What are you meant to do when the systems that are meant to take care of you, do the complete opposite?

In 2018 in the UK, Black women were five times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth and 6 weeks after than their white counterparts. This was something Tinuke Awe and Clotilde Abe, the co-founders of Five X More experienced firsthand, and vowed to change.

In 2020, they wanted action. And they got it. Gaining over 187,000 signatures on their government petition, in just one week, they got Black maternal health debated in Parliament, for the first time in its history!

This wasn’t just a win for them personally; it was a win for every Black woman who has ever been ignored or neglected.

Today, after tireless advocacy, campaign building and community collaborating, Clo and Tinuke suggest we focus on three things to address the underlying systemic problems:
1.Policy
2.Practice
3.Public

It’s about standing up for each other, sharing stories, and amplifying voices.

Clo goes on to say, “Tinuke and I have a vision of a world where childbirth isn’t something Black women fear. A world where good care is the standard, not the exception.”

“This talk isn’t just about Black women and maternity; it’s about anyone navigating a system that wasn’t designed for them. [...] But change is possible. We’re proof of that.”

Congratulations Clo & Tinuke on the positive impact you are creating – we are in awe of you!

Walking into the 10-Year Anniversary of Parliamentary E-petitions yesterday felt surreal.

Who would have thought that when we @tinukeawe launched our petition 5 years ago calling for better maternal care and urgent action to address Black maternal mortality in the UK it would go viral and receive over 180,000 signatures?

So grateful for how far we’ve come @fivexmore_ 😁 by @msclotildeabe

We’re thrilled to announce our next 2026 Changemakers, Tinuke Awe and Clotilde Abe.

In 2017, Tinuke had a traumatic birth experience. The following year, when the stats came out that Black women in the UK were five times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or the six weeks after, she wasn’t surprised. She’d already been hearing the same stories from women in her community. Clo, working across NHS maternity wards, had seen the same pattern from the other side. So the two of them joined forces, and @fivexmore_ was born: a campaign that’s since taken the fight to Parliament and the NHS, working to close one of the UK’s starkest health gaps for good.

Now mothers, campaigners, and co-founders, Tinuke and Clo want one thing, to put themselves out of business.

Thank you @tinukeawe and @msclotildeabe for being true Changemakers. by @msclotildeabe

Today we held a meeting for the APPG on Black Maternal Health in Parliament. It was an open discussion where we heard directly from mothers, healthcare professionals and organisations on what their experiences have been like accessing maternity and neonatal care. What was discussed will be fed directly to the written evidence we will be submitting to the current national maternity and neonatal investigation.

It’s important that our voices are heard and that we take part in this investigation but we must always make sure we are solution led and not trauma led so with each experience shared we ask a specific question, “How could your experience been improved?”.

Thank you to our Chair @bell_ribeiroaddy and to everyone who came down to speak and support us.#fivexmore #BlackMaternalHealth taken in Houses of Parliament by @msclotildeabe
