BUILT & QUILT featuring myself and Kristy Woudstra @gezelligstudiocanada at @the.assemblygallery will be open from 5-7 this evening and 12-5 on Saturday.

Abstract wood and beeswax sculptures by Bischoff both contrast and support/compliment textile work by Woudstra. Work by both artists are the resulting download of the artists’ shared Dutch ancestry and the materials that their family members worked with as seen through a contemporary artist’s lens.

We are excited to present our work together, works that are extensions of our life experiences as the children of Dutch immigrants and the materials through which we share our voices.

BUILT & QUILT- featuring myself and guest artist Kristy Woudstra @gezelligstudiocanada at @the.assemblygallery August 7-29. Opening Friday, August 7, 7-10 pm.

For myself a further exploration of sculptural forms with an interest towards materiality, composition and sustainability as seen through the lens of abstraction.
For Kristy working through the medium of quilting with a keen eye for design and colour while addressing lived experience.

Where our work overlaps is that the mediums through which each of us works are familial and genetic extensions of ourselves as the daughters of Dutch immigrants. The works engage with one another and enter into a dialogue that revolves around a rich history with its roots in Dutch migration and the skills sets that came along with those immigrants; ones which exemplify honesty of material form alongside pragmatism.

DVSA is open for in person previews this week and bidding online is now open.

A bit about the piece- Although working two dimensionally, I am always simultaneously intrigued with conveying abstract sculptural form. I’m a minimalist at heart and I like breaking things down into their most essential parts; hence the black and white and graphic nature of the work. Difficult to see unless in person is the underlying texture of the wood that comes through and the yummy effect of painting white on white. taken in Dundas Valley School of Art by @natasja.bischoff
