Great to get to the @sportsmithhq Strength & Power Conference last weekend in Manchester.

Always love being able to see world-class practitioners in our industry — to see exactly where that level is at and understand why.

Hearing and seeing people like this is not only educational, but also energising and motivating.

“👋🏽 Matty”

Last night the AFL Umpiring Team said farewell to a truly great coach with Matt Taylor moving his life up to the Gold Coast.

Common themes that umpires spoke about were his professionalism, attention to detail, willingness to go above and beyond for 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 improvement and more than anything else… the level of care he showed for them as a person, not just an umpire/athlete.

There are so many areas of growth and development I’ve witnessed in his 4 seasons that when I read some of the original emails and discussions we had in 2018, they are seemingly a completely different person.

What frequently caught me off guard is that he’s packed so much coaching experience across multiple sports into his life and he’s only 27years old?!

“𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭?!?”

Therein lies one of his great ‘secrets’ which I want to share for any developing coach looking to make it in this industry…

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫.

Countless times I’ve spoken with Matt about various opportunities and the possibility of better money doing X or Y and the answer has always been:

“𝘐’𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘪𝘧 𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦”.

This coming from a guy who would bulk buy discounted (expired) protein drinks from NQR in order to make ends meet.

So as Matt heads up North, whatever opportunities open up, it’ll have nothing to do with who he knows, ‘luck’, or being in the right place at the right time. It’ll be the culmination of 12years constantly making the decision to become a great coach first and foremost, a paid coach when his value is recognised by others.

Wishing @mtaylor_sportscience and @biancalrose all the best in their new life adventure on the Goldy. Thankyou for your massive contribution to our HP department over the years. 👋🏽☀️

*we still have no idea how to stand for a photo 😂

Coaches PD Session 💯
.
Last week our team @melbourneathletic were lucky enough to have @mtaylor_sportscience from athleteperformance_ed speak to us about Running for Performance, Rehab and Life.
.
Have a look at few snippets of what was discussed and spoken about throughout the session! Although our coaches haven’t been able to take sessions throughout this lockdown, we have maintained a strong focus on continuing and progressing our coaches education of Strength & Conditioning philosophies! 🏅
