Day one at the American Royal is in the books and we were very fortunate to earn four top 20 calls which was good enough to be crowned Grand Champion of the 2019 Invitational. I’m very thankful to be a part of a team and doing something that I love. It’s still very surreal but there’s no time to soak it in. Day two and the Open is tomorrow, so it’s time to get back at it. Congratulations to @gettinbasted on RGC and to all who received calls. Thank you @cowboycharcoal and @westernbbqwood for keeping our fires lit and smoke rolling. #americanroyal

Still trying to wrap my head around the weekend. After 12 years of chasing a shot at Jack Daniel’s World Invitational, it somehow cleared every expectation I had walking in. 🤯 The staff at @jackdaniels_us and team hospitality were next level. Party on the Hill Thursday night set the tone, the distillery tour was full of history, and lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s was excactly what you hope for. Lynchburg has a way of feeling special the moment you start walking around town. Getting our barrel head signed by teams from all over the world and running into so many of the friends we’ve made on the circuit over the last dozen years was a highlight of the weekend. Then watching good friends like @bmackinbbq, @cynicalbbq, and @glampinggrillersbbq hear their names called and walk up to collect their own barrel heads was pretty special. We came in hoping to leave with a barrel head and left as Rib World Champions with a 1st place call. 🏆 Prime Pig, Prime Pecan, and Prime Sweet & Tangy did the heavy lifting. @kortemeats and @prairiefresh came through with exceptional product. I’m going to sit with this one for a minute before I start thinking about what’s next. Congratulations to @janice_smellaque on an incredible Grand Championship. Back home from my favorite weekend of the year. Seventh year in a row making both the Invitational and the Open, and it still feels like the one I look forward to most. Always good to see friends from all over the world, and the @american_royal’s new facility is something else. Best part was watching people I know hear their names and walk up to that stage. The Royal has always treated me well. This year included two perfect brisket scores, 4th in the Invitational and 7th in the Open. Those were my highest calls in any category ever, my best overall finish in the Open (39th of 360), and my first call at the Open. Grateful for all of it. No time to sit with it, though. Next weekend is the Jack Daniel’s World Invitational, something I’ve been chasing for 12 years. Time to go get a barrel head...🥃🤟🫶🏆 by @mudvillebbq

Cooked in beautiful Townsend Tennessee this weekend. Managed a 4th place @prairiefresh ribs 🐷 and 3rd place @snakeriverfarms brisket 🐂. Good enough for 8th overall. No time to celebrate. It’s a quick turn and burn for the 600 mile journey to Kansas City on Monday. It’s time for the best weekend in bbq. 👑 🤟🫶 Side note: shout out to Judith, the 83 year old Townsend native who was drinking red wine on the rocks through a straw at Waylon’s Place on Friday night. Today wws a good day. 6th overall at Smoke on the Ohio in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. 5th chicken 🐔, 21st ribs (wow 😳), 1st pork 🏆🐷 (finally), 6th brisket. Congrats to Mulky’s on RGC and @scuffletown_smokers on GC 🔥. Next up Hub City BBQ Fest in two weeks followed by the best event of the year. 👑🤟🫶 taken in Mt Vernon, Indiana by @mudvillebbq

Today was another good day. 3rd overall with a 702 (again 🤣😭 #alwaysthebridesmaidneverthebride) #raisehellpraisedale 3️⃣. 2nd @smfchicken (lost a tie breaker), no rib call 🤷🏼‍♂️, no pork call (#recoveringporkcookersannonymous), 4th @snakeriverfarms brisket. Congrats @jordankirkpatrick01 Janky Leg on GC and @scuffletown_smokers on RGC (again 😂). Yesterday was a good day. 3rd overall at Smoke N for the Kids in Troy, IL. #raisehellpraisedale 5th @smfchicken chicken, 1st @prairiefresh ribs with a Perfect Perfect 180 (don’t sleep on the Prime Pecan and Prime Sweet and Tangy combo), no pork call 😢, and 9th @snakeriverfarms brisket. Not bad after a 3 month break. BONUS: I also punched my ticket back to the 2027 World Rib Finals at the @kcbbqsociety World Invitational. 🎉 Congrats to 1Bite Stand on their first GC and @scuffletown_smokers on Reserve. I can’t believe it. After 13 years of grinding, qualifying 7 times, Mudville’s name was finally drawn for the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. We’re beyond humbled and incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete with the world’s best at the most prestigious event in all of food sport. 3-PEAT! 🔥 Great weekend for Mudville with three top ten rib calls at the KCBS World Invitational. We brought home 4th in the World Rib Finals, 9th in the Wells Cup Open, and 6th in the Invitational. Boom. Boom. Boom. The new Prime Pecan Rub had the judges hooked, and Prime Sweet & Tangy Sauce straight out the bottle added the perfect finishing touch. After taking most of the spring off, it felt good to be back cooking. Another short break coming up, then hitting it hard the last half of the year.
