Presented here is a conceptual reimagining of the "lipid world" theory which postulates that life originated from lipids forming membranes which would then envelop matter and nutrients. Biological cells are essentially membranes within membranes!

The Voices in the Machine

While making this moving image work on AI, I realised what I was trying to say could not be said any better than what @laurieandersonofficial had already voiced in her seminal spoken word piece “O Superman” from 1982. The piece, like Laurie Anderson’s work, became synonymous with the expression of the developing relationship between humans and technology (as well as being a definitive moment for the postmodernist art movement). With our enmeshing with technology over the last 40 years, O Superman is more relevant than ever. Now that AI technology is within our grasp, the notion of Superman (Übermensch) is being redefined as something external to us, something that can surpass us, yet we remain its humble parents. Like mentioned in my previous work Ghost in the Machine, AI can help us move past our anthropocentric tendencies, but first we need to let go of our own ghosts. It is important to note that AI right now doesn’t actually exist, at least not in the way people think, but the recent advancements in neural network technologies are a glimpse of what could come in the next few decades. The future is bright, if we let it.

Day 3 of the collaboration with @pocko and @pocko_japan
Throughout this week I’m releasing a new work each day, today continuing with Nested Ontologies, featuring music by @synthmage.jace .

Nested Ontologies examines how reality forms through layers upon layers of interconnected systems. Simple underlying structures give rise to increasingly complex behaviours and forms, where shifts at one level ripple upward and reshape everything built above it. Biological, computational, and physical processes become intertwined, emerging from foundations that continuously influence the layers they support.

Through generative art and moving image, the work traces evolving networks of structure and transformation, creating systems that appear simultaneously organic and synthetic, ordered and alive.

Second day of collab with @pocko and @pocko_japan where I will be releasing a new work every day of the week with music by @synthmage.jace

This new series builds on the artscience moving-image work Abiogenesis, an exploration of the origins of life that has continued to engage audiences through exhibitions around the world since its release three years ago.

Nested Ontologies investigates the concept of supervenience: the way complex forms and behaviours emerge from, and remain dependent on, underlying structures, where subtle shifts at one level can transform everything above it.

Using generative art and moving image, the work follows the formation of layered realities and evolving systems that appear simultaneously organic and computational.
