One of the best experiences of our lives! 🐻

We spent 3 unforgettable hours on a remote stretch of beach in Katmai National Park, watching multiple coastal brown bears go about their day.

Some were digging for clams on the tidal mud flats, while others were grazing on fresh sedge grass in the meadows (which surprisingly tastes like coriander… yes, we tried it! ☺️)

Then, just as we got back to the beach ready to leave… a mama bear and her two cubs appeared. The perfect way to end an incredible day.

It was surprisingly the most relaxed we’ve ever felt around bears. Despite being so close, they barely gave us a second glance, completely focused on feeding. The entire experience felt calm and peaceful.

Brown bears are the same species as inland grizzlies, but coastal brown bears grow much larger thanks to their protein-rich diet, especially salmon. Katmai is home to the highest concentration of protected brown bears in the world.

The flight from Homer to Hallo Bay in a Cessna bush plane was an experience in itself… volcanoes, glaciers and endless mountains, all set against the backdrop of the ocean.

A huge thank you to our Alaskan pilot and guide, Amelia (a local from neighbouring Kodiak Island), who made the whole day feel so relaxed and personal for our small group of five.

If seeing wild brown bears is on your bucket list, we couldn’t recommend this Alaskan experience more.

The next adventure begins... meet BAMA 🚐
Our new home we’ll be taking worldwide in 2026!
First up - the design and fitout to turn it into a functional, liveable, off road and off grid home capable of driving across the world.
Bama will be on a ship early next year to Canada where we’ll start our biggest adventure yet. We’ll be sharing it all!

Vancouver Island is wild, beautiful, unpredictable and everything we came for 🌊

Remote beach camps with new and old friends, winding through rainforests in a variety of adventure rigs, waiting out torrential rain, watching seals and otters, waterfalls, shared meals, listening to howling wolves and spotting black bears, lots of laughs, making the most of every bit of sunshine we got… and BAMA even had a cheeky little swim 🫣😆

100 DAYS behind us, filled with so many moments and memories that it’s lucky Kyle keeps a daily journal for us to look back on.

It’s hard to put into words what it’s been like travelling North America in our Aussie van, but one word comes easily: FREEDOM.

The freedom to go wherever we want, whenever we want. To explore tracks, find quiet camps and follow the good weather. To wake up in places like these with no schedule or plans. To have everything we need with us, wherever we go.

BAMA has proven to be the best investment we ever made, and sending her across the world was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Don’t wait for retirement, live your wildest dreams now.

Ever had a bear climb on your van? Well, we can now say we have! 😮

Our final morning on the Dempster Highway, we woke at 5am to the whole van rocking as something big quickly climbed up the back to the roof. We jumped out of bed, ripped off the window covers and peered outside… couldn’t see anything.

Thinking whatever it is could still be on the roof, Kyle quickly got dressed. Just as he was about to open the door, he spotted the culprit… a cheeky black bear that had decided BAMA looked like a fun jungle gym!

Safe to say, that’s one wake-up call we’ll never forget! 🐻

Day THREE | Round TWO | Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway

We made it to the Arctic Ocean! 🌊

The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway is Canada’s only public highway to the Arctic Ocean and takes you to the northernmost point you can drive to in the country 🇨🇦

The gravel road extends the Dempster Highway and only opened in 2017! Before then, Tuktoyaktuk was accessible only by air in summer or by a winter ice road when conditions allowed.

The highway winds through a landscape dotted with thousands of lakes and crosses continuous permafrost. It’s built on a thick embankment of locally sourced gravel and rock which helps insulate the frozen ground beneath ❄️

As we drove further north, the trees slowly disappeared and the deep green Arctic tundra took over. Endless grasses, tiny shrubs, mosses, wildflowers and so much bird life 🌿

Nearly 900km of gravel roads through some of Canada’s most remote wilderness to reach here - and not one but two incredible drives we’ll never forget! 🚐

Day TWO | Round TWO | Dempster Highway 🚐

❄️ Crossed the Arctic Circle (again) into Northwest Territories
😅 Made it across the Peel River on the now working ferry
⛽️ Fuelled up in Fort McPherson - Diesel $2.55/L CAD
🦊 Spotted a Red Fox
⛴️ Second ferry across the Mackenzie River
💦 Attempted a van clean in Inuvik
🚦 Drove through the northernmost traffic light in North America
🐾 Cuddles with Prince the Pomeranian
🌞 Sunshine and 23 degrees!

It was exactly two weeks ago today that our Dempster adventure came to an abrupt halt. Heavy rain and surging river waters snapped the Peel River ferry’s cables, leaving it out of service for seven days and sending us back the way we’d come.

So, we waited it out in Alaska… and came back to finish what we started ☺️

An Aussie van in the Arctic 🇦🇺❄️

The drive to the Arctic Circle had it all. Icy temperatures, rain, snow, mud and fog… the Dempster threw everything at us and we loved every kilometer!
