First of the grade.

This moment still feels surreal. When my life fell apart 4 years ago after a complete Achilles tear and calcaneal avulsion, I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to come back to climbing, or in what condition if I did. I spent every second of those years thinking about when I could return, the training I would do, and the massive goals I wanted to accomplish.

I remember clearly feeling as though time was flying by. That the years spent learning how to even walk again, to jump, or run, were further delaying my ability to progress toward the goals I have. It’s probably what’s pushed me to the point of obsession over this sport in the last year and a half since I began outdoor climbing again.

Social media does an awfully good job of presenting a facade of accomplishment, but what it doesn’t show are the thousands of hours spent working, falling, and failing in the pursuit of those accomplishments.

I wouldn’t be sitting on top of this boulder without the thousands of hours that came before this moment. This is my biggest accomplishment thus far, and a massive step toward the goals I have. Happy moments like this don’t come without the frustration, pain, and hard work that build them.

I don’t think I’d be here without the people that constantly support me, day in and day out. Special thanks to @rileynathan0 @ellymcclane and @brendan.perdue for the support through this line. And thank you to @uplift_climbing for providing a space that enables so many other climbers to work toward and pursue their ambitions.

I first saw this boulder online years ago and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I knew I wanted to try it the moment I stepped foot in Squamish. The purity of the line, the technicality of the movement, and the boulder’s overall presence all make for a beautiful, unique experience I’ll remember for a very long time.

Stoked to put down this absolutely stunning Washington classic. One of, if not the most beautiful lines I’ve had the privilege of climbing.

Thanks to an awesome crew @brendan.perdue @bensbadbeta @rileynathan0 @kaisull222 @lillian.germick

Another great boulder from such an amazing day out with @bensbadbeta and @matantuni. Somewhat lowball-y, but sports what is easily some of the best, sustained movement I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing on rock. All in such a beautiful location.

Thanks to @patrick.daley for imparting so much knowledge on Viaje’s sequence and being so fun to work with. Excited to do it when I’m back.

First fall day in Leavy. Decided to head to Schist Cave to try all of its classics and work on some power endurance. Found some sick beta, with Chris’s help, for Schist Cave’s main line that avoids over-loading an injured finger on my left hand like the classic sequence does.

Gotta hand it to this spot. It looks strange, but some of this stuff—Schist Cave and SC Left—climbs incredibly well.

It’s been years since I’ve posted a gym boulder that isn’t one of my own, but this V9 set by @ellymcclane over at @uplift_climbing is one of the coolest boulders I’ve ever had the pleasure of climbing. taken in Uplift Climbing by @milo_forbes

The feeling when every aspect of a boulder you’ve set comes together to perfectly test your capabilities is honestly unparalleled.

I set the core rose move sequence of this boulder a couple weeks back at 60° on @boardworks_climbing’s 12x12 spray Tension board. I’m hoping to finalize and publish it when I return, but in the meantime I thought I’d try my luck at setting a similar version of it on our 45° wall over at @uplift_climbing. It can often be hard to transfer movement from the board to a commercial wall (or even vice versa), but I thought this turned out amazingly well. Preceded by a cruxy, explosive heel and shoulder sequence, and followed up by a dauntingly droppable finish, I’m really happy with this bloc!

Props to @brendan.perdue for slamming the FA.

It’s only up for another week, so go get it.

Up there as one of, if not my favorite, sets I’ve ever put on our 45° wall at @uplift_climbing.

I’ve spent a long time thinking about the concepts on display here, finally deciding to experiment with them the other week and this is the result. While not perfect- the ergonomics could be improved (it’s imprecise and somewhat painful) and the critical move is unfortunately breakable- I’m overall really happy with how this turned out.

I don’t think I’ve ever been this thoroughly obsessed with working and projecting a gym boulder, and I’m excited to apply all the lessons I’ve learned from this one into the next iteration somewhere down the road. I only wish it were up longer so that I could fully piece it together and send it. Time to move on, however, and focus the week’s efforts on setting for our annual community competition, the Uplift Downgrade.
