This week’s G comes to us from @milspec_gwagon in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, and it’s a truck that clearly earns its keep.

This 1993 290GD pickup is powered by an OM602 diesel that’s been treated to a turbocharger, giving the legendary Mercedes engine a little extra punch while maintaining its reputation for reliability. It’s riding on steel wheels and 35-inch tires, with a FOX steering stabilizer helping keep everything pointed in the right direction.

Additional lighting has been added to the front, sides, and rear, making it ready for work no matter the time of day. A fresh soft top keeps the weather out, and being a New Zealand truck, it’s right-hand drive.

The most unique feature, however, might be the helicopter lifting points. In remote areas, sometimes the quickest way to move a vehicle is by air, and this G is equipped accordingly.

What we like most about this truck is that every modification serves a purpose. Nothing feels excessive. It’s a straightforward, capable working G-Wagon that’s been built to handle the demands of life in rural New Zealand.

It's been a tough few months waiting for all the parts and work to be done but it's finally back and ready for it's next COF check. New clutch kit, clutch master, clutch slave, clutch line, rear main seal, flywheel bolts, flywheel machined and new ring gear, full front axle rebuild, rear wheel cylinders, rear brake bungs, front diff lock master rebuild, rear diff lock master rebuild and a few other bits and pieces. It's been painful finding the exact parts needed and I learnt a few lessons about getting part numbers right the hard way but very happy to have it back up and running. by @milspec_gwagon

There is some serious comfort in knowing that it doesn't matter what weather rolls in while I'm out working, this thing will always be able to get me home safe. Huge thunder storm today while I was out, very muddy tracks and roads with lots of deep water to wade through. No issue for me, but a couple of cars that foolishly decided to follow me through didn't make it. by @milspec_gwagon

Volume up for a bit of 290gd turbo start up, idle and giving it some revs. This is a OM602 that was NA but has been converted to turbo using OM662 turbo and manifolds by the team at Triple peak autos by @milspec_gwagon
