POSTS STORIES REELS

I’d already been working in education for 5 years, and I had one dream sitting quietly in the back of my mind… live and work in Japan. That dream got put on ice for what felt like forever.
I never let it go — and I finally made it happen.

Hi, I’m Mr G. I got chosen as the one teacher to represent Australia as the Hyogo Prefecture Exchange Teacher — which turned into working two jobes, one in a Japanese high school and another at the Hyogo Board of Education while trying (badly, at first) to learn the language.

That “one exchange” turned into travelling all over the country, way too many nerdy fanboy moments, an appearance on Japanese TV (I still can’t quite believe that happened), and eventually leaving my classroom in Australia behind for good.

Now this is where I share it all — the culture, the travel, the food, the mistakes, and what teaching and living in Japan is actually like, beyond the tourist version and what you have seen online.

My whole thing is to teach and help you understand more about Japan, not just visit it.

New here? Welcome 👋 Follow along, and drop a comment with your name + where you’re watching from — I read every one.

📌 Save this if you’re curious about teaching or living in Japan

🍜 ひとり (Hitori)

Just one person.

Before moving to Japan, I never thought much about eating alone.

For me, meals were about the people I shared them with—the conversations, laughter, and stories.

Then I moved to Japan and found myself eating most meals by myself.

At first, I didn’t enjoy it.

But over time, those quiet meals became something I looked forward to. They gave me time to slow down, appreciate the food, and enjoy the moment.

I realised that being alone and being lonely aren’t always the same thing.

👇 Do you enjoy eating by yourself, or do you prefer eating with others?

Saying goodbye to my Japanese high school class 🇯🇵🎓

One of the hardest parts about teaching in Japan was having to say goodbye. From daily school life to unforgettable memories with my students, this experience became something I’ll never forget ❤️

I practiced and rewrote this speech many times. I was nervous and ended up reading it, but I’m still proud and incredibly grateful. Teaching English in Japan showed me how powerful language truly is.

I taught Digital Technologies in Australia for five years, working with coding languages like Python and HTML.
But Japan gave me a new goal — to keep improving my Japanese and inspire others to do the same 🇯🇵💪

I’ll never forget this school, the students, or the colleagues I met. I wish you all the best in the future, and thank you for everything 🇯🇵❤️ by @mr_g_japan

Halloween’s over. Japan’s demons aren’t 👹

Legend says that on certain nights in old Kyoto, 100 demons marched through the streets – the Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of 100 Demons). Over 1,000 years later, they’re still at it… and now they make you dance 😂

📍 Kyoto YOKAI Festival – Uzumasa Kyoto Village (Toei Kyoto Studio Park)

📅 Only until 29 Nov 2026

👹 Parade 5:30pm · Night show 7:30pm (weekends & public holidays)

🌙 Tip: grab the cheaper Night Time ticket – the yokai come out after dark anyway

💬 Comment “YOKAI” and I’ll DM you my Klook link for tickets

Skipping Shibuya for Osaka Halloween? Here’s the reality 😬🎃

Not exactly what I expected… 👀

💀 The costumes are next level (two Brooks from One Piece!)
🚧 Shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, and police keep everyone moving. You can’t stop on Ebisubashi bridge
🕖 Peak is roughly 7–11pm. Go earlier if you actually want to see the costumes and get photos easier 📸
📍 Want cosplay without the crush? Triangle Park in Amerikamura is a short walk away

Worth it… or too much? Tell me 👇

Would you walk into this tunnel in the dark? 🎃

I almost didn’t… until I heard a flute echoing off 125-year-old bricks 🎶

This is Minatogawa Tunnel (湊川隧道) in Kobe — Japan’s FIRST river tunnel, built in 1901. It’s normally locked, but a few Saturdays a month locals open it up… and once a month there’s a FREE concert inside.

Every month it’s a different act — flamenco, jazz, harp, even ocarina. The acoustics in there are unreal.

📅 Open: 1st & 3rd Saturday · 1–3pm
🎶 Concert: 3rd Saturday · from ~1:30pm
🗓️ Next concerts: Sat 21 Nov & Sat 19 Dec 2026
💴 Free · no booking needed
🚇 ~12 min walk from Minatogawa-kōen Station
⚠️ No toilets inside — go before you arrive!

Schedules can change, so check the official site before you go.

Everyone’s running from zombies… so Super Nintendo World was SO quiet 🍄🧟

At Halloween Horror Nights, the zombies come out at 6pm and the crowds follow them. That’s your chance to hit Nintendo World while everyone else is screaming in the streets 😂

🎃 Halloween Horror Nights: on now until 8 Nov 2026

🧟 Street zombies: 6pm – park close

Kyoto’s tallest pagoda only looks like this 44 nights a year 🍁

I lived in Japan for a year, and Toji at night still stopped me in my tracks. It’s the autumn spot I tell everyone about, so I’ve saved you the wandering around. Swipe for the 6 spots I’d go straight to, plus how to get each shot on your phone 📸

📍 Toji Temple, Kyoto
📅 31 Oct – 13 Dec 2026
🕕 6:00–9:30pm (last entry 9pm)
🎟 ¥1,000 adults
🚶 15 min walk from Kyoto Station

My tip: go right at 6pm or after 8:30pm. In between, it’s shoulder to shoulder at the pond 😅

Toji or Kiyomizu-dera at night? Which would you pick? 👇 (Kiyomizu post coming soon 👀)

Save this for your Kyoto autumn trip, and send it to whoever you’re going with.

Japanese people bend over to see this view… and honestly, they’re onto something 😳🐉

This is Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Great Views (日本三景). And yes, it’s still Kyoto, about 2 hours north of the temples, on the Sea of Japan 🌊

The tradition is called matanozoki (股のぞき). You turn your back to the view, bend over and look through your legs. Upside down, the sea becomes the sky and the 3.6km pine-covered sandbar looks like a dragon flying to heaven. That’s why this viewpoint is called Hiryūkan, the “Flying Dragon View” 🐉

Ridiculous? Absolutely. Worth it? Also yes 😂

📍 Amanohashidate View Land (天橋立ビューランド), Miyazu, Kyoto
🚡 Ride the chairlift up (no safety bar 😅) or take the monorail
🎟️ ¥1,000 return lift/monorail + park entry
🎡 Secret bonus: a retro theme park at the top with a Ferris wheel and sky bikes
🌅 Pro tip: stay for sunset and ride the chairlift back down

Would you bend over for this view? Tell me below 👇

I only had a few days off in Hokkaido… and I spent 2 hours of it in this line for ramen 🍜

As a teacher in Japan, I had one mission: find the best miso ramen I possibly could. With no time to waste, I used @tabelog_japanbylocals, and one place kept coming up... Ramen Shingen in Sapporo.

It scores a 3.66 on Tabelog, and it’s one of their Top 100 ramen shops in all of Hokkaido (2024 & 2025). Turns out everyone else had the same idea 😅 14 seats, no bookings, and a line down the street.

BUT! I got the Shinshu miso, and honestly? Worth every minute of that line.

Eat Where Locals Eat 🥢

Would you queue 2 hours for ramen? Comment “RAMEN” 👇 and I’ll send you the app so you can find spots like this yourself.

※ Prices are as of October 2026. Please check the actual prices at the restaurant.

Kyoto’s most Demon Slayer temple 👹⚔️

This is Kennin-ji, Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, founded in 1202. For just 8 nights in November 2025, the garden was filled with blue mist, light and projection mapping.

In Zen gardens, the rocks represent mountains and the raked gravel represents the sea, so it felt like walking through the clouds 🎴 And look up inside the Dharma Hall: twin dragons watching over you 🐉

The catch? The night event changes every year. 2024 was a summer “sea of clouds,” 2025 was this, and 2026 is softly lit autumn gardens 🍁

🍁 2026 night viewing: 20 Nov – 6 Dec
🌙 Monk-guided evening: 8 Nov only
Comment “SLAYER” and I’ll DM you the dates, prices + how to book 👹
