Well, @authorbkborison has done it again! Grim Tidings might have even topped Good Spirits for me, and that’s saying a lot. Both are five-star reads for me!

I love the world she’s created and the characters in it. Grim Tidings was beautiful, touching, smart, sexy and funny. An absolute joy to read.

Needless to say, I’m very much looking forward to the next books in this series! 💜

Book club day! 📚🍐🍗

I always look forward to our Sheffield Reads book club group each month. A coffee, pastry and a great book discussion (alongside a variety of other topics!) is always good for the soul.

This month we read May We Feed The King by @poorsasquatch, currently longlisted for the @thebookerprizes, and we all really loved it.

I posted my review a few months ago, but it was so nice to come together and discuss our shared love of history, historical museums and stately homes, as well as the importance of curating a space within these majestic places.

I particularly loved our discussions around the ambiguous king and curator, what might have happened to them, and who was actually telling this story. It was such a great book club pick!

We were also treated to an appearance from Ziggy this morning, and we loved having him at book club!

One of the most beautiful, haunting and unforgettable novels I’ve ever read. I’m only sorry it took me so long to get to it. A true classic in every sense of the word, I will be recommending this one for years to come.

A truly remarkable WWI historical fiction with beautiful prose, unforgettable characters and devastating depictions of war. What a stunning piece of literature and an incredible debut from Winn. I cannot wait to read what she writes next.

I’ll never forget Gaunt and Ellwood. ❤️😭

Book Club morning meet! 🍵🥐📚

It was great to be back at book club this morning - thank you so much for hosting us @gaardcoffee ! The chocolate chip banana bread & strawberry shortcake matcha was perfection.

For this month’s book club, we read @c_est_qui77 ’s A Private Man (currently nominated for @waterstones Debut Fiction prize this year). We all really enjoyed it. The prose and art history descriptions of Italy were stunning and the complex relationship between these intertwined characters and timelines left us with quite a bit to discuss.

Thank you to @picadorbooks for sending me this beautiful finished copy, it was lovely to discuss it with our book club.

I am thrilled to have been chosen to be a Goldsboro Curator across July-September and to be receiving the Goldsboro Books’ FreshInk subscription box! Each month, subscribers receive a limited, signed and numbered first-edition debut novel from a debut author.

July’s pick is The Ballad of Ronan McCoy by Colin Morgan, a coming-of-age story exploring friendship, love and everything in between. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it, so I’m looking forward to reading it. August’s pick is Venus, Vanishing by @rebeccafbirrell which is a tale of art, forbidden love and passion in 1920’s Berlin. This is an anticipated read for me, and I cannot wait to dive in!

My collection of my favorite romance author is finally complete (until her new book comes out in February) ! So happy to now own all of these floppy US covers while I’ve been home visiting.

Mhairi is (in my opinion), miles above other authors in the genre. I devour everything she writes. Top tier banter, sexual tension, great characters, all the tropes, and just really really great stories. Highly recommend reading her books if you’ve not already!

My favorite (and my first) is Don’t You Forget About Me which takes place in Sheffield! Have you read any of McFarlane’s books?

Ghost Month by @simonwroe 👻

It’s always hard to review a book you genuinely loved from beginning to end, and I absolutely loved this one.

In Ghost Month, the dead return once a year for one full month. They come back to live amongst their loved ones, but they cannot speak—only observe, react, and simply exist alongside the living. They haunt the people who killed them, revisit old places they loved, and watch the lives they left behind continue without them. They also interact with one another, and immerse themselves in the physical realm they left behind.

Through a cast of wonderfully drawn characters, we meet Gideon, the wealthy boy carrying a secret; Jane, a teacher hiding the truth from her judgmental deceased mother; Eddie, whose family grapples with the annual return of his brother David; and Lil, who despite living on the street, still hopes to see her daughter visit her again. During Ghost Month, the dead force the living to confront the things that truly haunt them.

Simon Wroe has written a beautiful and, dare I say it, haunting novel about how we choose to remember those we’ve lost and what we choose to leave behind with them. The world-building is incredible, and I genuinely didn’t want this book to end.

A poignant exploration of grief, memory, and the way the past and the people we’ve loved and lost never truly leave us.
Hands down, a 5 ⭐️ read for me.

🎂 I’m another year older today!

Had a beautiful birthday weekend spent at Chatsworth House and on the Chatsworth estate with my partner! Chatsworth House and Pilsley are super special places for me, having spent many memorable visits with my family at the house and on the estate over the years, getting engaged two years ago on the south lawn and even having spent a few months working at the there during my time at university! Always in awe of how beautiful it is, how there’s always something new to see, and how much incredible history surrounds it.

Thank you @chatsworthofficial for another beautiful visit, as always.
