Like so many in the GLAM field, I have been deeply impacted by Secretary Bunch’s leadership, charisma, and dedication to an accurate and inclusive historical narrative. As far back as 2005, when I visited NMAH for the first time and saw the sign announcing that NMAAHC was coming, I felt his influence on my career even before I knew it. I interned at NMAAHC in the summer of 2015 and got to watch him lead up close—of particular note was his empathy and support of museum staff in the aftermath of the Emanuel AME hate crime. We knew we were doing something necessary and important in the crafting of this museum. He made us feel that.

He was appointed Secretary of the Smithsonian in 2019, and I immediately put up his announcement picture in my cubicle at the GLO. In 2020, while I was living and working in a total leadership vacuum, Secretary Bunch was in constant contact with SI staff and the public, posting messages of encouragement and inspiration across his social media. I heard more from him than I did our own commissioner, and came to rely on his communication of hope and endurance through the earliest months of the pandemic.

If I am angry—and I AM angry—it is because this brilliance and talent is being pushed out by people too stupid to breathe and walk at the same time, and because unless something miraculous happens, our Smithsonian is in danger of falling into the hands of said imbeciles. But all I have for Secretary Bunch is gratitude. In him, I saw who I could be in this field. I will try to keep fighting for it.

The EMPL program was one of the highlights of my academic career, and the EMPL 9 reunion weekend is one of the highlights of my year! Always imitated, never duplicated—just ask General Troy. 😉😂

I was so incredibly proud to walk my campus again tonight. The Memorial to Enslaved Persons, reinterpretation of the Baylor and Burleson statues, and representation of the first Black Baylor graduates at Tidwell, where I spent the majority of my time as a history major, speak to the value there is in repentance and reconciliation, as well as the power of historical accuracy. I’m proud to see her grow, and I’m grateful for all those whose knowledge, dedication, and care made this possible. She’s just as beautiful as I remember. 💚💛

Most people who know me have seen my Baylor class ring (swipe if you haven’t—s/o to @sanjosejewelry for that stunner), but since I ALSO have a degree from UT now and it was such a meaningful experience, I figured I could acknowledge this too.

Whirlwind walking tour of Old San Juan—if there are historic sites in the area, I will find them. 😂

The biggest #sicem for my sister, her forthcoming MBA, and the FIFTH @bayloruniversity degree for the Nelson siblings. Please don’t ask me what her concentration is—it fell out of my head immediately.

This is the first #DIAD I’ve done in a WHILE where it wasn’t raining! I’ve enjoyed this placement so much because it allows me to get hands-on experience with @thejuniorleagueofaustin’s many incredible community partners, and @bookspringatx is no exception. Childhood literacy is one of the key indicators of later academic success—it’s such an important cause to support, and as a lifelong bookworm, it’s so close to my heart. I had a blast helping out with BookSpring Fest! taken in BookSpring by @minimuseologist
