POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Everyone says they want to earn a million dollars a year, and @harveyriversofficial reckons that goal on its own will never get you out of bed on the hard days, because a number doesn’t mean anything until you know what’s sitting underneath it.

His exercise is to take whatever you think you want and ask yourself why ten or eleven times in a row, and keep going until you hit the answer that actually hits you in the chest.

When Harvey did it, a million dollars turned into financial freedom, which turned into more time, which turned into supporting his family, and when he kept digging he found the real reason, which is that his mum raised him on her own in a working-class home and worked her backside off her whole life, and he wants to pay off her mortgage so she never has to struggle through retirement.

Once that became the reason, the size of the number stopped mattering, because every day he gets a little better than he was yesterday he’s one step closer to paying off his mum’s house.

If your goals aren’t pulling you forward anymore, sit down tonight with a pen, write the goal at the top of the page and keep asking why until you find the one that’s worth getting up for.

This is something every father needs to hear 👇🏽

The damage drinking does to your ability to parent is never only about the big nights out, it’s in all the small moments you aren’t emotionally present for.

@harveyriversofficial challenges every man to walk in the door tonight, put their phone in a drawer and leave it there, because you’ll start noticing things about your kids you’ve been missing for months.

Give it a few nights and you’ll find yourself on the floor playing doctors or some ridiculous game they’ve made up, and that happens because they can finally see your head is up and you’re actually with them.

Your kids aren’t asking for a holiday or a big gesture, they just want you to be there when you’re in the room with them.

After one bad game, he was flipping chicken at Nando’s.

Today he’s the co-founder of Australia’s 5th fastest growing company.

This is @harveyriversofficial .

“I never had a problem with alcohol. I was just a weekend offender.”

That’s what @harveyriversofficial told himself for years. Then one video hit him so hard he couldn’t unsee it.

Here’s the definition that changed everything:

Addiction is anything you do that compromises your own values just to get a need met.

Not just drugs. Not just the bottle.

You say your family is your highest value, but you’re working 70-hour weeks and missing bedtime? That’s an addiction.

You say your health matters, but every weekend is a write-off? That’s an addiction.

You say you want connection with your partner, but the phone comes out the second things get uncomfortable? That’s an addiction.

Here’s why it grabs you. Every person needs certainty, variety, a sense of significance, connection, growth and contribution. When one thing gives you two or more of those fast, it hooks you.

Work makes you feel important and in control.

The sesh gives you excitement and belonging.

The scroll gives you a hit of something new (social media is built the same a slot machine).

You’re not weak. You’ve found a quick outside fix for a need you haven’t learned to meet for yourself yet.

So don’t ask “am I an addict?”

Ask “where am I trading what I value for what feels good right now?”

You’d never put diesel in a petrol car.

So why are you doing it to your body?

@harveyriversofficial and his business partner @thats.adampowell made a call most blokes in business would never make. A full year off alcohol.

No Friday knock-off beers. No client lunches that turn into a big night. No Sunday write-off.

And it changed everything.

Clearer head on Monday morning. Sharper decisions. More energy for the business, and more of themselves left over for the people at home. The fog they’d accepted as normal was gone.

The part nobody warns you about: when you stop drinking, you become the odd one out. The bloke who isn’t drinking somehow becomes the problem.

But as Harvey says, it was the best thing that ever happened to him. Because you find out fast who your real people are, and who was only there for the sesh.

This isn’t a sobriety lecture. Harvey isn’t saying he’ll never drink again. He’s saying he finally looked at it honestly.

You can buy a new car. You can’t buy a new body.

At 18, 5,000 people were singing his name.

Six months later he was cooking chicken at Nando’s.

Harvey’s dream was never Man United. It was Hereford. He grew up on the terraces at the Meadow End, telling himself that one day that crowd would sing his name.

And they did.

You think you’ve made it. Childhood dream, ticked.

Then someone decides you’ve had a bad game. You’re out of the team. Shipped out on loan. Six months later you’re playing part-time and working shifts to pay the bills.

When your whole identity is built on one thing, losing it doesn’t just end a career. It takes you with it.

Today Harvey is the co-founder of @harwellgroup , one of Australia’s fastest growing companies. He co-founded @recruitmentagentinstitute , the Recruitment Agent Institute. He’s one half of the @twoblokesonebusiness podcast. And he’s a father and a partner.

So how do you go from the Meadow End to the Nando’s grill to building one of the country’s fastest growing businesses? And what does it cost the people at home along the way?

@harveyriversofficial sits down with @benlowecoaching and @tiarnylowe on the next episode of the @modernpartnership podcast.

Asking the hard questions early isn’t intense. It’s respect.

For your time, for theirs, and for whatever you might build together.

If the answers don’t line up, better to find out in week two than year two.

And if they do line up, you’ve just laid the first slab of concrete.

The difference between a relationship that lasts and one that falls apart is whether you’re willing to have the adult conversations from day one.

A wedding won’t fix it. A baby won’t fix it.

So many couples go into marriage quietly thinking “things will change once we’re married.” Or “it’ll get better once we have a baby.”

It won’t.

A ring doesn’t fix how you communicate. A baby doesn’t heal what you’ve been avoiding. A bigger house doesn’t rebuild trust.

All of it just adds weight to whatever you’ve already built.

If the foundation is solid, that weight makes you stronger. If it isn’t, it’s a house on sand. When the storm comes, and it always comes, it falls to pieces.

Concrete is built in the boring moments. The hard conversations you have instead of avoiding. Owning your part when you’d rather defend it. Keeping your word when nobody’s checking. Choosing each other on the days it’s hard.

That’s the rebar. That’s what holds when life hits.

The question isn’t “when are we getting married?”

It’s “what are we actually building on?”

The substance is never the problem.

It is the solution.

Understanding this one thing changed @benlowecoaching’s life.

Every destructive pattern comes back to the same place: lack of self-worth.

Addiction is just a need getting met through the path of least resistance.

Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. Porn. Gambling. Work. Scrolling.

Different hit, same job. They shut off the noise. They numb the shame. They give you a few hours where you don’t have to feel like the man who keeps letting everyone down.

So you quit. White-knuckle it for 30 days, 60, maybe a year. Then life gets heavy again and you’re straight back in.

Not because you’re weak. Because you took away the solution without ever dealing with the root cause of the issue.

When you can’t feel “enough” on the inside, you go hunting for it on the outside. And nothing out there will ever fill it.

Sobriety isn’t the finish line. It’s where the real work starts.

What would it cost to replace a stay-at-home mum? We did the maths. $500,000.

Chef. Cleaner. Driver. Nurse. Teacher. Counsellor. Event planner. Night shift. Every day, no pay, no sick leave, no handover.

And most of the time, nobody even says thank you.

This is what Modern Partnership is about. Tiarny and I talking honestly about relationships, business and parenthood. No highlight reel, just what it actually takes to build a family and a life together in the modern world.

In our first episode we share who we are, where we’ve come from and why we started this podcast.

👇 Comment below: is $500K too high, too low, or about right?
