After nearly six years and a lot of support from supervisors (@susanalexisrandoms, @larneabsegogarty, @onyamccausland an Rodney Harrison) collaborators, friends and family, I’ve (very nearly) finished the PhD. Huge thanks to everyone who encourage, stretched, and fed into this research over the years — especially my collaborators @beakerthon and @the_keeling_curve, and to @artscatalyst and @focalpointgallery, the Othona community, technical masterminds and trouble shooters @lhtrevail, @mr.mattjarvis and @jimbrouwer. To the intertidal troublemakers and fellow travellers @warren__harper, @jamesravinet, @angenita_teekens, @harwood_yoha and Malcolm Hardy, and all those who shared stories, shelter, skills, food, damp feet, patience, tools, peer-reviews and time. Particular thanks to those who opened archives, boats, back rooms, and strange side doors when they really didn’t have to. And to those no longer here, but still everywhere in the work. There are many more people than I can mention here. Part-exam-part-celebration, I will first be sharing some work publicly across two spaces in London. As an element of my viva there will be work shown at the Slade Research Centre, near Woburn Square. Despite prominent descriptions of Svalbard as exceptional and remote, my interest lies in exploring the history of the region as subject to processes of territorialisation and extraction. This has largely developed through practical experiments and collaborations exploring radio technologies and atmospheric archaeology.I have observed this in the ruins of communication infrastructures, once used to assert sovereignty and control. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of this Arctic archipelago has carried, through the radio spectrum, satellite transmissions, earth monitoring, weather data, military signals and static. In an attempt to comprehend the tangible and spectral artifacts of ‘radio’ between the UK and Svalbard, I have been making radio listening devices and radio image transmitters as tools for fieldwork. These include a DIY radio receiver modelled on a crystal radio. Here, a copper coil is wrapped around a plant fossil from the Longyear glacier moraine, while a Galena crystal from Bjørnøya island located in the south of Svalbard regulates the radio signal. Connecting the radio receiver’s aerial to the remains of defunct radio masts and radio heritage sites reactivates them and turns them into an antenna.I have also collaborated with @mr.mattjarvis, an artist and creative computing specialist. Together we have made two paired radio devices that transmit and receive images, and a radio play script using slow scan TV. These devices are located at and transmitting from Artica in Longyearbyen. I will now continue to develop the radio play with academics at Warwick. WATER - An urgent callForever in admiration and love for Palest!ni4n people in their steadfast struggle for justice, and the international solidarity that closes ports and destroys weapons before they can be used. The obliteration of salination facilities and vital infrastructure is a weapon that continues to kill thousands with little to no access to fresh water sources. There are people working to get clean water distributed by any means they can.I read Ariana had made a donation through @brandon_shimoda, who had managed to fund a truck of clean water that successfully made it into Gaza. It only costs $400/ £350 for a whole truck. You can contact him to make a contribution towards the truck, anything will help. You can remain anonymous; I chose not to in order to encourage friends to support, and that families might redirect money this holiday season to those who are fighting to live. I am in the last few months of a PhD stipend, and this has made it possible for me to support. Some have more, some less. Water is urgent always.
