POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

#AD-PR - I'm rather behind on posting my book club books (this is my Sheffield book club's book from August but I've still this month's and July's to post! Not those for @frightfulfolk and @bladesandbabes.bookclub 🫣). I've been looking forward to reading A Private Man since I saw it described as Fleabag series two vibes, so I was very happy to be sent an arc of it (thank you again @picadorbooks!) I've tagged this as an AD because I received a free copy but the group voted for it from the Waterstones debut nominations independently.

✨ Review ✨
(Spoilers removed but available on Storygraph)

Beautifully written but missing depth in places. A Private Man splits between plotlines that feel unconnected on the page. We split between our main couple Margaret and David, their earlier lives, and Margaret being visited by her grandson in a care home at the end of her life.

Throughout the novel, Margaret felt human, but the male characters often lacked depth. We receive very little about David and his thoughts around leading to his decision to leave the church, for example. Equally, the grandson --- at one point and the thoughts behind this are completely ignored. In fact, this other plot line felt rather needless within the novel, though it did give one of the most heartfelt but honest and unflinching head-on look at end-of-life care that I've ever read.

I do wish we'd gotten more about Margaret and David's getting together and life after that. This said, what I really liked was that the yearning between our main characters and their inevitable romance ended with --- and ---.

A big thank you to @picadorbooks for this ARC copy of A Private Man by Stephanie Sy-Quia.

BOOK CLUB 📚
March: The Silence In between - Josie Ferguson

I'm not convinced any of us loved this, but Josie Ferguson's novel (and cracking banana bread from @gaardcoffee) definitely gave us fuel for a very spirited conversation! It was great to chat about all things authenticity, accuracy and what on earth the people writing blurbs were doing when they got to this book.

This book was a quick read, and the story was quite compelling, but doesn't hold up too well when you start to think critically about it. Sadly not one I would recommend!

Another book club one! This time with the Sheffield lasses a few weeks ago. I've been dreaming about this rhubarb and cardamom granola bowl ever since 🤤

Book review for When the Museum is Closed by Emily Yagi:

I love a weird little book, but Yagi completely lost me with this one. A woman who was hired to go to a museum and converse in Latin with a talking statue of Venus falls in love with the statue.

The ending felt rushed and a little vague. Lots of parts of this book could have been explored in more detail, whilst the things it did explore were more take it or leave it.

Overall, I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it either. ⭐⭐

HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY! 📚

No surprises, we're all big readers here at BookMachine. To mark #WorldBookDay 2026, we're sharing some of our favourite books and current reads. Plus, if you've ever wondered what a book marketer's shelves look like...keep scrolling!

So far this year, our team are loving working with clients on campaigns and projects linked to the National Year of Reading, and through our own upcoming Campus events and podcast episodes, we're joining in on the conversation.

Outside of work, we're also hoping to make the most of the National Year of Reading. From something as small as reading with our children, to bigger projects like starting a Little Free Library, running a book club, or organising book donations for local schools’ libraries, we’re plotting how we can go all in, and are looking to spotlight ways the industry can get involved.

A big shoutout to the @worldbookdaysocial team and to everyone working hard to champion the value of reading for fun (our feeds are looking AMAZING today with all of your posts!)

Some December festive glee :)

Feeling very happy and ready for Christmas and I've enjoyed this season in Sheffield. Have been meeting the loveliest people via @morgansmeetups (though I missed meetups this month as I was ill) and Sparky the cat is currently sitting next to me so life is good.

My sister visited this weekend just gone ❤️ and we had delicious food and quality time together with granny, and we took photos in @oseyouk (swipe to see) Granny says we look nothing alike and no one would ever know we're sisters 🙃 we do have different faces but I think we look like sisters!

Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🎄🎄❤️

We've chosen If We Were Villains for our book club next month. I tried to listen to the audiobook earlier this year but ended up turning it off at about 10% as it was grating on me 😅 It comes highly recommended by the lovely @magicallyemofficial though so I'm looking forward to giving it another go as an ebook!

Have you read If We Were Villains? What did you think? :)
