We’re bringing our Sun Sprouts After School Group back to Highland Park!! Open to students from all schools, ages kinder to 6th grade. All our usual antics ~ cooking, gardening, art making, tree climbing, chicken nurturing and more :)

🎇☀️ new offering alert 🌼🎆sun sprouts after school group is now available to kids at any school, in kylie’s big beautiful backyard (highland park) where we hold our summer camp every year!

The first 8-week Fall session of HLP sun sprouts will run Wednesdays from 3-6 pm • 9/30 - 11/18. This will be a mixed age group with students from Kinder - 6th grade. We’re excited to work on more advanced craft & cooking projects, e.g adobe building (cobb oven?!), paper mache, and making marshmallows from scratch to roast over a fire together. We’ll of course be tending to the chickens too!

🐜when we rely on each other more is possible🐜

Our third week of camp we found ourselves underground, in anthills and gopher holes 🕳️ in the depths we found that we can do so much more together than we can when we’re alone

Being kid led means we leave a lot of space for the Sun Sprouts’ own curiosities and interests.. so when the gopher appeared and everyone wanted a Polaroid pic w them peeking out of their hole (way harder to time than you’d think) we knew we had to burrow deeper.

“The Street Beneath My Feet” was so great for opening up the underworlds ~ fox dens, skeletons, gems, caves.. all the way down to the core of the earth! Then we came back up into the anthill 🐜 Ants have thrived on earth for 100 million years because they rely on each other. No ant can survive alone!

PLUS a side quest into catapult engineering??? Truly learning over and over again that together we can do anything :) 🖤 taken in Highland Park by @muddyheaven

🐓🌎🐛 a few sun sprouts farm camp highlights so far

Time really flies in this collectively made muddy heaven portal.. we’re all beautifully lost in the moment documenting ants or watching a gopher peek their head above freshly dug dirt.

So far we’ve ~~~ named the flock’s new rooster (Mr. Butterboy), made ravioli in the shape of fava beans (that deserved its own post so stay tuned), made bundle dye napkins, cyanotype t shirts and madder-dyed t’s.. of course stamped w our forever refrain “RESPECT BUGS” We’ve made marigold infused ice cream, rainbow tortillas for garden tacos, sushi hand rolls, gyoza, garden veggie friend rice and so many more delicious lunches and slushees…

We’re looking forward to our next week with the sun sprouts 🐾🪨🐞 by @muddyheaven

Our time in the @elriocommunityschool garden is approaching its yearly summer break slumber, so here’s a look back at how we’ve been wrapping up the school year 🦋🕸️🍃

1st - 3rd graders made collaborative cyanotype banners for their classrooms! They used leaves, flowers, garden tools and their hands to decorate the banners as the sun captured that really precious moment in time together. We loved hearing the songs they sang as we stayed still and the sun did its work 🩵

Our Sun Sprouts after school group spent the Spring crafting clay beads of all shapes, sizes and colors for necklaces! Then we logwood dyed t shirts and decorated them with stamps. We’re all eager to proclaim RESPECT BUGS! And yes you’re allowed to be decked out in spider webs all year long, not just halloween <3 taken in El Rio Community School by @muddyheaven

Spring bouquet club week 8.. only two more! Where has this season gone! So many weather swings up and down it’s hard to locate myself in time. The flowers always guide..

Happy May Day! Working together in the garden in solidarity with all beings is our fave thing to do! We celebrated with a pesto party and used a very special ingredient ~ @elriocommunityschool garden grown green garlic 💚

Students processed basil leaves and flowers, chopped garlic, zested lemons, plucked edible flowers for garnish, and served each other this fan fave garden treat.

💚 We sang songs about pesto and savored every morsel 💚

Andddd even the leftover little bits that got put in the worm bin last week became a host for new young tiny worm life.. all beings love bread and pesto!! taken in El Rio Community School by @muddyheaven

Save the date for Sun Sprouts Farm Camp ~ Summer 2026 ✿❀✿❀✿

Week 1: June 15th - 19th
Week 2: June 22nd - 26th
Week 3: June 29th - July 3rd

At the end of our February Break mini camp we received one of the best testimonials ~ a beloved Sun Sprouts kid exclaiming at pick up time, “How many days until summer!?!?!?!” We, too, are counting down the days until more home-made ice cream, chicken cuddles and mud pools :’)

Registration for summer camp opens early March. Limited sliding scale spots available. Best for ages 5 and up.

our first ever feb camp was soo much fun 💚🩵 we: made paper from junk mail (finished product reveal coming soon), fed chickens and dyed napkins with sour grass aka oxalis, stamped our napkins with sprouted potatoes, made a big collaborative bird painting (the crow obsession continues), cuddled with sweet dog friends, climbed the big sapote tree, made a rainy day fire and s’mores and s’much more 😋🤸 cucumber avo hand rolls, pesto pasta & gyoza for lunch happily eaten before they could be photographed ;) by @muddyheaven

Flower faerie dispatch ~~ much has been happening below the surface, and now above ground too.

Starting gardens over more years than not, I don’t usually get to take advantage of our mild winters and have these incredible early bloomers like sweet peas and ranunculus. I’m so excited to have them this year, for their ethereal beauty amidst mass grief and rage and also to feel the gift of being in a place long enough to let things grow.

My experience city farming has been a repeated starting over. (It will certainly happen again, and is even happening now as I re-start a garden in a generous friend’s yard). I tell myself that there’s a lot to be learned from beginning again ~ imagining, building from scratch, going for it even if you know it’ll be temporary.

While we tear away the world that’s kept its boot on our necks, we’ll build so many more worlds, small and big, short term and long term. And all are worthwhile for the practice of world building. It’s prob my favorite part of doing muddy heaven with @kitchen.sink.la , building worlds with kids, with the garden. Over and over. There’s always a chance to try again. It kind of feels like my religion or something.

Anyway, thanks for still being interested in what we’re up to!! I hope you’ll get some flowers this year, they’re going to be so beautiful <3
