“I had this feeling of leaving everything behind and just escaping the pain.”

For some people experiencing suicidal thoughts, going missing can feel like the only way to escape overwhelming circumstances.

Research from Missing People and Samaritans heard directly from people who had been missing while suicidal. Their experiences highlight gaps in support before going missing, while someone is away and when they return.

This World Mental Health Day, we're asking professionals to recognise the connection between missing and suicide risk, and the opportunities we have to intervene earlier and provide better support.

Because there should be no wrong door to getting support.

We promise families that we will be there for as long as it takes. But we can’t keep the search visible without the generosity of partners who are willing to share their platforms and help us reach people who may hold the vital piece of information a family is waiting for.

For the loved ones of a missing person, the pain of not knowing can be isolating and ever-growing. Weeks become months, months become years - but the hope of finding their loved one never goes away.

For more than 14 years, @jcdecaux_uk has stood alongside us and the families we support, generously providing digital advertising space across its network to help hundreds of missing people remain visible in communities across the country.

Their support means families can see their loved one’s face out in the world when, for many, years may have passed since they were last seen. It keeps their stories alive, helps ensure they are not forgotten and gives families the reassurance that the search is still happening. Because sometimes, finding someone really can come down to one person seeing their face at the right time.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing simple ways you can help us make an impact on people in crisis.

"From the start Missing People were very calm, helping us do all the practical things like making posters as well as providing emotional support with phone calls, and that's continued ever since.

I still use the helpline from time to time when I don't feel I can get through a day, and they're always there to give you strategies to help in new ways and just to listen.

As my husband says, They're the nicest people you wish you'd never met. Without their help, our journey would have been much more difficult."
