Ell. Doing things I never spoke about or asked for pulled parts of me together like a well-tuned guitar, meant to express a song unheard.

I learned so much about who I already knew I could be, and the people around me held space—fire, earth, water, and air—creating an ecosystem for your most authentic self while testing your ego along the way. I asked for abundance and joy when I arrived, and I received exactly that. Abundance is a vibration that requires clearing out countering frequencies that cannot exist in the same space. It calls for renewed awareness, igniting Bhakti yoga in those brave enough to trust what they feel. And joy is not the absence of pain but the acceptance of it as a part of life not meant to be glorified or sought for…pain is a by product of growth and growth is to be alive and breathing. Joy is love for self.

Fully living life as an exchange student here in Rio de Janeiro, falling in love with the country one truth at a time. I have dreamt about this place since I was 15, because even then I was drawn to all things Afro, to the rhythm, the history, the spirit that feels both ancestral and alive.

And I carry so much gratitude to be here, to study abroad in a way that reminds me education has never been confined to textbooks or tests. Education is that, yes, but it is also chemistry, bloodlines, language on the tongue, and the quiet expansion of self. It is walking unfamiliar streets and somehow recognizing yourself in them. It is meeting new places and becoming old in them as different versions of who you are. It is allowing yourself to be many in one.

My heart is full everywhere I go, with every step I take to learn and understand the world around me. My free spirit is here to love all the light humans can be, and to sit with the truth of the pain we’ve caused this world, learning from both, holding both, becoming because of both.
