Pride flag to be a little more folksy and strange!

Last year I sewed up this patchwork Pride flag with recycled fabrics (pls enjoy pics 2 & 3) when I was feeling my queerness and not really feeling the average plastic Pride flag.
