This superbowl build up has got me reflecting on this trip from a couple of years ago through the Bay Area, Arizona and LA. US can really go all in when it comes to sport. Incredible place to immerse yourself in the industry.

Always find travelling the perfect balance of professional and personal development as well as a refreshing reset. Where to in 2026? taken in San Francisco, California by @mtaylor_sportscience

Recently had the opportunity in the off-season to attend a @speedworks.training camp at @optimosportclinic

A brilliant chance to see the Speedworks system in action and deepen the learnings from their mentorship.

I’ve said it before, but learning off Jonas and the Speedworks mentorship has been one of the most impactful experiences of my career. The ability to bridge theory with real-world application is what sets it apart especially for anyone working in team or professional sport.

Grateful for the opportunity, the conversations, and the clarity it has brought to my own practice.

World class thank you @eatsleeptrain_ and @coachgreaves by @mtaylor_sportscience

Travel diaries part 1.

Quick recap from tours at both Old Trafford and the Man city base from earlier this year.

Simply blown away with the attention to detail of these venues. Fair contrast between history and technology yet both ultra successful and impressive in their own way.

The biggest take away was the size and scope of the Manchester city training base and academy; 16 fields, Multiple gyms, 4 story academy centre all inclusive of training facilities, education and classrooms as well as accomodation.

Whilst the football economy allows for such a lucrative program there is plenty to learn and take back to our Australian academy system back here.

We do a lot well in Aus but there is still so much room for growth!

Manchester United
- Old Trafford stadium
- trophy room
- locker room
- plunge baths

Man city

Some guys think about the Roman Empire weekly. I think about this book.

Seriously though, I reckon over the past year or three I have either had this book cross my mind or an interaction with someone weekly that references this book in some way shape or form.

I took this photo on our south East Asian tour late last year after I had noticed it at the front of every book shop we visited.

This one stood out to me for the obvious translated version but it’s link to the cafe @soo_kafe in Ho Chi Minh.

Whether you are working or playing sport professionally, studying away to earn a qualification or running a small business in a major thoroughfare your mindset is the cornerstone to your success or failure.

How you chose to think is ultimately up to you.

A wonderful read if you haven’t already.

Whilst you have read this far I am currently planning my next travel adventure and keen to hear if you have any must reads from this year.

Please share below and thanks for reading! by @mtaylor_sportscience

Another block done and dusted. (Poorly).

High stress period with work.
2x grumpy soft tissues.
Significantly increased conditioning workload.

Result?
Plateau block.

To be honest. Happy to have maintain some strength with ramping things up amidst external distractions.

Moving forward.
Need to plan better.
Will move to a 3x per week strength split to facilitate conditioning priority.

Next set of goals
45 min 10k
2:20 Olympic Ironman.
105kg bench x 3
130kg squat x 3
30kg chin x 3

Best time of year to train.

POV me on a Sunday long ride.

This would have to be one of the best riding loops in Australia.

Valley-hills-countryside-rivers-coast all in the one.

I would genuinely pay to holiday here and do this ride.

Another block ✅

Introduced APRE10 as part of a 3x4 week blocks.

These will progress to APRE6 and 4 before hopefully a few events in the afl off season.

Positives
^weights managed with ^running + bike loads
100x3 bench press
150x6 trap bar

*no formal testing outside of bench press because, ego!

RFI’s
- swimming. Not doing any despite planning it in.
- catching Covid and adding 2x weeks to the block.
- running. Covid whacked me here so the build has been slow.

Overall despite a few interruptions, in a good place to lock in for next 8-10 weeks. Aim to providing a few more insights/entries to keep myself accountable and hopefully work towards a few PBs. by @mtaylor_sportscience

Another block down.

Similar structure to last block.
Working at the higher intensity range with volume increase for key lifts.

Progress albeit minor

Squat +5kg
Chin up +7.5kg
Trap bar +10kg

More running added for conditioning and minimal effect on LB strength ✅

1x Darwin trip
2x Melbourne trips
4x gyms used.

Normally this would undo my consistency but finding ways to work around rather then miss.

Going back to the well of volume next block. Will be upping conditioning and adding in some APRE sets for strength.

See if we can keep hunting progress. by @mtaylor_sportscience

Just finished this 4 week strength block.

Been dawdling in being consistent last few months with no real objective measure.

Put this together with the intention to start moving the needle forward again.

Nothing fancy just simple, realistic and purposeful.

4 weeks
4x per week (2 x lower, 2 x upper)

+15kg squat
+ 7.5kg bench
+ 5kg chin up

Have used a constant plateau scheme with the simple challenge of (attempting to) increase weight each session.

These increases are clearly more a result of
Me loading to my capacity then an actual increase in strength. Will find out more about physiological improvements next block.

Speaking of next block I will focus on subtle progressive overload of volume on compound lifts and some adjustments to accessory movements.

Let’s see how we go.

Any questions please share.

Last week of current training block.

Current plan is as below.

3x runs p/week (1 aerobic interval, 1 steady state, 1 sprints *attempted sprints)

4x weights (2x lower 2x upper)

2-3x rides all mixed. (Main focus is time in saddle)

No swims.

See how the next week unfolds and hopefully have some improvements/learnings at the end of it.

Feels good to sprint again. Need to learn how to change my own tyre and weather has been sensational (if you can’t tell).

Happy training everyone! by @mtaylor_sportscience

Time to get back on the horse (bike)

Had a fair hiatus for SM last year.

Settling into a new job, house, state, lifestyle.

Been able to slowly but surely build back some sustainable training habits and looking forward to start ramping things up.

Whilst the coaching content has reduced (enough people doing that) I’m looking to make this a training page for what I get up to (mainly to help keep myself accountable).

Can’t guarantee consistenty but hopefully can share some interesting insights and sights at the same time. 😎 taken in Gold Coast, Queensland by @mtaylor_sportscience
